George and
Luludia Chakiris
Source Dayton Church History, newly
wed, came from Asia Minor first to Middletown and later, in
October 1915, settled in Dayton. They left Greece since
George was not willing to serve in the Turkish army during
WWI. Mr. Chakiris was born in Brussa in Asia Minor and
Luludia was born in a small village near Xanthi in Thrace
six children: Demetrius, Jane, Helen, Peter, Magdalene and
Evanthia.
|
Nick D Notes:
I knew another Chakiris family in Middletown that moved to
Dayton just before the 1940s. I do not remember the
father's name, but his wife was Fotini (Florence??). Mrs.
Chakiris' Greek name was Luluthia (flower in Greek). I said
it was Fotini, and that is wrong. They had a son Dimitri,
a daughter Mag (Magdalene), and younger daughter Eve.
There may have been another son as well. Mr. Chakiris died
around 1940-1 Eve eventually got into politics and became
a city commissioner or county commissioner or some- thing in
Dayton or Montgomery County. Kiki sent me Eve's obit about
three years ago. (The Greeks who knew her well called here
Babe, probably from the Turkish word "bebek," for she was
the youngest. She was your sister Mary's age.)Jim J
Demetrion baptized one of Dimitri's kids. Helen Petroglou
remembers Fotini and the whole Chakiris clan, for they were
friends with Helen's mother as well. Dimitri had a store
that sold radios, phonographs, (maybe appliances), etc.
Note Helen
Petroglou Stephan: George and family moved to a farm
north of Middletown across the Miami River.. Helen visited
the family at the farm. The family then moved to
Miamisburg.

Nick D notes:
A
bachelor, Jimmy Chakiris. may be the Jim Chakiris who a few
years later lived on Logan Ave, had two girls, worked at
Armco, and was from Susurluk.
3 July Nick D notes: I am now
going to run the Demetrius Chakiris listing by you to see
what you think.
The Jim Chakiris I knew lived on Logan Ave
(one block off Crawford St), had an American wife (your
listing says Demetrius' wife was Florence), and two
daughters (your listing says 1919-1920). The daughters I
knew were not more than 6 years older than I (which makes
them born around 1924-25. He always spoke Greek to me but
Turkish to my folks. He was from Susurluk, and a patrioti of
the Thomas family. He was probably the most handsome Greek
man I have ever met--tall, slim, well dressed, and resembled
Robert Taylor (movie star). Thalia can verify my
description of him. He had a tragic family life. His wife
was finally institutionalized at Longview and he raised the
girls by himself. He died when I was in service and I do
not know what happened to his daughter.
Jas. Chakeris - 1935-36, 1937-38 and 1939 MCD -he lived on N. Broad or Main.
Roger
Miller note: looked at the following city directories: 1930,
1933-34, 1935-36, 1937-38, and 1939 and did not fine any Jim Chakiris on Logan Avenue. There was a Jas. Chakeris listed
in the last three, but he lived on N. Broad or Main. The
only other listing that was close was Peter Chakeres (note
the spelling). He lived on Harrison or Webst. Roger wrote
also I have gone through the 1940s City Directories and
have not found anything that matched Jim Chakiris on Logan
Avenue
Thalia remembers Jim Chakiris on Logan and living in an
apartment on Central Ave a few doors east of the Anchor
Restaurant. He remarried and his second wife had a daughter
Carel Chaney who was a friend of Carol Netsos.
Georgia Comminos notes: The Jim Chakeris that I remember worked at
Armco. He was married and his wife died about maybe five
years ago. The Chakeris lived across from me on the corner
of Lopane and Park Drive. He is deceased and his daughter
sold the house she was a nurse, she was having health
problems and moved away? They were on Lopane when we built
our house on Park Drive. Mother used to visit her until she
became ill. Maybe this is the same person that Nick is
talking about.
George Christy notes: Georgia Comminos is correct in
saying that the Jim Chakeris who lived on Lopane is the
same man who lived on Logan earlier. I remember my dad
stopping by his house on Logan for some reason and during
the brief visit I was introduced to his daughter who was a
year or two younger than me (I am 74). She was pretty with
beautiful black hair and was to start college soon. Our
paths never crossed again.
Nick gave a good description of his physical appearance.
Handsome and trim, he was also very muscular – not like a
body builder, but very strong. When I was working at the
Armco East Works as a co-op student, I came across him at
the old stainless hand mills, tongs in hand, feeding red
hot sheets of stainless steel into the rolls. A person on
the other side would feed the sheet back. They would
repeat this until the sheet was ready. He looked to be the
personification of the Iron Man statue. I remember him
having a booming baritone voice, no doubt developed partly
as a result of making himself heard in a rather noisy
workplace and partly a compensation for hearing loss
suffered from years on the job. When I saw him again on
Lopane in his retirement years, I was surprised at how his
appearance belied his age – he had aged quite well.

D note:
Gus Christy
aka Constantine Christoforos. I think that Virginia Christy
told me that the family name is really Chrisoforos or Christoforos or something like that. Gus Christy was from Veletler, and most of the villagers were in Macedonia in
1953. Gus Christy's grandmother Helen (Helen was my
grandfather Dimitri's sister) asked me about Pamukchuoglu.
That was the Turkish surname for Gus Christy.
Demetroula from a village on the outskirts of Brusa.

George
Christy: Elias Constantopoulos owned the grocery at the
corner of Columbia and Broad. I believe he died in the
mid-1930's. His daughter, Georgia, managed the store after
her dad's death because her mother was not proficient in
English. She was a very close friend of my parents and
baptized my brother ,Louis, in 1936. (Louis being the
anglisized version of Elias). Georgia married Dr. Michael
Michaelson and moved to Dayton in the early 40's. I
believe the POULOS you wondered about to be the same
person as it became popular to shorten long Greek names
back then.
If
memory serves me right(and I admit being fuzzy on this) I
think that DK owned the grocery for a short time following
Georgia and before Anna Garofolas bought the store. I
think the city directory supports this. I will never
forget Georgia's mother, Athena, was passionate about
dandelion greens (horta) which she served for lunch and
dinner every day of the growing season. Otherwise, I
enjoyed summer stays at their rural home and veternary
clinic where I learned a lot about animal care..
