Meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month (no meetings August and December) at the St. John United Church of Christ on the Defiance College Campus, 950 Webster St., Defiance. Richard Rozevink, local war historian and collector, will speak about his recent research on Lt. James Wiley, a local veteran of the Mexican War from 1846-1848. is program is entitled "Editor, Hero and War Correspondent".
February 26 JoAnne Barton, Ralph and Karen Hahn of Defiance will present "Antique Road Show-Defiance Style". They will tell the origin, history and value of each member's family heirlooms. Bring in two of your favorite family heirlooms to learn more about them and find out if they are worth lots of money!
March 26 Sam Schmitz, Celina, Ohio, will speak about the German records that can be found at the LDS Family History Library. He has been a volunteer at the LDS Center for over nine years and has a vast knowledge of the records available there.
April 23 Janett Calland, Post Clinton, Ohio, will present an interesting program
about the surprising role that women played during the Civil War. She is busy with numerous speaking engagements sharing her knowledge of the Civil War and as an officer in the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic.
May 21 Rhonda Casler, of the Defiance County Record Center, will give members and guests a private tour of the Records Center. She will take some of the mystery out of the different types of law records available for genealogy research.
June 25 Mary Scranton, one of our Society board members will share helpful hints
that would help anyone plan a genealogy trip to a foreign country. She recently traveled
to Hungary and researched her Hungarian heritage. Internet resourses will be given.
July 23 Richard Powell, Department Chair of Engineering Technology at Northwest State Community College, will present a program that reinforces the interesting Iinks between history and your genealogy research. In 2005 his article "Genealogy and History" was published in the OGS News family history month issue.
August 27 Grant and Linda Loy, of Columbia City, Indiana, will present an interesting program about the Revolutionary War titled "Continental Soldier and Wife". They will display their collection of authentic uniforms and artifacts that they have collected.
September 24 Dwane Grace, Lima, OH, is a Trustee of the Ohio Genealogical Society. He will present a helpful research program, "Church Records: Do I need them, How do I find them''
October 22 Annual First Families and Members Banquet. Reverend Dale Kern" the
Black Swamp Storyteller, will portray George Winter, who was a pioneer painter of the Pottawatomie and Miami Indians in Northwest Ohio. Pastor Kern will amaze and delight everyone with his voice inflections, facial expressions, body movements and authentic attire.
November 26 Bill Grimes, Educational Director of the Defiance County Soil and Conservation Department, will portray everyone's favorite nurseryman, Johnny Appleseed.
