Wellington, August 24. The annual report of the Dead letter Office contains the usual assortment of curiosities. This year 99,762 unclaimed letters, an increase of 3 per cent, were dealt with, 60,912 being returned to the writers, 101 re-issued, 3996 destroyed, and the balance returned unopened. 5254 book packets and circulars were also returned to foreign countries. 519 of these were returned to the senders through the Dead Letter Office, and 679 returned by the Chief Postmasters... 619 newspapers and 431 books, and other articles without addresses, were also received. Of those, 66 were delivered and 91 book packages forwarded to London for return to the senders. 94 letters were posted without address, 66 with libellous addresses were intercepted, 128 loiters were imperfectly and wrongly addressed, 2812 letters were refused, and 9 letters were posted with previously used stamps.

Timaru Herald, 2 December 1899, Page 5 BANKNOTE POETS.
Whether or not it is true that the "world knows little of its greatest men," it is perfectly true, that it, knows little of many of its poets, whose modesty impels them to conceal their choicest verses where few eyes can see them. A large volume might be composed exclusively of verses which have been committed to the backs of bank-notes, and which, if not of the highest merit as poetry, are, at any rate, full of humour and human interest.

Birthday greeting to probably some young nephew
If I had only time, my boy,
I'd write a dull and lengthy letter
To wish you many " bright returns" —
But still methinks it might be better,
And more your happiness promote,
To send instead this little note.

You came a day my life to bless
And all my woes dispel;
And now another claims your love-
Sweet messenger, farewell.

You come, you pass,
Alack! Alas!
You ne'er come back,
Alas! Alack!

'Twas sweet to meet, but oh! how sad
To lose the only friend I had!

I would not love thee, dear, so much
Loved I not liquor more;
But when thy golden change has fled,
For me the workhouse door.

The last of all thy family thou,
For thee and me the same vocation,
I go my creditors to face,
And thou goes't into liquid-ation.

Music hath charms to soothe the breast
Far more than lines of "potes" ;
But, oh, the music I love best
Is made of five-pound notes.

Oh! glad the day when first we met,
And sad the day we parted!
You made me merry, blithe, and gay,
And leave me broken-hearted.
