My recent trip to Zanesville, Youngstown and Columbus provided half the answers to my family history questions. I was only in Youngstown one afternoon, but it was extremely productive. The Mahoning County Courthouse Vital Statistics Office had the birth certificates for Jacob Milutinovich b. 8/7/1917 and Albert Milutinovich b. 12/14/1922. Parents are George MILUTINOVICH and Mary BENCI. The spelling of Mary's maiden name changes through the years as follows: 1917- BENCI; 1918 - BENCAR; 1922 - BENCE.

On Jacob's birth certificate there was the unexpected bonus of detailed birthplace for the parents. George MILUTINOVICH was born Asstria City Kalvan [Kal_au] Hung and Mary BENCI was born Asstria City Abany [Abauj] Gagjalso Hung. George changes his nationality thru the years to Jugoslavian then Serbian, but Mary is Magyar always.

I have been told that Mary BENCI's best friend had the same name. I assumed that her first name was Mary, but to my surprise the midwife who signed the Certificate of Birth for Jacob was also Mari Benci. When Albert was born in 1922 I beleive she was married, and signed that certificate Mary TARNCHU (or Tarndiu or Tamclui). I recall someone was searching for information on this midwife. If you are still out there, please email me. I have unidentified photos and portraits.

The Ohio Historical Society and Archives in Columbus is a family historians dream. The collection of City Directories alone is worth the trip. But what amazed me was the surname card catalog. Those unindexed books are not a problem - the Society indexed them in a card catalog. An added advantage is you may find your ancestor in a book you would not have checked. Thank you Ohio!

Using their death index I found that Jack (Jacob) MILUTINOVICH died 9/24/1918, and got a copy of the certificate for a quarter. There was one child born after Jacob but I can find no record of the birth or death. When Albert was born he was the only living child. I could find no record of Albert's death, nor could I find the birth of William. Still need obits, but time ran out.

William is in the Youngstown city directory at his parents address in 1941 and 1944. I am told he married Ella or Ellie, but did not have enough time to verify that. More work to do...

The Ohio 1920 Census Soundex helped me find the MILUTINOVICH family in a snap, which leads to G-Uncle Steve (I did not know his name before). And hopefully that will lead to my lost cousins.

The Ohio branch of my family are 20th century immigrants to the USA. But I never thought much about how difficult a journey my 18th century immigrants had just to go from the Ohio river to Columbus. As we passed each hill, only to find another waiting, I imagined walking those hills one after the other...

Thank you Franklin County List! I love Columbus! What a beautiful city so full of history, yet modern and FRIENDLY!

Relatively,
Pat Green

Hi. Just thought I'd check back again since there might be new people in the forum. I've thought that my greatgrandfather, James DITTY, was married to Nancy COLEGROVE, but some sources tell me that he was married to her sister, Sarah. I know there were Colegroves and Dittys in Ohio, and wonder if anyone out there might know how to straighten this out. I think they were probably married in KY before coming to OH some time after 1870. All are in the KY 1870 census living near each other. The girls were only 13 and 10 at the time, and James was 22. I'd appreciate any help. I know there is a Colegrove family history book which says he was married to Sarah, but I think it is in error. Thanks. Nancy (another reason I think he was married to Nancy is because I'm named after her!)

I recently found that my line goes back to Lehr GRACE and Sarah JONES. They had a son, Ferdinand Lehr GRACE (1842-1924) , who married Amanda HART (1843-1928).

Histories of Hilliard and Norwick Twp. mention several families which came to that area in the early 1800's from Virginia. These include BRUNK, BRITTON, LAIR. They also mention a Rev. Isaac GRACE who came from Virginia in 1808. There seems to have been a lot of inter-marriage among these families, and various legal documents often have these names together.

I would be interested in corresponding with anyone on the list that has links to these lines.

I am looking for information on Walter Willis FOSTER, born October 1, 1882. I would like to know the names of his parents and/or siblings and their dates of birth. I know that he married Emma MINER(OR) and there were three children from that union. I would also like to know anything about Carl FOSTER if there is any information out there about him. The other two children are Helen and Ida (my mother). I have really hit a brick wall with this family and would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Thanks
