A Little History of “Amanda”
Carolyn Lacey wrote this about the Amanda Cemetery
and Amanda history.
In 1827 Amanda was laid out by Samuel DICKEY and Robert CODDINGTON along the Miami Canal (present day Verity Parkway) The town was named for Samuel's mother Amanda. Adam DICKEY with the help of his son Samuel constructed a gristmill on the Miami River near Amanda. The flour mill was probably the big employer until the paper mills Crystal and Excello came to the area. Samuel DICKEY retired in the 1870's and transferred to his son Adam. In the 1880's the flour mill was sold to Archibald Jewell and with John Shafor the mill was converted to making strawboard. This info is from the book about the history of Amanda. The Dickey house is still standing and used now as a warehouse for the paper mill.
