MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
A Two Year Old Child Falls Into A Cistern,
And Is Saved From Death In An Unique Manner
A two year-old child named Chas. Boyd, grandson of Mrs.
Peter Coffman of South Broadway, had a thrilling experience yesterday
evening, and a miraculous escape from death.
The child, with it's mother, Lulu Boyd, lives with Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Coffman, the latter being Miss Boyd's mother while Mr. Coffman is her
step-father. In the kitchen a cistern is built with a covering that works
on a hinge, the child's mother had the cover raised in order that she
could put the buckets containing milk and butter in the water of the
cistern. While thus engaged, the infant unnoticed approached the mother
from behind, and when near the opening stumbled and fell into the water
headfirst. The cries of the frightened mother and grandmother, could be
heard some distance and all was excitement for the time being. The cistern
was seven feet deep, nearly full of water, and unless something was
quickly done the child would be drowned.
Mr. Coffman, with great presence of mind, suspended himself in the water,
holding to the side of the frame of the cistern, and with his feet he
caught the child and held it, then carefully drew himself from the cistern
and the child was saved. When taken from the water it was unconscious, the
work of resuscitation was begun and in a short time it regained
consciousness.

IN A BUMBLE BEE'S NEST
George Anderson, a farmer of Union township, while driving his
team through a pasture Saturday, ran into a bumble bee's nest. The animals
stopped and began kicking at the pesky individuals. Anderson left
the wagon and took one of the animals by the bridle bit to lead them away,
in its kicking it struck Anderson in the face with its front foot,
knocking him over. The team then started and with the wagon passed over
the unfortunate man. He sustained some very bad bruises. |
