Pre 1920 Girls City Team 3
Looking Back. 1

The "Happy Six" was the name of the 1920-21 Forest City girls basketball team because there were only six members of the squad: Ethel (King) Schott (holding ball), Mary (Latham) Fruen, Thelma (Campbell) Burk, Minni (Spoon) Peart, Anna (McClain) Bonnell and Pearl (Fishburn) Wenner.2 That year the team played several games in the Kenton Armory against the Kenton City Reds. Both girls and boys rules were used and Mrs. Burk, owner of the photo, remembers the playing got pretty rough at times. The team traveled to its games in a seven passenger car owned by Mack Fishburn, brother of Pearl. Home games were played in the ballroom of the old hotel located west of the Old Tower and Depot.

This Girls Basketball4 photographis a group of 10 girls. The assumption is that they represent the Forest Village girls basketball team, but it hasn't been verified. There is no date, but the assumption is c1920s. On a Post-It attached to the reverse is, "Am pretty sure one on right in back is Frances (West) Cramer."

In no particular order are the following individuals of the Girls Basketball League Champions of 1939-40;Grace Hougendobler, Violet Garver, Helen Forney, Helen Long, Loraine Chaney, Dorothy Chaney, Anabel Shafer, Margaret Switzer, Betty Burk, Mary M. Anderson, Ruth Musgrave, Ruthanna Snider, Betty Lou Crum, Patsy Henderson, Mary Elizabeth Simpson, and Ruth Larimore.

2 Pearl (Fishburn) Wenner graduated in the Class of 1915 supporting the fact that this team played for the Village and not the high school.
3A close comparison of this photograph and the Girls Basketball - pre 1920 Girls City Team would lend one to believe that the individual sitting on the left end of the pre 1920 photograph would be Ethel (King) Schcott.

Girls Basketball Team (1925-26)

Though Robert Lehman is not found in any of the photographs above, he is seen here holding onto a basketball. He was about 7 years old in the photograph. Besides basketball, Bob was quite a sportsman, playing baseball, football, and wrestling. He started playing baseball in school and was involved in it the remainder of his life. Bob died in 1991. Some of his children also had the sports "bug".

Norma Lehman (left)
Jack Lehman (right)

Years later, his daughter, Norma Lehman, would keep basketball scores for her school and her brother, Jack Lehman, was a football manager and quite the baseball player. Norma was also a good ping pong player. Sports just seemed to come naturally for the family.
