THE LATE MRS HAYHURST.
The remains of the relict of the late Mr John Hayhurst were interred yesterday m the Temuka cemetery. The body, enclosed m a handsomely mounted coffin of polished oak, lay in St. Peter's Church from noon until 2.30 p.m., when the preliminary portion of the funeral service was read by the vicar, the Rev. T. Farley, and the Rev. T. A. Hamilton, of Fendalton, and formerly of Temuka, read the lesson. Mrs Farley presided at the organ, and there was a full choir, the hymns sung being Nos. 288 and 399, Ancient and Modern. As the body was borne from the church the Dead March was played. Although a hearse was provided by the undertaker, Mr Beckingham, the coffin was carried from the church to the cemetery by relays of bearers, selected from members of the Masonic Lodge St. George, of which Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst, son of the deceased, is Master. The final service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. T. A. Hamilton. There was a large attendance of the general public, as well as of the tenants of the Green Hayes estate and personal friends of the deceased. Conspicuous among them were many old identities. The floral offering were very, handsome. The deceased lady lived to the ripe age of 80 years, 60 of which were passed m the colony. She was of an unobtrusive, kindly disposition, with a decided leaning towards the early settlers, but always ready to assist m any worthy object. The Church of England at Temuka is indebted to her for the gift of a site for a parish hall, for the site upon which the new church of St. Peter stands, and many other valuable donations. Her end was not unexpected, as her health had failed a good , deal lately.

Mr W.G. Campbell was engaged yesterday with his heavy traction engine rolling
patches of newly laid broken metal in the streets, and the process made a decent
roadway. Wharf street was one of the roughest bite. Now one can traverse it
without being reminded of a Mount Cook moraine.
