OBITUARY

PETER SNYDER died at his late residence on Columbus street, on Friday, April 30, 1897, at 2 o'clock p.m. aged 92 years and 1 month. His funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Davidson, pastor, preaching the funeral sermon. He was assisted by Rev. Booth of the M.E. church.
While the Presbyterian church is large and roomy, on this occasion it was not ample enough to accomodate all who came to pay their last respects to the deceased, and many were obliged to remain on the outside. After the services the remains were conveyed to the city cemetery, where, by loving hands, the casket containing all that was mortal was lowered into its final resting place, and as the clods of earth fell into the grave we were reminded of the language of an inspired writer: "Thou shall come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season," and again, "He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him anymore."
Peter Snyder was born near Steubenville, Jefferson county, Ohio, in 1805. In about 1808 he came with his parents who settled within three miles of what is now Crestline. Here he engaged in pursuit of man's first occupation, that of clearing away the forest and tilling the soil. Until 1872 he resided on the farm, when he removed to this place where he lived till death called him hence. On the 26th of January, 1826, he was joined in marriage to Lavina Gilliland. Thirteen children were born to them - eight boys and five girls, six of whom still survive him - three boys and three girls. After a happy married life together covering nearly a half century, the wife was called to her long home in 1875.
On January 1st, 1877, he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Mary S. Kline, who died Dec. 10, 1879. On January 7th, 1881, he married Mrs. Mary A. Shafer, who still survives him with two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Moody, who lives in California and Mary Steel, residing near Leesville, Of his first marriage there are living out of 24 grandchildren, 14: one great grandchild is living and one dead.
------------------------------

Mr. and Mrs. Gilliland, Mrs. J. M. Talbott, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Tuttle and Mr. and Mrs. Simon Snyder attended the funeral of Peter Snyder at Crestline Sunday - Galion Leader.

DEATHS

Died, last Thursday, three months old INFANT SON of CHARLES and Mrs. CHRISTMAN. The disease was at first reported to be diptheria, but this was wrong as the child died with lung fever.

Died last Thursday of diptheria, CATHARINE ANGIE HAYS, four years old daughter of John Hays, and was buried on Friday in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
This little girl was sick less than four days. The sincere sympathies of the community are with Mr. and Mrs. Hays in their bereavment, for although they had a numerous family of children they had "not one to spare." Had Angie been their only child their hearts would not be any more sorrowful. Under such trials, however, faith comes to our relief and teaches us to look forward and beyond, when we shall meet our loved ones again.

JOHN H. BERRY, aged 70 years, who has been ailing since last June, died last Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, and was buried on Tuesday.
Mr. Berry was one of the pioneers of Crestline. He having settled and lived here continously since 1857. He helped to build the Ohio & Pennsylvania R. R. now the P.F.W. & C. He was an employe under the different companies operating that system for forty years. Mr. Berry was born in Washington City, D. C. Was married to Miss Amanda Richards, who survives him in 1845. They had seven children, four boys and three girls. One boy and one girl are dead.
John Berry was a honest, hard working man, Kind hearted to a fault. The misfortune of his fellow men always enlisted his sincerest sympathies. We can truly way(sic) he was esteened(sic) and respected by every one who knew him. And it with honest regret that we have to chronicle his passage from life to death.

Wednesday evening of last week MRS. (JOHN) HOLLAND died very suddenly of heart failure. Only a few minutes before she expired she and her daughter Kate were in the bed room doing some work together when she remarked that she had a pain in her thumb, this became so severe that she stepped out into the sitting room and sat down on a sofa. At her request Kate went into the Kitchen to get her some medicine. Kate got the medicine and went back to give it to her mother, but when she got back to the sofa her mother was dead.
Mrs. Holland was the wife of John McDermott Holland who survives her. Her age was 49 years. The family has lived in Crestline twenty-seven years. We could readily extend this to a whole column in extolling the good qualities of Mrs. Holland, but we will condense it by saying that she was a typical American lady, a good wife, and a good mother, and a good neighbor.
