For the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 we are adding Veterans of the War that served at Fort Winchester in 1812 / 1813. The New site heading is:
War of 1812 - 1st Rifle Regiment Kentucky Militia
War of 1812 - During the period of 1812 / 1813 numerous Kentucky Militia Regiments were stationed at Fort Winchester or passed through our area on their way to take part in the following battles: Battle River Raisin - Michigan, the Siege of Fort Meigs - Northwestern Ohio and the Battle of Thames in Canada. You can find many of those soldiers listed in our Veteran's Data Base. Access to that site may be gained by clicking on its heading listed within our site. It is our way of honoring their service and sacrifice in the Old Northwest.
.
1st Rifle Regiment, Kentucky Militia - A group of local historians have formed a living history unit in order to preserve and portray the history of the 1812 Fort Winchester and the soldiers that served there. The group has chosen to honor the memory of the soldiers from Woodford County, Kentucky that served in Captain Virgil McCracken's Company. His Company was stationed in our area for several months prior to the Battle of River Raisin, January 22, 1813. Their defeat and massacre at the hands of the British and their Indian Allies became a rallying cry {"Remember the River Raisin"} that lead to the victory at the Battle of Thames in Canada, October 5th, 1813.
