Middletown Signal, Middletown, Ohio C. L. V. Schlobig was a resident of this township and a quiet, inoffensive young man. Excerpt from column next to the above “Heno” news- “VAL SCHLOBIG, THE MURDERED MAN, Is the only son of Mr. Wm. Schlobig and old and highly respected farmer of Brown’s run. He was in his twenty-second year, and highly esteemed by all who knew him. “SONNY” JACKSON, THE MURDERER, Is the son of Hugh Jackson. He is twenty-one years old, and when drinking is considered a hard customer. When sober he seems to have self respect and behaves well. JOHN FLAGHERTY, who has been arrested as an accomplice, is the son of James Flagherty, a hard working man and a good citizen. Like Jackson when he leaves whiskey along he is a clever young man, but when he gets to drinking he is a terror to the community. The remains of Schlobig were followed to the grave by a very large number of friends. As they passed through our city the cries of his poor old mother, who is nearing her grave with consumption, would have softened the hardest heart. Young man, have you ever considered what caused all this trouble. Think of it! Whiskey did it all! Whiskey killed this man, who was an honor to the community. Whiskey has sent sorrow to the hearts and homes of these young men who are surrounded with heavy iron bars. Whiskey has brought this poor old heart-broken mother to the new made grave of her only beloved son.” vcm: Clement L. V. Schlobig was buried September 28, 1884 at the Middletown Cemetery |
