F.G.R.

Frederick George RadcliffeF.G.R. - Frederick George Radcliffe (1863-1923) Farmer, photographer from Onerahi, Whangarei. Arrived in New Zealand in the early 1890s. For twenty years from the early1900s he took trips throughout the country to photograph rural and urban New Zealand for his postcard business each on quarter plate glass negatives, nearly 8,000. A member of his family neatly printed the name of the picture, N.Z., initials 'F.G.R.' and consecutive number and the postcards were sent to retailers nation wide. A rare monument for F.G.R. - taking time out on the veranda enjoying morning tea. Thanks to him we have these wonderful moments captured on film. The postcards show the more than one visit to the Mt Cook region, winter and summer, his transportation, the old Hermitage and the retreating glaciers. His postcards are often found for sale on:
Search FGR. If you have a number I am missing please let me know the description of the scene. Thanks. Postcards The Auckland Cities Libraries holds a collection of some 2000 glass plate negatives. The Auckland Library collection was acquired by the Library before 1975. A good collection.
