Auckland Weekly News 29 April 1936 p47 At Timaru: The Rev. J. Milburn Stewart president of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association, places a wreath on the memorial.
Poverty Bay Herald, 26 April 1919, Page 5
TIMARU, last night. Anzac Day was favoured by fine weather. A military parade was held in which a hundred returned soldiers took part with a few territorials and a big muster of cadets. No soldiers from the Orthopaedic Hospital were present. At King George's Place a cross had been erected and on this the returned men placed a huge wreath, and relatives of the deceased men placed wreaths and flowers. There were no speeches, but the Regimental Band played the Dead March and appropriate hymns, and the "Last Post" was sounded 'by the bugles. A large crowd assembled to witness the parade and ceremony. In the evening the returned soldiers attended commemoration services in the Anglican and the united churches, and afterwards opened larger club rooms.
Attended the dawn service. On April 26th 2014 I went back the next morning after Anzac Day and all the wreaths were gone. A few poppies were scattered around. Went to the bay. No wreaths. Where were they?

At a meeting of the South Canterbury War Memorial Committee, held recently, Mr. Hall, on behalf of Messrs. P. W. Rule and H. Hall, joint architects for the memorial, gave full details in regard to the plans, and replied to a number of questions. The weight of the whole structure, he said, from the ground line, would be about 80 tons. It would be the largest piece of granite work ever undertaken in New Zealand. It was agreed that the best of everything should be put into the monument, Mr. Bell stating that it should be built to last 1000 years. Mr. Hall stated that the cross on the monument was of the same proportions as the cross in St. Paul's, London. The description of the monument is as follows: The foundations are being carried down 30 feet below the surface of the roadway to the level of the roadway at the corner opposite the Hydro Hotel [location was changed]. They take the form of a reinforced concrete raft at the railway level, from which rises a concrete pier, eight feet square, to the level of the roadway. The concrete reinforcement is then carried through the base of the column, and right up through the shaft of the column to the cross at the top. The complete design takes the form of a Corinthian marble column, resting, on a granite pedestal, the supreme feature' being a bronze cross surmounting the shaft. The first portion of the monument on the ground level will be a stylobate, which will be 24 feet square, and 3 feet 9 inches high. This will consist of Timaru bluestone with a rock-faced plinth, and axed asher work and coping. The pedestal of the column will be located in the centre of the stylobate, and will be 8 feet 3 inches square. The pedestal will consist of three tiers, a bluestone die 4 feet high; a granite base 3 feet 3 inches high, and a granite pedestal 7 feet high, making a total height of 19 feet 3 inches from the ground level to the commencement of the column. The pedestal will be embellished by a cornice and neck mould. The column will be 28 feet 3 inches high; it will be three feet in diameter at the bottom, and 2 feet 7 inches at the top, and will have an entasis of 1 ½ inches. The shaft will have 24 flutings, from base to neck mould. The capital will be 3 feet 4 inches high, and will be fashioned upon the purest of Greek examples. Upon the abacus of the capital will be placed the marble pedestal which will support the bronze cross. This second pedestal forms a-basis for the cross, and is 3 feet 9 inches in height, and will be made of marble. The cross itself will be of cast and burnished bronze. It will run to a height of 9 feet in the form of a Greek cross with foliations, resting upon a sphere 2 feet in diameter. The sphere is connected by a series of mouldings to support, carrying a wreath of carved laurel leaves. Below this again are four symbolical touches. The bronze work of the cross will be specially drained by copper pipes through the centre of the column to prevent the marble from being stained. The columns and obelisk are symbolical of strength; the cross, which is embellished by laurel leaves representing victory, is symbolical of sacrifice.
