Original School, c1904

riginal School.

The first school house was erected in 1870 and was located where Lucille Swindler's & Dale DeVeml's homes were located c2005. The school house was erected in 1870 and was located where Lucille Swindler's and Dale DeVeml's homes were in 2005. The building to the right of the school was sold to W.K. Vogel for $16,700. It was then moved across the street and used as the Vogel Blacksmith Shop and later the Corbin Garage. The coal house, which is not visible, was sold to J.D. Wickiser for $2,400. The porch, which is also not visible, was sold to to D.W. Sickiser for $250.

econd School.

The second school, destroyed by fire in 1928, stood west of the original building of 1905 and was under the superintendency of A.O. Suber. Here the photographer was looking southeast while the photographer was standing on the east side of the building. In the photograph the students & faculty of 1915-1916 are to the extreme left.

West of the original school and under the superintendency of A.O. Suber, the second school was erected. Superintendant Suber was married to Mary Ellen (Blackburn) Suber (b. Wyandot Co., OH, 26 Aug 1872 d. Upper Sandusky, OH 2 Mar 1941).

A fire destroyed the second school in June, 1928. On the back of the photograph of the second school is written, Miss Mary England.

Second School After the Fire.

The second school which was destroyed by fire in June of 1928. This is a photograph of the second school after a fire in June. The Wharton schools merged with the Forest schools in the early 1960s creating the Riverdale School District. The merge closed the higher grades in both Wharton and Forest moving them into a new building on SR37 north of Forest and west of Wharton.

latt Sisters.

A postcard to Carrie Blatt (b. 1901, OH), Oakharbor, Ohio from Hazel Blatt (b. ) dated 19 Sep 1918 and post marked Wharton, OH. Carrie changed the wording from "We" to "I" for her sister. Alice Blatt (b. 1904, OH) is referenced. Hazel asks about Carrie's schooling and indicates to her that she was a teacher, probably in Wharton.

 

Carrie, Hazel, and Alice were the daughters of August (b. 1872, Germany) and Lucy Blatt (b. 1872, OH) of Carroll Twp., Oak Harbor, Ohio. August was a farmer living next to his farmer brother, Fred (b. 1877, Germany) and his wife Martha (b. 1886, OH). August also had a son, August J. (b. 1906, OH). Fred and Martha had three sons; Fred (b. 1906, OH), Frank (b. 1909, OH), and Clarence (b. 1916, OH). They also had four daughters; Ethel (b. 1910, OH), Elsie (b. 1912, OH), Erma (b. 1913, OH), and Esther (b. 1920, OH).

.B. Zalauf.

Z.B. Zalauf was the principal at Wharton schools until he took the same job in Ridgeville, Ohio,1 but no reference can be found about this individual. His given name appears on no census from 1880 until 1920 under this surname.
