Obituary - Timaru - Mrs Ingram SHRIMPTON
News reached town this morning that Mrs Ingram Shrimpton had died at her residence, Church St, Timaru at the advanced age of 89 years. The venerable lady was one of the pilgrims of Canterbury, having arrived here with her husband and family shortly after the advent of the historical first four ships. Mr Shrimpton sent out all the necessary plant and requirements wherewith to establish a newspaper in the newly settled Canterbury province, and only remained at Home meanwhile to to close up a bookseller's and stationer's business in Oxford. The first publication of the Lyttelton Times was therefore made by his sons and Mr George Tayler, now in business in Christchurch, but when Mr Ingram Shrimpton arrived, the province had so far progressed that he at once set about to remove the office of the paper to its present position in Christchurch. its history since then has frequently been written, and therefore needs no repetition. Of the deceased lady little has been known of late years save by her numerous family connections and neighbours. But it is admitted on all sides that she has proved herself a most exemplary parent, a God-faring woman who has gained the highest respect from all with whom she has ever come into contact. She leaves an exceptionally large number of descendants, all the members of her own family having married and settled in the Colony. Her husband died in Timaru in 1889, since when she has lived a quiet and peaceful life with her eldest daughter, the widow of the late Mr James KING. Her funeral is to take place in Timaru on Monday.Oxford Chronicle July 15 1899
She had led a remarkably active life. Of her twelve children eight are still living, and there are 52 grandchildren, besides great grand children, so Oxford is well-represented in the distant colony.Dec. 20 1856 Mr John Ingram Shrimpton, died aged 23, published the first number of the 'Lyttelton Times', in the open air. He was the eldest son of Ingram Shrimpton, formerly an eminent printer at Oxford. He was out duck shooting with his brother Walter near the river Ashley. Walter slipped and the gun went off, and the contents lodged in his brother's heart. Walter immediately hurried to Miller's house of accomodation, at the Salt-water Creek, and asked for help. Inquest held before W. Donald, esq. Verdict of "Accidental Death" returned.
Joseph Tayler and John Tayler b. about 1824 to 1845 - father Henry Tayler - mother Matilda Tayler (nee Shrimpton) brother of Ingram Shrimpton - resident in Oxford, UK, in 1850s.
Sarah Ann KING married Walter SHRIMPTON in 1857. Walter was son of Ingram SHRIMPTON. Sarah was sister to Hannah KING who married John Scott CAVERHILL.
Matilda Shrimpton was one of 7 known children and was probably the second eldest. Her son George with his cousin John Ingram Shrimpton arrived on 16th December 1850 in New Zealand on the 'Charlotte Jane'. Another cousin Philip Davis, the son of Matilda's only sister arrived in New Zealand in 1867. Two of Matilda's brothers also emigrated to New Zealand, John and Ingram in 1853 on the ship 'John Taylor'.
John and Rebecca Shrimpton son Ingram had a son Walter b.1837 d. 1862 NZ b. Abington Oxford married Sarah Ann King 1856. Their daughter Ruth Marguerite (Daisy) b. 1861 N.Z
John Shrimpton, bookbinder, and his wife Rebecca, and that both were still alive in Oxford at the time of the 1841 census. The Shrimpton children I know of were Matilda, Thomas (c1806), John(c1809), Ingram(1813) and George (christened St Ebbes, Oxford 2 February 1817)
Matilda died on 13 October 1873 at 2a St Johns Road, St Giles, Oxford.
