BALFOUR. On 2nd April, at Mansefield, Totara Valley, James Balfour, aged 56
years. Deeply regretted. [See 05/03/1897, page 2, for report published.]
North Otago Times, 6 April 1897, Page 1 OBITUARY. (Timaru Herald).
We announce with regret the death, at the comparatively early age of 56, of Mr James Balfour, of Mansefield, Totara, near Pleasant Point, which took place at his late residence at midnight on Friday. Mr Balfour became seriously ill about eight weeks ago, and was attended by Dr Thomas, of Pleasant Point. Two weeks ago an operation was deemed necessary, and Dr Bowe and Dr Hayes were called in to assist Dr Thomas. It was found that an internal growth existed, which was impossible of removal, and this was the cause of death. The late Mr James Balfour came from Stirlingshire, Scotland to this colony about 1862, and acted for some time as a carrier to the Goldfields. He afterwards went in for farming at Totara in the Oamaru district, and met with a good measure of success. About twenty years ago he took up land at Totara, near Pleasant Point, and proved one of the most enterprising and successful settlers in the district. He leaves a large estate, which he had gained by persevering toil, and died just when he was beginning to think of enjoying the fruits of his labors. He was one of the most popular men in the district, and was noted for his cheerfulness and good humor. He did not undertake any work of a public nature, but was liberal supporter of the Presbyterian church materially assisting, financially, when the pretty church was erected in Totara Valley. His death has caused another blank in the district, and great sorrow is felt by all who knew him, whilst much sympathy is expressed with the bereaved family. He leaves a widow, three sons and six daughters (the youngest being about six months old), and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.

The last respects were paid on Monday last to the remains of the oldest resident
of the Mackenzie Country, J.W.A. COULSON, who died at Rona, Burke's Pass, on the
18th inst., aged 75. The deceased arrived in the colony in the Minerva
in 1852, with Sir John Hall, and came to the Mackenzie Country in the end of the
"fifties" as shepherd to Mr Stericker, who then owned Sawdon Station, and for a
short time he was employed in the same capacity at Irishman's Creek Station with
Mr Paterson. He was a cabinet-maker by trade, and afterwards took to
carpentering, which occupation he followed off and on ever since. For some time
past he had been unable to make living at his trade, and about five years ago Mr
McMillan took him under the shelter of his hospitable wing, and treated him as
one of the family ever since. Coulson was rather eccentric in his ways, and
would not hear of leaving the Mackenzie, having only been twice or thrice in
Timaru during all the time he was in South Canterbury. He was buried in a
respectable manner by a few of his friends at the Pass.
