June 21, 1884 Middletown
Signal, Middletown, Ohio
John Hilt
The death of John Hilt, only son of Capt. Joseph Hilt, after many
months of suffering, occurred at the family residence on East Third
street last Monday morning, June 16th, 1884. The deceased
had been fully aware for a long time that death was surely approaching,
and while the love and affection of parents and sisters and the skill
and attention of an excellent physician, were doing all that could be
done by human hearts and hands to prolong his existence, he told them
that he was going to die, and that he did not fear death. Previous to
the fatal hour, he told those nearest and dearest to him on earth, that
all was well with him, and retaining his senses up to the last minute of
life, he bade them all good bye, and while a smile of hope and joy
overspread his countenance, he quietly fell asleep to awake no more
until the great judgment day. The funeral took place on Wednesday at 3
o’clock, and was largely attended; friends and relatives from Dayton and
Franklin being among those of our own town and vicinity, who assembled
at the late home of the deceased to express their sympathy and regret.
Rev. T .H. Hench of Connersville, Ind., formerly pastor of the
Presbyterian Church, of Middletown, preached the funeral sermon, being
assisted in the other exercises by Revs. Elliott and Ince, of this
place. After the services, the remains were conveyed to the cemetery and
gently lowered to their last earthly resting place.
vcm: John Hilt was buried at the Middletown
Cemetery, then in 1930 his body was moved to Woodside Cemetery with
other family members. |
