OBITUARY FROM a (unidentified) BUCYRUS PAPER
1 Oct. 1906 - Monday
HE RESTS - From His Labors and His Works Do Follow Him.

John Leonhart, one of the aged and respected pioneer farmers of Chatfield township, passed from earth to his reward at 10:3_ o'clock Sunday morning, His death occurring at his home. He had been in feeble health for about a year, but became seriously ill only a few days prior his death. He passed away peacefully and painlessly, like one who "wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."

The funeral will be held Wednesday, meeting at the residence at 9 a.m. and going to New Washington. Interment will be made in the Lutheran cemetery, after which the regular funeral service will be held at the Lutheran church, Rev. D Ph. Ebert conducting the services.

Mr. Leonhart was the son of George and Margaret (Capst) Leonhart, and was born in Stark county Oct. 4, 1834 living to the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 26 days. His parents were natives of Alsace, Germany. In 1837 the family came to Crawford county, and here John grew to manhood, and for a period of nearly sixty eight years had been a resident of Chatfield township. At the age of twenty-four years he purchased a small farm and began life for himself. He was progressive, industrious and energetic, and as a natural result attained the highest success in his chosen avocation.

He was united in marriage in October, 1857, to Miss Elizabeth Ackerman. To them were born nine children, all of whom with their mother survive to mourn the father's death. The children are: Catherine M., Jefferson, George W., William A., Matilda, wife of Charles Foster, Gustavus A., Caroline E., wife of George Marquart, and Emma, wife of William Gangluff, and Franklin.

John Leonhart was a man widely known and universally respected. His excellent judgement was shown in his management of his own affairs and he was called by his neighbors to serve them in positions of honor and responsibility. This service was rendered faithfully and conscientiously, and was always valuable and satisfactory. He was a man of unbending probity, and worthy of the trust reposed in him by all who knew him. He was a sincere Christian gentleman, a member of the German Lutheran Evangelical church and a sincere exponent of the faith he professed. His work was well done until he had passed the allotted span of human life, and his strength had failed. He fought the good fight and kept the faith. Now he rests from his labors and his works do follow him.

(Ed. note: Bill Marquart adds the following information to the obituary.)

OBITUARY (submitted by Bill Marquart - believed to be from New Washington Herald, date unknown)

Michael Marquart died from old age, Thursday, December 15 at 12:20 a.m. He was one of five children of Michael Marquart and his wife Margaret, nee Feuchter and was born April 27, 1817 at Goebrichen, Grand Duchy of Baden. The boy was baptized in church on the following day and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, March 27, 1831 by Rev. Graebuer. Michael learned the mason trade and remained at home until May 1839 when he sailed up the Rhine and by way of Havre de Grace across the Atlantic to New York where after 57 days he arrived. Since his capital was only $2 a friend loaned him enough to enable him to go to Tuscarawas county, Ohio where near New Philadelphia he found work in an ore mine, so that before many days he was able to return the money loaned.

The young man then worked at his trade with good success and so abundantly did God bless his labors that in 1843 he could purchase the present homestead, which in those days was mostly forest. It did not remain so. The woods were cleared and a good farm was made and in 1861 a new dwelling instead of the old block house was built, and in later the happy proprietor was able not only to add some land to his farm, but to purchase three farms besides. The deceased was married twice. From his first marriage with Miss Catherine Streile from Wurtemburg, who in 1854 preceded him to eternity, he had 5 children, of whom only one, Mrs. Caroline Langyahr survives. From his second marriage to Miss Caroline Wilhelmina Langjahr; who died Mar. 13, 1900, there were seven children, five of whom survive: Three sons, August, Jefferson, and George and two daughters, Mrs. F. E. Leonhart and Mrs. W. C. Beckstein. There also survive 22 grand- children and 5 great grandchildren, also a young relative who from infancy had his home with the Marquarts.

With Father Marquart not only the oldest and only living charter member but also a very faithful one of St. John's Lutheran church, has passed away, a well known and respected citizen also of this community. His age was 87 years, 7 months and 18 days.

Herman Langyahr of Norwalk, Ernest Beckstein and Wm. Beckstein and wife of Bellevue, and Joseph and Edward Stockmaster of Siam were those from a distance who attended the funeral.
