Otis
Tekakis
Otis K. Tekakis, 84,
passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Middletown Regional
Hospital.
He was born on the Greek island of Crete in the
village of Vathi and served for the Greek National Army. He
came to Middletown in 1937.
Otis was a well-respected
businessman. He was part owner of Lindon's GMC as well as
the owner of several other downtown Middletown investments.
As part owner and manager, Otis is best known for his
leadership at the Liberty Restaurant, which has been a
Middletown landmark since 1925.
For over 60 years he
faithfully prepared the special family recipe of the famous
Liberty Chili, which has now been passed down to the next
generation. The people who know him best are the regular
customers of the restaurant. He was dedicated to his
businesses, but always had time for his family. He was also
an avid golfer, sportsman and gardener.
He was
affectionately known as "Uncle Otis." He was loved and
respected by his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews whom he helped raise and educate.
The closest
to him know he was an honest man who helped anyone in need.
As one of the quiet leaders downtown, he had contributed to
many charities and benevolent endeavors, never seeking
recognition or headlines. His public service organizations
include: honorary member of the Liberty Round Table, Chamber
of Commerce, American Hellenic Educational and Progress
Association (AHEPE) and a lifetime member of the Middletown
Sportman's Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
Constantine and Maria (Georgilas) Tekakis and a sister,
Krystallia (Tekakis) and husband John Pantel.
He is survived
by a sister, Irene (Tekakis) Valen of Middletown; nieces and
nephews, Judge Anthony and Carol Valen of Middletown,
Despina (Valen) and Jim Sakelos of Cincinnati, Irene (Pantel)
and George Cavalaris of Florida, Nick Pantel of Cincinnati,
and Gus and Betty Pantel of Puerto Rico; first cousins,
Eleni (Nikoloudakis) and Aris Kopsidas of Rockville, Md.,
and Chrisanthy (Tekakis) Christie of Miami, Fla.;
greatnieces and greatnephews, Irene (Valen) and Anthony
Zalants of Middletown, Angela (Valen) and Tom Retzios of
Middletown, Connie (Valen) and Tom Hodson of West Chester,
Gus and Kelly Valen of Middletown, John and Kathy Sakelos of

Your Middletown Family document brought to mind the complete
conversation with Christine Thomas a few years ago. We
began with the discussion about "araba" and "arabagi." She
then told me the family Greek name (which I have forgotten
but remember was pure Greek). Christine also said that for
a number of years, her father and her father's brother used
the surname "Tom" while working at Armco. Her father was
Stephen Tom and later became Steve Thomas.
