How to Get Passenger List Images
From the Ellis Island Site

I have tried to do this several times, then finally got a flash of inspiration. Below you will find instructions, complete with screen shots on how to finally get those passenger list images without having to spend a small fortune on the item.

I hope you can all follow this.

First, you have to actually find your record. There is a great site for searching the Ellis Island Site in one easy step called, easily enough, Searching the Ellis Island Database in One Step. The URL for that site is: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html.

I found Great-Grandpa!I entered my great-grandfather's name, August Sonnenberg. I got the following reply from the search page.

View Original ManifestNext, click on the link shown. Then you will want to look at the original manifest.

Open Frame in New WindowOnce you get the second "screen" loading, you have to "Open frame in new window" as shown to the right.

It's Done!!Please Note: Make sure you wait until the new window is finished loading.

Save the Image As...Now, this is where it will get tricky... <grin> Right click on the fully downloaded image. You will get a menu from which to choose. I use Netscape, so this is what you will see using it. Click on "Save Image As". If you use Internet Explorer, right click on the image, you will get a menu and on it, click on "Save Picture As".

Watch Were Your Image GoesNow, you will get a dialog box, asking where you want to save your image. Please pay close attention to where you save this. It will make it extremely easier when you try to open it in your graphics program!

Remove the Ok... Now for the really important part. So pay close attention! <grin>

Before you click on "save", you are going to have to change the file name. Please notice in the screen shot above, the name of the file is listed as: "tif2gif.exe". If you save it as it is, it will never open. Trust me, I went round and round with this image the first time I tried this. You must change this.

From the drop down on the dialog box, choose either GIF or JPG file type. Then you must delete the part of the file name that says .exe. Then, and only then, can you click "Save" and expect to open this file.

Congratulations! You have just saved one page of the manifest!
