1860 Agricultural Census—Oliver Township (Partial)

Census records are in the public domain, and may not be copyrighted regardless of the year of enumeration. Copyright is intended to protect original creative works and not 'sweat of the brow' labor. Though I 'labored' to produce this transcription, I do not believe it is copyrightable. But just to be absolutely clear, I hereby grant this transcription to the public domain. You are free to do with it what you will, with out restriction or reservation, but you may not exclude other people from exercising these same rights.

Please read carefully:

Column headings in the original included information such as 'bushels,' 'lbs.' or 'Value of...' For instance, column 48 is not the number of animals slaughtered, but the value of the animals slaughtered. The key provides the correct units and headings as they exist in the census. Click on the column number to find an exact heading within the key. NB: The 's' in the Molasses column (#44) means "Sorghum."

Names appear in the agricultural and population censuses in the same order, so it is usually possible by comparing the two schedules to discern additional information about the property and people involved. For instance, if the total real estate value in the population schedule is larger than the value in the agricultural schedule, that usually means the individual owned additional land in the county. Sometimes individuals are listed on farms in the population schedule who don't appear in the agricultural schedule. This might mean that they were renting, and it is sometimes possible, by comparing schedules, to determin from whom they were renting. In this schedule you will find individuals with farms of zero acres and zero value. I am not sure what this means but I have made enquiries and will post an explanation if one is forthcoming.
