The Ohio Historical Marker has been ordered and we are hoping for a dedication date of June 14, 2009, the 156th Anniversary of Woodland Cemetery.  With the reconstruction of Quincy Avenue, it is recommended we obtain a 2nd Ohio Historical Marker and cemetery identification sign for the Woodland Cemetery entrance off Quincy Avenue.  Please help support this effort!!

Place your family name in stone to be used in the Memorial walkway or adopt a veteran from the 7th OVI or the 23rd OVI (please note that WC means buried in Woodland Cemetery, Mon means listed on the regimental monument)

History:
Woodland's creation derived from a failed real estate speculation. In 1832, Col. George Bomford of Washington, DC, acquired 200 acres in Newburgh Township.  He sold 100 acres to John Whipple, Providence, RI, and 60 acres to Benjamin F. Butler, Pres. Andrew Jackson's attorney general.  The trio divided the land in 40 5-acre lots just before the Panic of 1837.   By 1851 the land remained unsold.  Samuel Starkweather, the local agent, sold Butler's share for the long sought second city cemetery.  Woodland Cemetery was designed in rural cemetery style by New York landscape gardener Howard Daniels.  The name was inspired by a fanciful poetic description of an unseen Cleveland by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell.  Former Ohioan Daniels provided a 20-acre plan, "as beautifully prepared for a burial place as fancy and taste could desire."  Dedicated on 14 June 1853.

Genealogy research through mail:  Currently free.  Please send a LONG self addressed stamped envelope (LSASE) with your request.  Please don't forget to include your snail mail address in the letter, sometimes the envelopes get separated from the request.  Requests take approximate 4 to 6 weeks for response.

Would you like a photograph of a headstone? I will do City of Cleveland (owned) Cemeteries.  If someone else would like to register in doing requests at other cemeteries, please let me know.  I get a lot of requests for other cemeteries and I am not capable of doing them all.  (I am independent from the City of Cleveland.  They are in no way participating in photographs of headstones and are not liable for such services I render.)

Wanted:  I would be most interested in sharing bios and/or pictures of the inhabitants of this cemetery.  If you would like to share some history about a loved one buried in Woodland Cemetery, please email me.  I will post the information on this web site to share.

I am also looking for pictures, old pictures if possible of what this cemetery looked like long ago and of graves at this cemetery.
