Monroe Street Cemetery wants to make Ohio History with an installation of a historical marker to tell the story of this wonderful old cemetery. Would you please help us? Ohio Historical Maker Flier

Join the Friends of Monroe Street Cemetery on Sunday October 11th at 2:00pm, as they present "Meet the Neighbors: Crime and Punishment" a dramatic representation of the Cemetery's most influential residents.  The tour will take place at Monroe Cemetery, 3207 Monroe Street, and will feature figures that settled Ohio City and shaped the history of the City of Cleveland.  Thank you everyone for the great success of this fundraising event!!

History:
Brooklyn Township acquired this cemetery when Josiah Barber and his brother-in-law, Richard Lord, sold part of lot no. 69 in January 1836 for $160.00, to be used "forever as a public burying ground."  Ohio City was incorporated on March 3, 1836, the township cemetery became the city cemetery.  The Ohio City council legislated rules and regulations, appointed a sexton, and arranged for systematic platting, as well as for the purchase and storage of a hearse.  In 1854, Ohio City was annexed to Cleveland, the cemetery was also known as the "West Side Cemetery."
