Cuyahoga County was formed in 1808 from Geauga County, which in turn had been formed only two years earlier from Trumbull County. Just seven years later, in 1815, a portion was removed from Cuyahoga, along with a portion of Portage County, to become Huron County. In 1822, Lorain County was formed from parts of Cuyahoga, Huron and Medina Counties. The final loss of part of Cuyahoga County was in 1840 when a portion was joined with part of Geauga County to form Lake County.
