I am looking for Wintston T. THOMAS. Born in 1813 in Bedford Co. Virgina. Found him in the Jackson Co. WV 1850 census which lists his age.(that is how I came up with 1813) His first wife was supposedly Mary who was deceased. In 1847 he married Permelia WESTFALL (in jackson ca wv?). His children were Marietta (1844), Parthenia B. (1848), Levi (1849). Child also Joel Braxton Thomas (1835). This family was not listed in the 1860 census for Jackson County. Someone says Levi Thomas was found in Youngstown census with father listed as Winston. I have not been able to verify this yet and know little else. Any help would be appreciated. This is very inportant to my grandmother.

Thanks again for the address, and I will send you a letter today. If you have time again (sorry, but I just got info about this yesterday), I need also a death certificate for Mary Peterseim (1844-1914) (I think it is the Mary PETERSEIMER listed on the Index on the Ohio Historical Society's Wesite, who died in 1914), as I would like to see who signed it.
If you are able later, also check Census Records for 1860, and 1870 in Allen County, for Martin Petersein (It mightbe spelled different than that), and see if it lists any children.
Thanks for all the work you can do, as I only get to Columbus once in awhile, every year.

Researching subject lines for my wife. Since she was adopted at a very early age, and born in ElPaso, TX, no birth certificate has been obtained to date, our effort has been tedious, but we were able to obtain her sisters b-cert from Akron in 1944, (they were adopted together) and it listed mother as Ada Marie GROSS, born in New Lexington, (Perry County)OH. We were able to get her b-cert also, dated May 23, 1927 in Saltlick. This document lists Father as Jesse GROSS, age 28, occupation miner and born in Ohio. Mother was listed as Elizabeth Jane COX, age 33, housewife and born in England. My wife's father was listed as Harold Ray HALL from Somerset, KY, but I noted that there is also a Somerset in Perry County and thought since the mother was very young (16) at the time, she might have miscommunicated his place of birth. Does anyone out there have any information about any of these families or people? Any information at all would mean so much to her and her two sisters.
Thank you, Bill King

Am seeking any help finding information on Thomas SAUNDERS and wife Mary CLARK SAUNDERS. They are the parents of my Grandmother Rosabelle SAUNDERS WITHAM. Rosabelle was born (so the story goes) in Petersburg, Jackson Co., Ohio, May 8, 1890. Well I posted a query in Jackson Co., Ohio and anyone who read or knows about the Co. must think me a bit daffy. I find that Petersburg is in Mahoning Co., Ohio; just a tad off! The story of my grandmother goes, when she was 3/4 yrs old, she along with a sister and brother? were put in an adoption home. Rosabelle's mother had died and her father, Thomas was sent to prison for stealing in order to feed his children. The children never heard from him again. First, I know that Rosabelle was not born in Jackson Co. as I sent for her birth records, none found, unless it was because she was put up for adoption.??
I need to find out what prisons were around Mahoning Co., Ohio. Where would one find records on who was in prison at that time and when they were released?
Can anyone help me with this puzzling family? Thank You in advance, Laura

Hi Maggie. Hope you're feeling better. I was wondering if you could help me solve a problem. I have two sources of information that show my gg-grandfather as different people.
My g-Grandfather, Marion Loraine (sp?) RUGGLES was born 12 Jul 1856 in Akron OH (family bible record recorded late - could be wrong). His father (one source says) is Lorain Ruggles b. 17 Jun 1823 in Copley, Summit, Ohio. There was a book written about Lorain as a spy for the Union army. I purchased the book and the date for Lorain's marriage is after the civil war. So 1856 can't be right or Lorain can't be Marion's father. Lorain m. Annie Rollins from Mississippi. Lorain's father is Alfred (lived in Copley); Alfred's father is Ashbel. Marion was married in ND where he went for a donated land claim.
Do you have any information on Marion and/or Lorain Ruggles? (any Ruggles info would be helpful)

Dear Maggie, First of all, this is the most professional, and beautiful site I have found so far.
I am looking for the parents of Robert MOOR, born in Adams County, OH, in 1825. He may have a brother, John MOOR, age 21. His parents are from Scotland. They may be on the 1840 Ohio Census, as they didn't come to Illinois until 1850.
My other favorite brothers are Eli MELVIN, born in 1823, in Fayette County, Ohio, Union Twp. Or, perhaps it's Union County, Fayette Twp. His brother, Merryweather MELVIN, was born in 1825 in KY....They married sisters; Martha Ann HUKILL and Margaret Elizabeth HUKILL. I was able to find Eli's and Elizabeth HUKILL, MELVIN's marriage license in Washington Court House, Ohio. (md.10 Sep,1846). They had several children, while living there..Adaline Myers MELVIN, my 3rd grt grndmother, born 4 Nov,1848, Fayette County. I know the parents of the HUKILL girls, but cannot find the parents of Eli, Merryweather and another brother, Joseph. Adaline name one of her sons, Aaron, so I believe Eli's father may have been Aaron MELVIN. Also, the MELVINS are related to a Jehu Jefferson MELVIN, but I'm not sure what the connection is.....
Any bit of help that you might find will be appreciated beyond words. I sure hope there is some info there.......Thanks, again and Regards, Judy Goodwin

Dear Maggie,
I looked at your research work and the webpage. It is great. I am a teacher of Special Education in Australia. I am researching my ancestors from Springfield, Ohio. They were Roman Catholics and I specially want to know about my gggrandfather whose name must be mentioned at the death certificate of Ellen Lyons died on 25.1.1890. Also ggrandfather Daniel LYONS known as the blind broom maker, and his brother Michael Lyons owned property and land. I am sure they would have their father's name mentioned in the deed. Please do help me with some information from the archives, library, land deeds or the census records.I shall be ever so grateful to you. With best wishes, Esther Lyons
My gggrandmother,Ellen Lyons born 1803, Cork Ireland, died 25.1.1890 Springfield, Ohio, came out to USA during the height of the Potato Famine from Ireland, and settled down at Gallaghar Street, Springfield, Ohio, with her two sons:
(1) Daniel Lyons, born 1825, Cork, Ireland, on 3.8.1851 married Catherine Leonard (born 1830 Clare County, Ireland, died 26.5.1873 Ohio)
(2) Michael Lyons, born 1828, Cork, Ireland (died 30.3.1886 Ohio) and married Mary Ryan, Ohio
Daughters:
(3) Johana Lyons, born 1829, Cork, Ireland(died 3.8.1861 Ohio) and married Morgan Kennedy, Ohio
(4) Catherine Lyons, born 1835, Cork, Ireland and married James Hurley, Ohio on 15.2.1854.
They were all Roman Catholics.
Daniel Lyons, the blind broom maker,(my great grandfather), and Catherine Leonard (Flatery) had the following children:
(1) John Lyons born 1852 Springfield Ohio (2) Daniel Lyons born 1854, Springfield Ohio. He published a dictionary in New York. Was the editor for Collier's Magazine. (3) Mary Lyons born 1858 (4) Jeremiah "Jerry" Nicholas, born 1858 (5) Timothy Lyons born 1860 (6) Ellen Lyons born 1862 (7) Michael Patrick Lyons born 1864(my grandfather) Married Bertha Ida DeLisle daughter of Francois Benvienu, Justice of Peace and State Legislator of Delray, later Detroit.
I am searching for any relatives of the above to get in touch with me. Also I want to find out who was the husband of my gggrandmother Ellen Lyons born 1803 in Cork Ireland? and why he did not join his family to USA during the potato famine. I hope to hear from someone from the Lyons families living in Springfield, Ohio who may be related to the above, or who would be kind enough to LOOK UP for me at the archives, library or the census records.
Thanks Esther Mary Lyons from DOWN UNDER, Australia

Would you check for any death certificates (I know they weren't required yet} in that county for 1860 or 1870? I believe they are the parents of Elia and Merryweather MELVIN, brothers, who went to Illinois after marrying sisters, Martha Ann HUKILL and Margaret Elizabeth HUKILL. I was fortunate to find their marriage licenses in Washington Court House, OH. Any tidbit of information would be helpful at this point.

Maggie, I live in Maine and have never been to Ohio, however, it is a place I intend to visit someday. However, I am in the middle of a great mystery, and am unable to proceed further down the family tree until this particular family is located.
My great great aunt Althea died a couple years ago at the age of 107. Before dying I received a few handwritten letters by either herself and or her mother. My story begins with Althea. She is the sister of my great grandfather John TURNER. He died in 1921 of diabetes, so Althea was our source of info. Althea was born in 1887 in Nebraska. Her father Rufus Turner was born I believe in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Rufus' parents were Alba C. Turner and Harriet Tilson. Rufus married Mathilda Ann Bower on 8 nov 1883 in what may have been Belle Vernon, Ohio. Mathilda was the only child of Samuel Bower and Mary Hill. I have a picture of Mary and Mathilda. Mathilda was born on 4 Jan 1859. I know that Samuel enlisted into the 66 Ohio Regt. around 1861 and deserted in 1862. (Folklore had it that Samuel died in the Battle of Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing...anyway, Mathilda died thinking her father was a civil war casualty). Something tells me he deserted because Mary died leaving Mathilda alone. However, Samuel didn't apparently stay around long, because Mathilda moved in with Mary's father aptly named Grandfather Hill and an aunt until she was 6 years old (1865). For some unknown reason, she then went to live with a Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bare of Belle Vernon, Ohio and stayed there until she married Rufus Turner. I know there were Turners in these counties...I have a clipping of a Samuel Bower born in Montgomery County, Ohio on 2 Jan 1819 a son of Samuel Bower and Elizabeth Emerick. (Sam and Elizabeth had 9 children...Jacob, Catherine, Elizabeth, John, William, Samuel, Jr., George, Mary m. and Sarah). This Samuel Jr. married a woman by the name of Harriet Rape.I also have a handwritten copy of a death of Elijah Bower born near Findlay, Ohio Wyandot County, born in 1838/1839. He married a Mary Jane Moberly on 24 June in Iowa having moved to Iowa in 1849 when he was 11.
These could easily be red herrings, and thus set me in several wrong directions, however, I can't help but wonder if there isn't some connection. I know I am looking for a needle in a haystack, but I do believe the information is out there somewhere.
I hope I have giving you enough information to at least research the BOWER, HILL relationship.
Thank you in advance for your wonderful service... Teri Dover Bremen, Maine 207-529-5121

I am looking for information on ALL Faubles starting in the 1800's for Oh. Names, Dates, Events. The Faubles were early settlers to the Ohio, and came from Md., & Pa. They all came from large families, and therefore are all interconnected (somehow). I have found them in Wayne Cnty, Summit Cnty, & Medina County. I am especially trying to place my great great grandmother. Her name was Catherine E. Fauble, b. 1843/1844 in Oh. Married Tothawaugh Sythoff in 1/1875 in Summit County, Oh. On her death certificate from the State of Michigan, it is listed that her father's name was John. But I don't find her in the John Fauble family which is reflected on the 1860 Hinckley Twnship, Medina County, Oh census. I believe that Catherine may be related to William & Samantha Fauble who appear on the Summit Cnty, Oh 1880 census. I and several other's are researching the Fauble surname, we share information, so if I receive any information, if it doesn't fit with my Catherine, I definately pass it on. We think that he came from western PA in about 1839-1840 but are not sure. On 1850 census he is shown with three children, one of which is John who is my wife's great grandfather.
As far as we can determine or guess we think that he was born in and around Erie about 1815-1816. We do not know when he came to Ohio.

1. SAMUEL1 JOHNSON. He married MARY HALL.
Children of SAMUEL JOHNSON and MARY HALL are: 2. i. WILLIAM D.2 JOHNSON, b. December 19, 1800, Sussex Co., N.J.; d. September 4, 1866. ii. 2. JOHNSON. iii. 3. JOHNSON. iv. 4. JOHNSON. v. 5. JOHNSON. vi. 6. JOHNSON. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM D.2 JOHNSON (SAMUEL1) was born December 19, 1800 in Sussex Co., N.J., and died September 4, 1866. He married MARTHA SHACKLETON Abt. 1821. Notes for WILLIAM D. JOHNSON: William D. remained an intimate of his father's household until he was 20 years of age, having in the meantime recieved a good common-school education in the district schools. At the age named he settled on a portion of his father's farm, which he cultivated until 1834. On the 12th day of May 1834, Mr Johnson started for the undeveloped west with two teams, containing his family (which at that time consisted of his wife and six children) and such household effects as were portable under the circumstances. They came by way of Pittsburgh, through Pennsylvania and through the Ohio Valley to Indianapollis, Ind, from The latter city to this state, crossing the Illinois River at Havana, and going thence to Canton, Fulton County. Arriving at the latter place Mr. Johnson concluded it was a good agricultural country and determined to make it his abiding place. He consequently purchashed a 240 acre tract, moved his family and at once engaged actively and energetically upon its cultivation and improvment, with the determination at that time of making it a permanent home. He lived on that farm for some 21 years erecting thereon a fine residence and a substantial barn and other necessary outbuildings, set out fruit and ornamental trees and otherwise improved the land, and by a subsequent purchase increased his landed interests in that county to 400 acres. In 1857 he purchased 320 acres in Henderson Co., and during that year came to Kirkwood, purchased ground and erected the fine residence upon which has been his home ever since.
Mr. JOHNSON was an earnest supporter of the principles advocated by the Republican party. His religious views coincided with the tenets of the Baptist Church to which denomination he belonged. He has held many offices of trust within the gifts of the people of his township, and now, as he lingers in the shadows of life, he can look back over the history of the past with satisfaction, and live in the enjoyment of the peace and piety which a life of active industry has brought him.
The marriage of Mr Johnson took place in 1821 to Martha SHACKLETON, a native of Mew Jersey. They had 7 children, and 23 grand-children Mrs Johnson died April 14, 1871.
copied from an article in a Kirkwood Newspaper. From notes obtained by Brian T. Mahoney:

BOOTH. I believe he was a Methodist minister. The children were Charles, Francis, John, Anna, Elsie, Flora and Miriam. I know all the children went to OWU at some point during the early 1900s because I have receipts from there for them. I do not know my Great-grandmother's name, but do have papers from 1877 from OWU for a Flora McGuire and wonder if she might be my great-grandmother. My grandfather was John Hamline. He married Mary Catherine Purkey and I think she may have come from Delaware. I think my grandfather was a teacher at one time since I have old photos of him in a class room in Delaware and also with the Delaware basketball team in 1911-14. If anyone knows of these people I would appreciate any leads. I am going to Western Reserve with our local North Hills (Pittsburgh, PA) Genealogy group on May 2 to try to start my research. There is some discussion and question among family about William being a doctor, and we would like to find out for sure if he was. Do you know of any way such as information with an organization in Ohio that could give us information to find out whether grandpa was a doctor? We have several nurses in our family that could really relate to this part of our family if he was actually a doctor!!! Thank you for all your help, and for the free lookup!!

I am interested in the information you have on TECUMSEH the great warrior and his families. I have read just about everything offered in reading material, relating to him...
I am interested in who all his brother's and sister's married, and what names they took, as Englishmen...and whatever became of Tecumseh's son/s or children......
I remember reading about the Galloways in the books on Tecumseh...I believe the girl he fell truly in love with was Rebecca Galloway? (If I'm not mistaken, of her first name) I and all my relatives, we handed down the story of my maiden/surname of MATTESON.....
There are many Matteson's, but none we can connect with, except for my first and second cousins....
My grandfather Matteson, used to tell all of us children that we were descendents of Tecumseh the Indian, and had indian blood....in us, but shouldn't be told, and then he'd start the story of the Trail of Tears..how the gov't pushed the indians westward, and if they knew we had indian blood in us, they might move us all over again, sometime....
I have a hard time not believing his story, as if you'd see pictures of my father and all of his brothers, and their father, and pics of his father, you can definately tell there is Indian blood there somewhere. All of them have the dark hair, and the red skin tone, and brown easily in the sun. They also have the very high cheekbones..I found one picture, of one of the Shawnee Cheifs, from OK, and he is the spitten image of my grandfather, my dad's dad...to this day, by dad and his brother's are all elderly, and they still have red cheeks...
I've traced my dad's family back to his greatgrandfather, William T. Matteson....."T" standing for "Tecumseh"..now I've understood, that there were many men in those days, who were given the middle name of "Tecumseh" but did they have the story behind it. During my research, I've not been able to find William T's parents..William died in Pike Co., IN and was buried in the Arnold Cemetery,(his wife's family cemetery)..he has two stones, one reg. headstone, and then he also has a military stone..His wife was Sarah Jane Arnold, her family came up to IN thru KY....I have her families line already traced, by another family member....but Matteson seems to be having a brick wall....
My grandfather, was very determined for us children to know this information, and when I talked to many of the older family members, they remembered that...these would've been his nephews and neices....I'd asked them where they'd heard this information from and they had said their parents, who would have been my grandfather's brother's and sisters. They mentioned that this information came from their grandfather, so this information almost has to be true...
Are you familiar with what Tecumseh's child/children's names are..where they went to after the Battle of Fallen Timbers' or Trail of Tears? Do you know the name of his sister's (Starwatcher)husband, or their children...Wasn't he supposed to be a furtrader? I'm sure they had children? Are you familiar with the Draper Manuscript? or the WaldomOldom Book, both of them are supposed to have personal information in them about Tecumseh and his family.....
Any information you can give me about his family would be of help..... I'd done some research on Tecumseh, obviously, and in one of the books written about him he was supposed to have married a woman named Mattice....that's who his son was supposed to have had as a mother....and if I'm not mistaken she was supposed to have been a little crazy(forgive me for the term, but wasn't sure of the term to use, as this is what was used in the book I read) but I had a theory, and some people think I'm a little touched in the head also, but my theory was......you know how indians and some foreigners named their children, so they can be identified many years down the road....they link names together, so their recognizable....so my theory was.....MATTICE+TECUMSEH=MATTESON.....MAT=MAT.....TE=TE.....SON=the son of Mattice and Tecumseh.... I'm not sure if I can get it any plainer....I think it's a pretty good theory!!
Since I've hit a brick wall, but the years really don't add up, unless I can find his families descendents, then it might all fit together........... I talked with author James Alexander Thom's wife....she is supposed to be a descendent of one of his family member's....and she gave me the run down...but don't see where she can be right....I've also talked with the Shawnee nation's and they don't think I'm right either, but he had many brother's and sister's....and they all didn't go to the reservations... I don't know how they know that we're not....also knowing human nature, and you can't be blind, but that doesn't mean that Tecumseh didn't also have affairs on the side...now how true all of this is, I don't know....but in one book, it was telling when Tecumseh, would come to a meeting of peace, he would be offered a woman for the night, to make him feel comfortable....and we also know how, and not meaning to be offensive to one race or any thing...but we American's know history, and the indians behavior, how they had also raped and kidnapped women and children....sometimes they got away, and sometimes they didn't.....and many of them had indian babies......true??? I feel bad to have to remember history that way....but that's what history says, please don't take offense..I personally don't have anything against their way of life, if that's what they choose, but this is history, and how true history is, it's only a degree, but that's also what we've been taught, be it right or wrong...truth or false.......
Well, if you have anything I can use, please let me know....... Melanie Wayman nwayman@viaduct.custom.net
