Welcome to the Allen County, Ohio Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society Website.

Our Chapter was formed to create and build interest in preserving and collecting genealogical and historical records relating to the early settlers of Allen County. We encourage sharing genealogical information with other Allen County researchers.

Chapter meetings are held at 1:45 at the Folsum Auditorium in the Allen County Museum, 650 W. Market St., Lima, Ohio 45801. The public is always welcome and invited to attend.

Join

Any interested person may become a member upon the payment of annual dues to the Chapter. Chapter dues are $15.00 per individual per year or $18.00 per year for a joint membership. Joint membership is for family of two (2) persons living at the same address. Joint membership receives one publication only. Membership runs from January through December. If you join during the year, you will receive all the newsletters for the current year.

Benefits of membership are: 4 quarterly issues of Allen County Ancestry, the newsletter of the Allen County Genealogical Society, an annual membership directory, which comes out in March, and 10% discount on ACGS publications and special events, such as workshops.

First Families Of Allen County

Were your ancestors in Allen County before 1840?

Then you may be eligible to become a member of the Allen County First Families.

To qualify for a First Families of Allen County designation, your ancestor must have lived in Allen County by 1840. You also must be a member of the Allen County Genealogy Society to participate in the First Family program. Your application must be submitted by June 1st. Once your ancestors are proven you will be accepted as a First Family member. An induction ceremony is held each July of each year to honor recipients. Honorees receive a First Family pin & certificate.

Research Assistance

Volunteers will research with the material in the Genealogy Library. When making requests, please put "ACGS Volunteer Look-up" in the subject line and send email.

The Allen County Genealogy Society, a chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society and a member of the Federation of Genealogy Societies was chartered in 1971. The first meeting was held on February 12, 1971 in the Elizabeth M. MacDonell Library of the Allen County Museum to organize the chapter. There were over 30 people in attendance.

Allen County Chapter, OGS meets on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:45 p.m. with the exceptions of January, August, and December. The meetings are held at the Allen County Museum, 620 West Market Street, Lima, Ohio 45801. The programs include interesting topics on various genealogical subjects and local history. The public is always invited.

Our annual events include First Families of Allen County Lineage Society induction ceremony held every July. To join First Families of Allen County, your ancestor had to reside in Allen County by 1840. An application to join is available in PDF on the website or by contacting ACGS.

The Allen County Genealogy Society's First Families index and inducted members’ applications to use for your research are located in the Elizabeth M. MacDonell Library in the Allen County Museum.

Other regular activities include field trips, workshops, and joint programs with the Allen County Historical Society. The annual business meeting and election of officers is held in November at the annual banquet. The executive board meets in January and as necessary throughout the year.
Volunteers are available to help with research by request at Elizabeth M. MacDonell Library. Please contact the Society in advance of your trip. The volunteers also do lookups requested by members.

The Allen County Genealogical Society donates materials to the Elizabeth M. MacDonell Library in memory of any members who pass away. They have purchased and donated microfilm viewers, microfilm, many books and other materials. ACGS donates copies of all of their publications to the library.

Our newsletter, Allen County Ancestry, is published quarterly. The index for the newsletter is published in the first issue of the following year. A members’ directory is published each March.

The Society strives to preserve genealogical records and compiles them into publications. Our publications may be purchased through the Society.
