EACHERS (1873-1902)
Mr. _ Kingsbury taught in the Dunkirk schools for the school years 1894-95 and 1895-96. Listed for the school years 1896-97 and 1897-98 was Guy Kingsbury who may be the same individual.
No records exist about the first school in Dunkirk, but the pioneer living around 1900 all agreed that Moses Louthan taught the first school, that the first school was built in 1854 at the location of the M.E. Church (c1901). At the time of the author’s book the building had been converted into a dwelling and was owned by a Mrs. Mary Rinkard. Mary was originally from Hagerstown, Pennsylvania where she was born on April 1, 1834. She died in Lima on July 28, 1920. At the time she was a widow.
The teachers who are believed to be teachers in that building were: Miss Lahlia Lillibridge, John Morrison, Kate Woods, Moilie Wilcox, Tom. Morrison, Mr. Brown, W.J. Kingsbury, and Mr. [Thomas?] Larimer.
On December 2, 1864, Wm. McGinnis & Wm. Edgar, home on furlough from the Civil War and friends of Larimer, were starting out to hunt. School had been dismissed at noon so they stopped by the school and were showing him the manual of arms. McGinnis’ gun struck a seat, discharged, and killed Larimer instantly. Mr. J.J. Wood finished the school term.
The school district was organized in 1866 and a four-room brick building built in 1867. Mr. M. Friedly was the first superintendent of the shcool. Shortly thereafter three additional frame building were built to support a new population growth in the district.
ew Building
In 1883 a new building was designed; 76x86' , three stories, with a basement. The building was to heated with hot air, total cost $21,670. No records prior to 1883 have been preserved. Since that time the following have been members of the School Board:

There was a memorable fight during organization in 1894. D.C. Smith and J.S. Hedrick were both candidates for clerk. One hundred ballots were taken with no election being won by either candidate. They each received three votes at every ballot cast. When a motion to adjourn was first presented it lost. A darkhorse was also presented but that also failed. After forty-four more ballots were taken without either winning they did adjourn. At the next meeting Smith withdrew his name and the deadlock was raised.
