Edward COMBS, age 92, of
Middletown, passed away Thursday, July 7th, 2011 at Atrium Medical Center. He was born February 17th, 1919 in Mt. Sterling, KY. Ed learned the hardships of life at an early age, losing his mother, father and a sister by the age of 16. As a child of a poor family, he worked a farm with relatives and pulled tobacco with his father. He was fortunate to have relatives who helped raise him and his younger sister. When he was still a young man, he joined the Ohio Volunteer National Guard. And soon after found himself on an army ship going to war. He loved the army, it was the home and structure he needed. He served in the Pacific as Staff Sergeant and experienced, as many other soldiers did, some horrible situations. He nearly died of malaria, which sent him back to the States with an honorable discharge and many honorable medals. Ed retired from Sorg Paper in 1977. He was married to his wife Joyce 44 years and together had one son. As Joyce became ill he nursed her until her death in 1991. Later, he did the same for his sister-in-law and friend, Hazel, until her death in 2007. He loved and was always proud of his two granddaughters and great-granddaughter. They were always in his thoughts and prayers. In the last years, he often said how fortunate he was to have become a Christian. He truly loved Jesus and prayed always for everyone. He was looking forward to Heaven. Ed had many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Everyone everywhere knew him and he truly loved all of them. He was a member of University Baptist Church and Middletown D. A. V. He is now forever at peace in Heaven. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that have taken care of Ed through the years, most recently the nurses at Atrium. A special thanks to nurse Roxanne and therapist Kim for their care and kindness, and to Mary, his special helper. He appreciated ALL of you. He is preceded in death by his parents D. Corsey and Lizel (Isbell) Combs, wife, Joyce Combs, sisters Hazel Combs and Gladys "Boots" Williams. Ed is survived by his son, Edward "Dee" (Vikki) Combs of Middletown, grandchildren, Maria (Dave) Center of Monroe, Marci Combs of Middletown and great-granddaughter, Martina Rogers. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life service will follow on Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Dale Norris officiating. SAVED FROM HORRIBLE DEATH
By Brave Officer McChesney was Little Nora Combs
Nora Combs, the nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Combs, of East Fourth street, met with an accident this morning that may cost her her life and confine the police officer who tried to save her long days of suffering, to his home.
This morning at 9 o’clock, Mary [Nora] Combs, was playing around a fire she had started in her back yard on East Fourth street near Grimes street. The little girls dress caught on fire and before she could put the fire out she found she was all in flames. She ran out the back end of the lot onto Philadelphia street and around on Grimes to Fourth and started for home again. Her clothes in flame, Officer McChesney happened along, he jumped over the fence, grabbing a blanket handed to him over the fence by Mrs. John Doyle, he grabbed the burning child, wrapped the blanket about the child and rolled her on the grass until the flames were extinguished.
The little girl was a sight, her little dress and skirt burned off her body, nothing but the seams of the skirt and the dress and the bands of same. Officer McChesney did noble work and he is receiving praises of all who heard about the affair. But in doing what he did he burned both hands in a serious manner. Mrs. Combs works in the Polar Bear factory and was not at home to help her poor child, but the neighbors did all they could. Dr. Stratton was called and rendered every possible assistance to the girl, while Officer McChesney was taken by Mr. W. C. Crane to the office of the American Tobacco Co., where he was given first aid to his injured and later taken in Mr. Cranes automobile to the office of Dr. G. D. Lummis where the officers badly burned hands were attended to. The little girl is doing as well as could be expected while Officer McChesney is at his home nursing two badly burned hands.

The entire body of the little girl was burned to a crisp. She was the nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Combs, of East Fourth Street.
It is indeed a sad home today when the parents put from their sight forever all that was mortal of their darling baby who on Saturday morning last was the light and joy of a father and mother’s heart and now in this brief space of time she has taken her departure to her eternal home.
The funeral services took place this afternoon at 2:30 from the home. Rev. B. F. McKinnon and Rev. Replogle, officiating. After the services the sad cortege moved to Middletown Cemetery where the little body was tenderly laid to rest.

DISOBEYS MOTHER, GOES TO RIVER; BOY DROWNED
Thaddeus Combs Falls In Miami River Near West Middletown; Companions Look On
Thaddeus Combs

Disobedience to his mother’s warning cost the life of a boy Saturday afternoon when Thaddeus Combs, eight years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Combs, of 1608 Garfield Street, drowned in the Miami River near West Middletown.
The grief-stricken mother, who collapsed when informed that her son’s body was recovered 25 minutes after he sank from view of his swimming companions, told The New-Journal reporter how she had warned him repeatedly against going to the river.
Only Saturday morning she had punished him for attempting to join a group of boys going for a swim in the river, she said. Cautioning him against the danger, she had no thought that he would disobey her later, she said.
Paul and Lloyd Cowgill, 12 and nine years old, respectively, of Baltimore Street, Lester Owens, 11, and Johnny Thorpe, 12, of Garfield Street , were companions of the victim and were at the West Middletown bank of the river when the tragedy occurred at 2 P.M.
Jess Foster, of 815 Maple Avenue, made the report to the police. Officers, Harry Richardson, Albert Carr, Bryan Dineen and Sergeant Marvin Byrd, together with Fire Chief Elmer Reed, Steve McCue and Virgil Combs, firemen, went to the scene of the drowning with the city rescue boat and grapples.
Officer Carr recovered the body a short distance from where the frantic group of boys had seen him sink.
Artificial respiration was of no avail, a physician pronouncing the boy dead when his body was taken from the water.
The boy is survived by his parents, eight sisters, Mrs. Ruby Taylor, Mrs. Lulu Connelly, Sercie, Eunice, Omeda, Geneva, Gladys and Josephine Combs and two brothers, Drefus and Eugene.
Arrangements for the funeral are incomplete.
