George Revelos:
I would
be honored to have the Elite's story added to the web
page. By the way, I noticed in your Greek Research
K, a John Karkaris who worked at the Purity in Oxford.
John Kardaras of Oxford and a Mr. Minas from Hamilton were
partners of that store. They and their families were
members of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek church in
Middletown. Mr. Kardaras had three daughters, Irene,
Harriet and Helen. Helen married and lived in
Detroit, Harriet married Judge George Guinaris of Dayton
(Deceased, not sure of spelling) and Helen married and
lives in Tampa. Mr. Minas had two children, Ann who
married Gus Lazares of Hamilton and George who married a
non Greek and lived in Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Minas, Ann,
her husband and George are all deceased. Mrs.
Kardaras died years ago and Mr. Kardaras remarried and
lived in Dayton where he passed away. His second wife was
from Cincinnati I believe. I can't remember her name
and am not sure if she is still living. George Minas
operated a Tire store in Hamilton for many years. He died
of brain cancer and his wife ran the tire store after his
death. Cleo Garvin's brother John Garofalos worked
at the Purity when he attended Miami. He had an
interesting story on the Purity. Mr. Kardaras and
Mr. Minas had a falling out and would not speak to one
another. They worked different shifts. One would
come in put on his apron and the other would leave with
nary a hello. This went on for several years until Mr.
Minas or his wife, after he passed away, sold their share
to Mr. Kardaras.

Tom (Athanasios) Karras was born in Alea,
Greece (near Argos) and came to America with his
brother Vasilios Karras in the early 1900’s.
They settled in the Dayton area, worked on the railroad and
later on they each opened a restaurant. When Tom returned to
Alea many years later, to a country ravaged by WWII and
civil war, he saw the hardships being endured by his brother
George and George’s wife Ourania and their five children.
When he returned to the U.S. he arranged to have them come
to Dayton. The first to come in 1950 was his nephew James
and nieces Vasiliki and Katherine. By 1954 all members of
George’s family were together in Dayton. The children
finished school here and James and Andreas served in the
U.S. army. By working together and saving their money, the
children of George and Ourania were able to own and operate
several businesses in the Dayton area. “Barba” Tom (Uncle
Tom) was in the restaurant business with Frank Karras (no
relation)
George N. Revelos:
Bill Karras had nephews that ran the Wilmington Pike Market
south of I-675. Years back, I shopped there for Feta. I
think one of their sons is George Karras who has a Greek
Band out of Dayton that plays at our festival. His band is
a fixture at the Dayton Festival. I've forgotten the name
of the band. It might be the Greek Keys. They also play in
Florida during the winter. In fact, they played the St.
Petersburgh church festival a few years ago when I was
there. The Florida Churches always have their festivals in
the winter before lent.
Nick D. note
Pete Sarris (Ted's father) told us a couple of times that
Bill had Dayton relatives, but I am not certain about his
information.

Nick D notes: Pete Kavouras' brother
committed suicide by jumping off a bridge in Hamilton, OH in the early
1930s. Your list has three notations on a Nick/Nicholas Kavouras. The
1930 census lists a Nicholas Kavouras as a resident of Hamilton. This
could well be Pete Kavouras' brother. After the death of the elder
Kavouras, the deceased's wife and young son (name: George Kavouras)
moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Nick D notes: Pete Kavouras WW1 Like all Greeks, he was a PFC (private
first class). He was gassed in France and was given an army pension.
He worked limited hours at his restaurant (East End Restaurant) and
spent afternoons and evenings gardening or at the VFW. George is buried
next to his father. George's tombstone reads "First Lieutenant George

Nick D: The first mention of Pete Kavouras in the Middletown
Directory is 1924-25 as proprietor of the East End Restaurant. He might
have come to Middletown after WWI because his brother Nick and sister
Helen were in the area. The first listing of the East End Restaurant
was with Tom Marianos (1918, 1919-1920). Marianos and his family lived
on Woodlawn, a block away from the restaurant. The next listing was an
American, George Williams (1923-24). (At least I think he was an
American.I will check your lists). Pete Kavouras dates were 1924-47.
All of the following is speculation: There is a Kavouras and a
Hamilton, Ohio connection. Nick Kavouras moved to Hamilton and tried a
business there. Pete and Filanthi Kavouras were very good friends with
the Nick Johnson family. The Johnsons came visiting frequently. The
Kavourases baptized one of the Johnson kids. After George married
Rita, Mrs. Kavouras was instrumental in the Sophie Kalomeras-Johnson
(lawyer) matchmaking. The Kavourases and Johnsons are not patrioti
although they are both from the Peloponnesus.

POLIO!...the word that struck
fear in the hearts of many parents during the 1940's and 1950's. During
the the height of the polio epidemic in 1952, nearly 60,000 cases with
more than 3,000 deaths were reported in the United States alone. I can
remember seeing pictures of children stricken with polio in rows of Iron
Lungs looking up into the mirrors that were attached to the machines.
Charlene K.: The
oldest child of the George & Mary Kiniyalocts (Kinigalakis) was Mary
Kiniyalocts-Alexander. She was a victim of polio. As a result, she had
trouble with her feet and legs all her life. She always wore a particular
style of Capezzio mary janes most always.

he was the Trading Area General Manager for I.B.M. in Indiana. At the same
time, he also received the Governor's Sagamore of the Wabash honor for
outstanding community service and devotion. In 1992, he formed Christy
Management Services Co., serving business clients in the United States,
Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. Most recently he served on the
Advisory Board for BSA Life Structures. Over the past 35 years, he was

Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple, with prayers at 7:30
p.m. A celebration of life and faith will be held at Holy Trinity Greek
Orthodox Church, located at 4011 N. Pennsylvania Street at 1 p.m. on
Friday, January 6. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made
to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra or Holy Trinity Orthodox Church.
Cleo G: KOOKOOTSEDES family came as a surprise to
Nick and others. The Kookootsedes parents must have lived in Middletown
for a few years since the son Chris graduated from Sidney High School.
Interesting that Chris changed his name to Christy. (I think he did it
to confuse us. What do you think?)
You
should find many articles about the Kavouras family. They were active
in the community.

Grocer
Nick D:
Peter and Elle Kourges operated
a Mom & Pop grocery store at 428 Curtis (a couple blocks
from MHS). They must have closed the store in the '40s or
possibly Peter died. They owned a beautiful pet parrot. The
store was attached to their house so they could go from the
store directly into the house. There were no children. It has
taken me months to recall their name and then I found them
listed in Popi's Middletown Immigrants list. Pronounced: Kour-ges with the accent on the "g."
Georgia Comminos:
Peter Kourges
was my mother's brother. Uncle Pete had the Paradise Grocery
on Curtis Street. After my uncle died, Elle live with us
for a short period of time and then went to Minneapolis,
Minnesota to live with her sister. It is my understanding
that she went to Greece for a visit and died there. Here
sister chose not to bring her back to Middletown to be
buried beside my uncle (I imagine the cost of having her
body shipped back was expensive), so she is buried in Greece
and Uncle Pete is buried at Woodside.
They had no children. Let me know if I can help you both. I
consult with my brother who knew some of the older men, but
I do not know how much he remembers.
My uncle love animals, dogs, cats, parrots, you name it he
had them off and on throughout his life. The parrot you are
referring to was named "Polly" naturally. I remember when
my brother Terry taught to say a few choice words in Greek
and my uncle almost skinned him alive. It was a riot. You
remember Terry he had a tremendous of humor and onery as
ever!
