Elihu Underwood (17 Jan 1878)2

At Dunkirk Friday night about half-past ten, during a driving snow storm, the engineer of a passing freight train discovered a man lying on the track at that place, but not in time to stop the train, and; he was run over and cut in two. His name was Elihu Underwood, and was seen intoxicated during the eving. The Corner’s jury exonerated the railroad company.1

Explosion (8 Jul 1880)1

The explosion occurred on the Herrick farm which was located about two miles east of Dunkirk.

Hardin-co. July 6—Six men were killed and three injured when a boiler on a threshing outfit exploded on the farm of Capt. Herrick, three and half miles west of Forest. The outfit which belonged to William Herrick, Jr., exploded about 3 p. m. Killed were Richard Case, Washington Pisel and Emerson Harmon of Forest, William Frederick, Sr., Jesse Frederick and Rudy Thrush. Injured were George Pisell, Henry Bowers and John McVitty. According to Eilleen Thrush, a railroad conductor saw the accident and stopped to see if he could help.

Rudy is buried in Patterson Cemetery but there are no markers on his grave nor on the grave of Mary Wise. The markers are there, however, for 4 of their children, David, George, Hattie and Henry.

Accident (8 Jul 1880)3

Fearful Accident--On Thursday last, at a place two miles east of Dunkirk, the boiler of a steam thresher blew up, killing five persons and wounding four more. The boiler was a new one, manufactured at the Eaton, N.Y., and the cause of its explosion is not known.

Some of the bodies were literally town to pieces, fragments of them being thown in every direction.4

--The marshall of Dunkirk, Hardin county, Wm. Shuey, was killed by three men whom he stopped on the street, on Friday morning last. He was watching for some parties, about 2 a.m. on that morning, and seeing three men coming down the street hasted them, and when he got up to them they resisted arrest, and one of them shot him through the neck. He lived about two hours after he was shot. The men robbed him of his pistol, money and a pair of handcuffs and left. Going into the country they stole a horse and buggy, and since then nothing has been seen of them though a thorough search has been made. Officers are still on the outlook.3

--The Melanchton Light Guards packed their knap sacks and started for Dunkirk Monday, where they went into camp for six days.5

The Melanchton Light Guards was a National Guard unit, Co. C, 2nd O.V.I. mustered into the regular army during the war with Spain.

Ownie Owens was probably working for the Lima Republican when he decided to go to work for the Dunkirk Standard, "Ownie Owens, a reporter for the Republican, resigned and moved to the Dunkirk Standard." 1 He still had a desire to be involved with Lima’s newspaper because he was involved of later purchasing the newspaper, "Among the many mentioned reported buyers for the Lima Daily Republican are Lou Ashton of the Spencerville Journal and Ownie Owens of the Dunkirk Standard." 2

D.H. Edgar (c1890)2

irst Mayor, 1890.

The first mayor was David H. Edgar. he was born in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, September 8, 1800. With his father, Joseph Edgar, he migrated to Holmes Co., Ohio in 1814. After his parents died he migrated to Section 18, in Blanchard Twp., Hardin Co., Ohio. He was the mayor for two years following the incorporation of the town.1

S.K. and the Sheriff (1890)3

There must have been a confrontation betweein S.K. Moore, of Dunkirk and Urve Jaycox. Moore had Jaycox arrested for assult with intent to kill. Mr. Moore had received a severe cut on the head from a beer glass thrown by Jaycox.4

Guy Kingsbuhy [sic] is the editor of of the Standard.1 On January 9, he, and other were injured when one Pennsylvania R.R. train rear-ended another during a snowstorm in Ada, Ohio. Three were killed.2

Maud B. Kingsbury was the wife of Guy M. Kingsbury who was a printer in Dunkirk. Maud was born in February, 1879; Guy in March, 1871. Their daughter, Grace G. Kingsbury was born in July, 1899. All were born in Ohio. They lived at 252 Patterson street, Dunkirk in 1900.

Management of the Dunkirk Standard, weekly newspaper of Dunkirk, this week reverted to the owner, Mrs. Maud Kingsbury Arnold, after having been published for five years by R.B. and K.B. Jaqueth, of Forest.1
