George N. Revelos
Note: George Manos' real Greek name was Panagiotes Karampas. George Karampas'
father and George Manos were brothers. That's why
George Karampas and George Tsuturas lived with George Manos
when they first came to Middletown. Tsuturas was the son of
George Manos' sister. George Manos' cousins were Katherine,
Mary and Peter Kara from New York City who had shortened
their name from Karampas to Kara. Peter Kara led a Greek
Band and played at several Ahepa conventions. He
played the
accordion.

George Manos 23 Theadore Revelos 35 Theophiles Bizelis 29 Nick D note: I knew that Gus Mardas was from Thrace (my mother always said Saranda Eccleseas) and that he knew Bulgarian, but I did not know he was from Bulgaria. Nick D note: MCD It is difficult to say when Gus Mardas left the Revelos Bros employment. He was at the Revelos store at 1126 Central Ave (Castel Building); he and Theo Revelos (Revelos cousin) were listed as owners in 1926-27, but they probably were managers because the Revelos brothers were listed as owners Gus S Mardae - 1930 Census: 216 Garifield Age: 34 birth year: abt 1896 Birthplace: Greece Relation to Head of House: Spouse's name: Katherine Year of Immigration 1914 Naturalization Proprietor Confectionary Not a vet Katherine Mardae 20 birth year 1910 Birthplace Greece Year of Immigration 1912 Alien Aspasia Mardae 1/12 Gus Mardas & Wm (Bill) Karras - RI Middletown Candy Company / Parrot*1042 Central Ave.1933-1951 * Named changed to Parrot in 1940
In the 1933-34 directory, a new confectionary, the
Middletown Candy Company, appeared at 1042 Central Avenue.
In 1940 the name was changed to the Parrott. I believe that
Gus Mardas and Bill Karas were the original owners starting
in 1933. Although the emphasis was candy, Pete Sarris (Ted
Sarris' father) was the cook. Pete Sarris roomed with us
and I listened to his stories. He and his son had a
restaurant in Franklin that did not make it during the
Depression. They came to Middletown; Gus Mardas gave Pete a
job and the Revelos brothers hired his son Ted.

Nick D. Notes: 11 restaurants--8 owned by Greeks (Chakomakis & Chembaras,Coston Bros, Elles Bros, Likiarthis Bros, Tom Marianos, Nick Bros, James Poulos, and James Zerves) and 3 restaurants owned by locals (Charles Allen, Charles Gays, Nannie Tewart). I also wonder about 209 E. Third on the census report: Speros Turlukes 28 Proprietor Restaurant Pete Mones 27 Proprietor Restaurant Grace Londos 21 Catherine A Londos 5 Mary E Londos 2 If Turlukes and Mones lived downtown, they probably worked at restaurants downtown, but it seems doubtful that they owned a restaurant downtown. |

By the way, I noticed in your Greek Research K, a John Karkaris who worked at the Purity in oxford. John Kardaras of Oxford and a Mr. Minas from Hamilton were partners of that store. They and their families were members of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek church in Middletown. Mr. Kardaras had three daughters, Irene, Harriet and Helen. Helen married and lived in Detroit, Harriet married Judge George Guinaris of Dayton (Deceased, not sure of spelling) and Helen married and lives in Tampa. Mr. Minas had two children, Ann who married Gus Lazares of Hamilton and George who married a non Greek and lived in Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Minas, Ann, her husband and George are all deceased. Mrs. Kardaras died years ago and Mr. Kardaras remarried and lived in Dayton where he passed away. His second wife was from Cincinnati I believe. I can't remember her name and am not sure if she is still living. George Minas operated a Tire store in Hamilton for many years. He died of brain cancer and his wife ran the tire store after his death. Cleo Garvin's brother John Garofalos worked at the Purity when he attended Miami. He had an interesting story on the Purity. Mr. Kardaras and Mr. Minas had a falling out and would not speak to one another. They worked different shifts. One would come in put on his apron and the other would leave with nary a hello. This went on for several years until Mr. Minas or his wife, after he passed away, sold their share to Mr. Kardaras. |
