Obituary Timaru Herald 8 July 1933
Mr Joseph Bird, born in Daventry, Northamptonshire, served in the Royal Navy, prior to his coming to New Zealand in the sailing ship Sanker, which arrived in Timaru in 1876. On arrival at Waimate with his wife and child, he built a house at Painstown, in which he lived until eight years ago. Since that time he had resided with his daughter, Mrs W J Butchers, at Fairview, Timaru. Parents of Joseph Bird were Samuel Bird and Sarah Foster.
Cyclopedia entry mentions the "Ballochmye" 1874. Yes, the family is listed.

Joseph Bird d. 25 June 1933 aged 87
Their son James, drowned through the sinking of the Hospital ship 'Marquette', while on active service 24 Oct 1916 aged 26.
Arthur Joseph Bird, Rifleman 23/364, 1st Bn. 3rd, N.Z. Rifle Brigade, killed in action at Somme, France, Friday 15 Sept 1916 aged 29.
Their eldest son Charles died in Savannah, USA 25 Feb 1900 aged 23.
Their infant son died at sea 1875.
