Middletown, Butler County, Ohio Andrew Combs, 72, Dies; Resident Here 50 Years Andrew Combs, 72, died at 11:25 p.m. yesterday at his home at 2012 Queen Ave. He had been failing in health 18 years. Before illness forced his retirement, Mr. Combs was employed in the west processing department of Armco Steel Corp. He was a resident of Middletown for 50 years, coming here from Lee Co. Ky. He was a member of the Nazarene Church of God at Trenton. Surviving are his wife, Bessie; five daughters, Mrs. Charles Phillips of Monroe, and Mrs. Willie Combs, Mrs. Clyde Hines, Mrs. James Yancer and Miss Nancy Combs, all of Middletown: five sons, Charles, Clayton, Ray, Donald and Jerry, all of Middletown; two sisters, Mrs. Willie Neal of Dayton and Mrs. William Young of Buckley, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Anita Jean ''Jeanie'' COMBS, age 68 of Hamilton passed away at her home on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 10:35 pm after suffering a long battle with cancer. She was born in Kinston, North Carolina on December 27, 1937 the daughter of Thomas and Retillia (Lester) Waters. Jeanie retired as a specialist in beauty showcases from Avon in Springdale. The majority of her time was spent with her family, whom she dearly loved, and she was well-known for her hospitality, cooking and homemaking skills. Jeanie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Hamilton Ward. She married Raymond N. Combs, Sr. on March 7, 1953 in New Miami. She is survived by her husband, Raymond N. Combs, Sr. of Hamilton; two sons, Thomas Combs and Jeffrey Combs, both of Hamilton; three daughters, Connie Riggs and her husband Darren of Columbus, Georgia, Renee Combs of Trenton, and Toni Combs of Hamilton; sixteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved; two brothers, John Waters of Trenton and Jerry Waters and his wife Shirley of Hamilton; one sister, Janet Peal and her husband Johnnie of New Miami; and many nieces, nephews, and other much-loved relatives too numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ray Combs, Jr., the former host of "Family Feud" in 1996; a grandson, Ryan Woolum; and a brother, Robert Waters. Funeral Service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at 2:00 PM with family friend, Brother Ronnie Riggs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints conducting the service. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff of Vitas Hospice for all their tender care and support. |

October 19, 1938 Middletown Journal, Middletown, Ohio Grocer Dies of Heart Disease Arthur Combs Found Dead Wednesday Morning Arthur Combs, 55, Charles Street grocer, was found dead in bed at 5:30 A.M. Wednesday at his home, 1813 Casper Avenue, a victim of heart disease. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Combs, went to his room to awaken him and found him dead. The business man worked as usual at his store Tuesday, complaining of illness Tuesday night when he was attended by a physician. His death was a surprise to the family and his customers. Before coming to Middletown two years ago, the grocery proprietor was a resident of West Bend, Ky., to which city his body will be removed for burial. He had established a large patronage in the neighborhood of his store and was well known in the district. Surviving him are one sister, Mrs. Ferinda Critchfield, of Indianapolis; one brother, Clinton Combs, of Madison, Ind., and the sister-in-law and nephew, Clarence, who made their home with him. The Rev. Jeff Everman, of Stanton, Ky. will have charge of the funeral. The body will be taken to West Bend at 10. P.M. Wednesday. Arther COMBS, age 74, of Springboro, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Kettering Hospital. He was born in Knott County, Kentucky on April 21, 1930 the son of Billie and Marie (Bolen) Combs. He was employed for 18 years at N.C.R. and at the G.M. Engine Plant as a master tool inspector for 11 years retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge #55 F & AM, an avid Corvette fan, and enjoyed flying airplanes. He also was an avid University of Kentucky fan and was on the 1950 championship basketball team in Hindman, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Lee Combs in 1974. Surviving him is a granddaughter, Sarah Combs Abernathy of Dayton; a son, Charles Hagan Combs of Hindman, Kentucky; brothers and sisters, Ruth Combs of Mousie, Kentucky, Ernajene Martin of Bardstown, Kentucky, Bobbi Sue Conley of Adams County, Nup Allie Fair Cooley of Floyd County, Kentucky, James Bud Combs of Mousie, Kentucky and Susie Conn of Loveland. Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second Street, Franklin with the Reverend Don Clarkson officiating. Bernice W. COMBS Allen, 96, formerly of Hamilton, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2004, in the Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born on Jan. 28, 1908, in Manchester, [Clay County], Ky., the daughter of Marion and Alice (Hoskins) Combs. She received her education in the Kentucky public schools. On June 16, 1928, she married Edwin Kash Allen in Hamilton, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1976. Mrs. Allen joined the First Baptist Church in 1932, and had been a member for 72 years. She was a devoted wife, caring mother, enjoyed gardening, and was a very giving person. She had also been employed by the Champion Paper Co., and the ammunition factory at Kings Mills during World War II. Mrs. Allen is survived by her children: David M. Allen and his wife Brenda of Middletown; Darrell R. Allen and his wife Pennie of Hamilton, Constance S. Taylor of Hamilton, and Edward K. Allen and his wife Marian of Hamilton; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Oscar, Cloyd, and Obel Combs, and a sister, Cleo Rogers. ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Monday, March 29, at the Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at South D Street, with Dennis M. Metzger officiating. Beulah Mae Wilhoit COMBS, age 83, of Middletown, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at her residence. She was born May 4, 1925 in Hardburly, Kentucky the daughter of Robert Tallon and Reva (Lumpkins) Tallon. Beulah was a very spiritual lady and a tremendous mother who never turned down her children for any of their needs. She loved ministering to the sick. She was part founder of the Central Avenue Mission and a very charitable person, a mother to all the folks at the mission. She is survived by four sons, Billy Wayne (wife, Carol) Wilhoit of Dillsboro, Indiana, David (wife, Connie Kay) Wilhoit of Middletown, Kenneth Darrell (wife, Carla Jean) Wilhoit of Middletown, Donald Eugene (wife, Patty) Wilhoit of Middletown; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two brothers, William Gene (wife, Annette) Tallon of Denver, Colorado and Robert (wife, Donna) Tallon of Middletown. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William T. Wilhoit; second husband, David Combs; her parents; and a sister, Dorothy Corya. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home with Pastor Willis Patrick officiating. Visitation will be 5-8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Buddy COMBS, Age 63, of Fairfield, passed away on August 4, 2010. He was born on June 27, 1947 in Hamilton to the late Ballard and Eva (Howard) Combs. He was employed by the Hamilton City School District as a health and physical education instructor for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law: Joyce Shie; and fathers-in-laws: Don Shie and Roger Bennett. He is survived by his wife of 39 years: Lynda Combs; three daughters: Heather (Jack) Sawmiller, Christi (Eric) Merkle, and Cara (Steve) Kerchner; three grandchildren, Jenna and Bree Sawmiller, and Karson Kerchner; sisters-in-law: Nancy Sheerin and Valery Asenjo; cousin: Alma Barger; and many loving nieces, nephews, family members, and dear friends. Buddy was proud of being raised in Hamilton, Ohio. He didn't see East or West side differences. If one had a smile and a kind word, he was ready to be a friend. He enjoyed teaching his students at Buchanan, Grant, Adams, and Hamilton High. He believed that his students should be treated with respect and a sense of humor should be added to each lesson. He was a faithful, fun loving husband to his wife. He was a devoted fan of his daughters and attended all of their activities. He showed unconditional love and pride for his grandchildren. Friends and family may gather to celebrate the life of Buddy Combs on Monday, August 9th at St. Mark's Methodist Church from 5 to 7 PM. |

Charles M. ''Charlie'' COMBS, age 79, of Middletown, died Sunday, December 24, 2006, at Kensington Place. He was born in Middletown, on February 15, 1927 to parents Virgil and Beulah (Stamper) Combs. Mr. Combs served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the VFW #3809 and a 60 year member of the American Legion Post 218. He worked as a realtor for 55 years, most recently with Martin Realty. Charlie played piano at the Manchester Inn dining room. Charlie is survived by his wife, Faye (Howard) Combs; two daughters, Kim Combs and Janie (Randy) Michael, both of Middletown; a son, Chuck (Margie) Gayheart of Franklin; 8 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Paul Combs. Charles Edward COMBS, age 60, of Oxford, passed away at McCullough Hyde Hospital on March 21, 2011. He was born in Richmond, Indiana, on December 5, 1950, the son of the late Robert Bentley and Rhoda Pearl (Payne) Combs. He was a 1969 graduate of Ross High School. On June 9, 1969, in Newport, Kentucky, Charles married Pamela Sue Frank. He was a machinist for Fischer's Special Manufacturing for 36 years. Charles is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Pamela Sue Combs; daughter, Angie (Rob) Jester; son, Joe (Cathy) Combs; two grandchildren, Emily and Thomas; brother, Bill (Bobbi) Combs; and nieces and nephews. Charles was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Combs. Charlie COMBS, age 95 of Middletown, Ohio passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2009 at the Atrium Medical Center. He was born on June 13, 1913 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Bob Woodson and Harriett (Stacy) Combs. On September 15, 1930 he married Ruth Adkins (mother of their 17 children) and she preceded him in death on December 28, 1988 after 58 years of marriage. Charlie retired from Armco Steel in 1974 after serving 20 years. He also attended the Full Gospel Outreach Church in Middletown. He is survived by his wife Delores (Kirby) Combs of 18 years; 17 children; five sons, William R. (Jan) Combs of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Kenneth (Loraine) Combs of Camden, Ohio, James (Sandra) Combs of Las Vegas, Nevada, Tommy (Nancy) Combs of Middletown, and Ronnie (Alberta) Combs of Kissimmee, Florida; twelve daughters, Betty Childers of Middletown, Mildred (Earl) Langford of Carlisle, Ohio, Vivian Gibbs of Middletown, Molly (Gary) Clark of Middletown, Nancy Combs-Adkins of Casselberry, Florida, Peggy Rackley of Middletown, Judy Begley of Middletown, Teresa (Thomas) Hall of Lancaster, Kentucky, Sharon (Gary) Eversole of Middletown, Karen (Robert) Bryant of Middletown, Penny (Joshua) Mullins of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Jenny (Michael) Morford of Middletown; 2 stepchildren, Kenny (Jill) Kirby of Franklin, Ohio and David Kirby of Franklin; two sisters, Ruth (Green) Duff of Franklin, Kathy (Bob) Schwab of Middletown; 68 grandchildren, 146 great grandchildren, 92 great great grandchildren, 3 great great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Combs, age 53, of Dayton, formerly of Hamilton, passed away at the Dayton VA Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. after a short battle with cancer. He was born in London, [Laurel County], Kentucky, on August 7, 1949, the son of Ralph and Emma Inez (DeZarn) Combs. Chester was a veteran of Viet Nam with the United States Navy in 1973. He was employed as a truck driver for 35 years, retiring in 1996. He is survived by two sons, Larry Combs and his wife Kamala of Dayton and Kevin Combs of Cincinnati; one daughter, Cheryl Angel and her husband Fred of Hamilton; one brother, Donald Combs of Burnside, Kentucky; three sisters, Nancy Lipscomb and her husband David of Charleston, South Carolina, Crysta Dunda and her husband John and Edna DeConzo, both of King, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Bethany, Alexandria, Katelynn, Andrew and Paige; and four special friends, Joe Barrett, Lester Strong, Charlie Sizemore and Robert Rhodes. Clarence "Don" COMBS, age 79, of Middletown, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009 at his residence. He was born May 28, 1929 in Middletown, OH to Harlan and Juanita (Hammond) Combs. He served our country during the Korean War with an honorable discharge. Don was a crane operator in the Hot Strip and then a cable splicer in the Rigger Shop at A/K Steel retiring in 1986. After his retirement from A/K he worked for Sears and Lowe's. Don was a member of Grace Baptist Church where he loved being with his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Don is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pam" Combs of 58 years; children, Rebecca (Stephen) Poludniak, Donna (Jay) Miller, Dani (Derek) Brockwell and Donald W. "Pete" (Amber) Combs; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church. January 30, 2006 Journal News, Hamilton, Ohio Haney Combs DEES, age 95 of Hamilton passes away on Sunday January 29, 2006 in the Butler County Care Facility. Haney was born on June 1, 1910 in Breathitt County, Kentucky the daughter of the late Hiram and Eliza (Gross) Combs. She married Walter Dees, Sr. on March 6, 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1979. She had been a member of the Church of The Nazarene. Mrs. Dees is survived by her children Walter Dees, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Athens, Alabama; Nelson C. Dees and his wife Karen of Hamilton, Ohio. Eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren also survive. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Crystal Hacker, a grandson Nelson Dees, Jr., and four brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held at The Webb Noonan Funeral Home 240 Ross Avenue at south "D" Street on Thursday February 2, 2006 at 10:00am with Rev. David Hargrave officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. |

Funeral services will be held from the residence at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon and interment in charge of J. D. Riggs in Middletown Cemetery. |

to her family, her church, and her Lord Jesus Christ. Helen enjoyed
gardening, quilting and was a great cook. Helen is survived by three
daughters, Phyllis (Amor) Steffen of Lake Forest, CA, Sondra (John)
Esselman of Middletown, and Terry (Oscar) Avina of Middletown; seven
grandchildren, Christian (Amy) Steffen, John Allen (Jenny) Esselman,
Aaron Esselman, Jason (Emma) Esselman, Travis Esselman, Christy (Mike)
Forsyth, and Kelly Shepherd; 13 great grandchildren; brother, Oatley
Parks of Middletown; and sister Gean Parks of Oceanside, CA. She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, General Sercy Combs in
1995; a daughter, Brenda Faye Combs; grandson, Chuck Ricketts; and
sisters, Jewel Paisley and Sarah Lou Parks. Funeral Service will be

December 7, 1938 Middletown Journal, Middletown, Ohio INSURANCE AGENT DIES OF PNEUMONIA John Combs Suffers Attack After Operation John Combs Pneumonia following an operation caused the death of John C. Combs, 46, of 1008 First Avenue and removal of a popular agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The end came at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Middletown Hospital where he underwent an operation last week for a ruptured gastric ulcer. It was believed he was improved and would survive the operation when pneumonia developed. For seven years, Mr. Combs had been the insurance company’s representative in the East Central Avenue and Upper Arlington districts having been its prize agent for two years, when he led the Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana territory. Prior to going into the insurance business, he had been an employee of the American Rolling Mill Company for 20 years. He is a native of Jackson, Ky., but lived for a time in Noctor, Ky., where his parents now reside. Other survivors are the widow, Mrs. Randa Combs; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Spencer and Mrs. Mable Smith of Noctor, Ky.; seven brothers, Henry of Middletown, Thomas, Asher, Robert and Ova, of Akron, O., Hagar and Samuel of Noctor, Ky. The Rev. W. H. Thompson, pastor of First Church of Christ, of which he was a member, and Dr. Carroll Lewis, pastor of First Methodist Church will be officiates at the funeral home at 7:30 P.M. Thursday, at the McCoy Funeral Home. The body will be sent to Noctor, Ky., Friday morning for funeral rites and burial there Friday afternoon. |

He was born May 28, 1949 in Hamilton the son of the late James and Mae (nee Pennington) Combs. Larry was a graduate of Lee University and obtained his Master's Degree from Miami University. He taught in the Hamilton City Schools and at the Lebanon Correctional Institution. He was an accomplished musician and songwriter and had made music his career. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; one son, Jamie Combs; two grandchildren, Zoe and Tori; one sister, Mary Jo (Spencer) Doty, who was Larry's principle caregiver during his illness; two brothers, Robert R. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Ann Trigg of Kettering, Ohio; a son, Steve (wife, Marie) Gibson of Burlington, Kentucky; sisters, Maudie of St. Cloud, Florida, Mary of Litt Carr, Kentucky, Marcia of Cincinnati, and Mavis of Mallie, Kentucky; a brother Jack of Haines, Florida; five grandchildren, Cathy, Gregory, Shane, Mindy, and Aaron; and four great grandchildren. Her late husband was an employee of Inland Container before the war. She is survived by her mother and father, four brothers, Ralph, Robert, Raymond, and Stephen and two sisters, Kathleen and Juanita. Friends may call at the residence after 9 a.m. Saturday. Raymond Neil COMBS SR.,age 76, a lifelong resident of Hamilton, passed away at Ft. Hamilton Hospital on Monday, February 1, 2010. He was born in Hamilton on December 23, 1933 the son of Obal H. and Lillie E. (Hensley) Combs. Ray was a veteran of the Korean Conflict with the United States Air Force. He was employed as a supervisor at Champion Paper Company until he took a management position at Avon Products, Springdale, Ohio, where he was a member of the Founding Fathers. On March 7, 1953 he married the love of his life, Anita Jean Waters who preceded him in death in 2006. Ray was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and offered housing to missionaries of the Mormon faith. He was an elected official of the Central Committee of the Butler County Republican Party and involved with the Boys and Girls Club of America. Ray was a very proud resident of Hamilton; active in community sports, including Babe Ruth baseball and basketball; and a member of Eagles Lodge #407. Ray was a very loving man who was known for his sense of humor, love of animals, and never met a stranger. His generosity and heart of gold will go unmatched. He is survived by five children, Connie (Darren) Riggs of Columbus, Georgia, Steve Combs of Hamilton, Jeff Combs of Hamilton, Renee Combs of Trenton, and Toni Combs of Hamilton; one brother, Frank Combs of Florida; one sister, Alice Hartmann of West Chester; sixteen grandchildren, Kelly Flesher, Whitney Fragoso, Kirby Combs, Cody Combs, Chelsey Combs, Ray Combs III, Caitlyn Riggs, Brandon Riggs, Cassy Taggart, John Norris, Tori Kelch, Damon Kelch, Christy Combs, Erin Lawhun, Steve Combs Jr., and Jennifer Combs; eighteen great-grandchildren; and his two loving cats, that gave him great joy and happiness, Jr. and Panther. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Raymond N. Combs Jr., the former host of Family Feud, in 1996; his grandson, Ryan Woolum in 1988; two brothers, Kenneth and Marvin Combs; and two sisters, Agnes Whitis and Shirley Simpson. Visitation will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Friday, February 5, 2010 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on Saturday at 2:00 PM with Brother Ronnie Riggs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the ICU staff at Ft. Hamilton Hospital; Dr. Richard Sternberg; devoted caregivers, Tina Perry and Donna Cassidy; and Elders Argyle, Smith and Lancaster, for all their care and support. |

Journal, Middletown, Ohio YOUNG WIFE DIES Rose F. Combs A young life was shortened last night by the death of Mrs. Rose F. Combs, wife of Elza Combs, at the residence, 695 Woodlawn Avenue. The passing of this young wife and mother is indeed a matter of keen regret to her friends by whom she was considered an ideal helpmate and an inspiration in the home. She was 22 years old and had been ill many weeks before death. Surviving her besides the husband and two little children, aged 2 and 3 years, are her parents, whose arrival from Index, Ky., is awaited to complete arrangements for the funeral. |

Middletown, Ohio Ruby Wells, 88 of Middletown, Ohio passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at her residence. She was born August 29, 1918 in Wolfe County, Kentucky to Bill and Mary Combs. Ruby was a seamstress at Worthmore Clothing, G.E. Greathouse Clothing and J.C. Penny. She was a member of Breiel Blvd. Church of God; was an avid quilter for family members. Loved to read and enjoyed traveling internationally. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband John Wells in 1999; parents; sisters, Evelyn Propps and Eula Miller; brothers, Fred Combs and Ike Combs. Ruby is survived by daughters, Salley (Jon) Christensen of San Diego, CA and Rita (Bob) Pierce of Monroe, OH; grandchildren, Cynthia (Jay) D'Ambrosio of San Diego, CA, Eric Christensen of San Diego, CA, Michael (Holly) Pierce of Middletown, OH and John (April) Pierce of Middletown, OH; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Natalie, Christopher and Alexander; sister, Beulah Chandler of Middletown, OH; brother, Will (Ival) Combs of Middletown, OH; sister-in-law, Lillian Combs of Middletown, OH and several nieces and nephews.
