Mr Thomas Mossman, aged 100 years died. Napier.
The old gentleman was born on the first day of 1800. He was born on Lord
Powiscourt's estate near Dungannan, in Ireland. The Duke of Portland swore Mr
Mossman in as chief of his special constables. This was during the period of the
notorious riots and Nottingham Castle was fired and destroyed. At the end of
this period he inherited the family home and returned to Ireland. Fifty-two
years ago he married Miss Eleanor Dilworth, who was born near Dungannan [?Donaghmore,
County Tyrone, Ireland], on Lord Ranfurly's estate. After a few years' residence
at the old home, he tired of gentlemanly inactivity and sold out and went to
Canada and the States. He remained in America about 13 years, and then came to
Auckland at the request of his brother-in-law, the late James
Dilworth of Auckland. He came to New Zealand when he was 70 years of age,
and was then a hale and hearty old man. He took to active farming in the
Waikato, and about 20 years since retired into private life, living near Napier.
His memory was particular vivid, and many were the yarns of olden times with
which he would interest and amuse his hearers. The deceased did not attribute
his advanced age to any special system, but to habitual care to avoid all kinds
of excess and to simple living. His medical attendant pronounced him sound and
free from disease. [MOSSMAN, Trooper, JAMES DILWORTH, 13/1875. Auckland Mounted
Rifles, N.Z.E.F. K.I.A. 19th May 1915. Age 21. Son of W. J. and Marion

Monday 31 July 1899
The news of the death of Mr Andrew Sherratt on Saturday caused widespread regret
among old residents in Timaru, and noted another vacancy in the ranks of the old
identities. The late Mr Sherratt came to the colony in 1863 in the ship captain
cook, whilst engaged in contracting at Lyttelton, paid a visit to Timaru and
liked the district so much that in 1867 he decided to leave Lyttelton and join
Mr George butler, who he had known inn the Old Country, in business in Timaru.
fret being together for some years Mr Butler took up farming and Mr Sherratt
went into the coal trade. Mr Sherratt took a lively interest in the affairs of
his adopted town, had been Mayor of Timaru, and a member of the Timaru Borough
Council, of the High School Board, Hospital Board, etc. He enjoyed excellent
health up to a year or so ago, when a very severe attack of influenza followed
by serious complications undermined his health completely, and after a lingering
illness he passed quietly away at an early hour on Saturday. Regret at his death
is the more poignant, in that Mrs Sherratt lies almost at the point of death
[d. Dec.]. The deceased gentleman was widely known and respected and in
his quiet way always did his best to help forward the interests of Timaru. The
funeral takes place this afternoon.

A serious accident happened at Temuka on Wednesday night to a well known and
highly respected farmer named George McMillan, if the Stumps farm, Orari, and
Rhoboro Downs Station. Mr McMillan and his partner in the station, Mr McArthur,
left Story's Stables in a gig for home about 8.20, it being very dark, but they
had lights on the gig. They drove down the main road towards Milford, starting
at a good pace. Presently both men were found lying on the road at the railway
crossing, McMillan on the line. The former bleeding profusely from the left leg.
A number of people were soon at the spot, Dr Warren among them. Mr McMillan was
removed to Dr Hayes' private hospital, and Mr McArthur to Donohue's Hotel. Mr
McMillan's leg was so badly mangled that Drs. Reid (Dr Hayes; locum tenems),
Blunden and Warren decided that immediate amputation was necessary and the leg
was taken off above the knee. Death took place at 1 o'clock yesterday. Mr Wray,
the Coroner, will hold an inquest at Temuka this morning. A special train with

The funeral of the late Hinman Jackson took place on Tuesday, leaving his late
residence, Lower Pareora. The deep respect in which the deceased gentleman was
held was shown by the surrounding districts who attended the funeral. The late
Mr Hinman Jackson arrived in Lyttelton in 1869, in the ship Lancashire
Witch, and came down at once to South Canterbury, taking up a farm at
Pleasant Point. He remained thee for 18 years, and then went to Hunters (near
Makikihi), where he farmed for eleven years. After this he lived in Timaru for a
few more months, but being averse to private life decided to once more go
farming. This time he took up Summerleaze, Lower Pareora. A few months ago his
health began to fail, and after a brief illness he passed away on Sunday last.
He leaves a widow and grown up family, all of whom have sincere sympathy of a
wide circle of friends.

The police received word late last night, that a wagoner named John Hicks had
been drowned in the Lower Pareora river near St. Andrews. The horses had got to
the bank, but the wagon was in the river. The Pareora was high on Sunday and
Monday night's heavy rain must have swollen it still more.
Thursday 7 December 1899
Constable Crawford went down early to check the rumour. Mr Hicks got stuck in
the river with a load of wool, and went off to Mr Brookland's to get horses to
help him out. During his absence some settlers came along and finding no one
with the waggon and team they concluded that the driver had been drowned, and
searched the riverbed for his body, and sent word to St. Andrews. Mr Hicks got
the assistance he sought and proceeded on his way to town, and Constable
Crawford had the satisfaction of meeting him returning to Hook after delivering
his load.
