An oak leaf beside a name would most likely mean the person was mentioned in dispatches for something quite courageous and though didn't qualify for a medal, his bravery was noted in his war records.
Remembrance Day
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month of 1918 Germany surrendered bringing a
close to the Great War, "the war to end all wars" that 13 million civilians and
8.5 million soldiers lost their lives. Bells still tolled in New Zealand on
Remembrance Day 1998 with memorable services and wreaths being laid at cenotaphs
throughout the country. Well after WW2 a two minute silence was still observed throughout
the country and trams would even stop in Wellington at the eleventh hour. The 'Last
Post' is still played everyday in Ypres, Belgium.
