I wish to trace the descendants of my father's sister, Louisa Annie RIGGS, who was born in the latter part of 1885 in Plymouth, England. She emigrated to the USA and is believed to have settled in Ohio. I do not know if she ever married.

I do not know when she emigrated but it is unlikely to have been during the First World War (1914-18) and the family spoke of it as a past event in the 1930's. So on the basis of this rather flimsy evidence I suspect it would have happened between 1905 and 1914 or during the 1920's.

I shall be grateful if anyone can supply me with information or suggest where I should make further enquires.

Seeking information about MILLER's, KIRKENDOLL's, POWER's from Ross and Allen County's in Ohio.

JOHN MILLER married a MATILDA JANE POWERS bef 1840... He supposedly shot a man before 1840 also. Then moved to Illinois, where he changed his name to KIRKENDOLL. The Kirkendoll name came from John's mother's maiden name.

Does anyone have any information about this. If so, please contact me.

I have been looking for my g g g g grandfather, who was an early settler in Ohio, His last name was KIMBLE, but I do not know his first name. But here is what I do know

His children were Aaron, Nathan and Moses, and Aaron was born in New Jersey in 1803 and Nathan in 1805.

His wife might have been named Martha ROSE.

He immigrated from New Jersey to Pennsylvania and then to Ohio.

Aaron and Nathan are listed in the Fayette County, Ohio Census for 1830. Nathan is listed in the Union Twp Fayette County Ohio census for 1850.

Nathan, who stayed in Fayette County, named his first two children William and Martha, and I suspect this could be the names of his parents.

I found a William Kimble who served in the War of 1812 from Ross or Pickaway.

Do you have any census records for 1810 or 1820 that have the children Nathan, Aaron, and Moses listed?

I have looked for a long time but have not been able to solves this mystery!

If you could just watch for me, I would REALLY appreciate it!
Thanks,

Your site is wonderful, and you have many resourses of Ohio listed. It sounds like you know Ohio History really well, so I felt that you might be able to help me get around this brick wall. I want to verify my records given to me by long passed on relatives. I am new at this, but I have exhausted every avenue I can find. I have looked in every co. in Ohio beginning with Logan, as that one is where I was told my great grandmother was born.

I am trying to find any Ohio records for Sarah Experience WOLF (E): b 6 July 1863 m 5 dec 1883 in OH. > TN after marriage to Albert O. McCLELLAND b 4 april 1854 in OH.

Sarah is the d/o Simeon Peter WOLF (e) b 6 nov 1835, PA (?) and Lyndia Jane NORTON b 1837. Simeon is the s/o John Wolf (e) b 1786: and Susan (Susannah) Newman. I found a John Wolfe in Tuscarawas co. Ohio, but not sure if this is the same John Wolf(e).

Albert O McClelland is the s/o Andrew McClelland b 1810;;: the s/o James and Jane, Craig, McClelland who purchased land in Ohio .

I need to know the correct county so I can order her birth records or marriage certificate/records. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the family of Cornelius and Rosannah (maiden name GALLAAGHER) MAHAFFEY. They are identified In the 1850 for Wilkesville, Vinton County and the1860 census for Milton Township. They were both born in Ireland and originlly settled in PA. All children except Jerome were born in PA. He was born in Ohio.

They had 8 children:
James A Mahaffey, born 7-4-1836, died 6-6-1906
Patrick Mahaffey, born about 1830 (found living with his brother Jerome in 1850 Vinton County census.
Mary Mahaffey, born about 1834 (found living with parents in Vinton County in 1850 but not found in 1860.
John Mahaffey, born about 1840 (found living with famiy in Milton in Township in 1860)
Charles Mahaffey, born about 1841 was found with family in Milton Township, in 1860
Thomas Mahaffey, born about 1846, was found in 1900 census in Jackson Countu, Milton Township, living with his wife Elizabeth and child whose name can't made out from census data
Elizabeth Mahaffey, born in about 1848 was living with parents in Milton Township in 1860.
Jerome Mahaffey, born in aoubt 1853 was living with his brother Thomas in Jackson County, Milton Township in 1900, with his wife Elizabeth and a child whose name I can't read from the census.

The only data I have on this family is census data, except for the family of James A. Mahaffey. That family line has been research quite a bit in my family. However, I have no idea what happened to some of the other family members, who they married, any children, etc.

I am also interested in a couple of things related to James's family. All of James's children were born in Ohio In particular, I am looking for info the following children of James A. and his wife Jane Buck: William, born 6-10-1868; Jerome, born 1-9-1874 and dying 7-31-1960;
Benjamin, born 11-10-1881, dying in 1937; Eloises (born 7-26-1876,dying July 1899, listed as "Logia" in 1880 census for Wilkesvile, Vinton County.

Also, Cornelius and Rosannah were said to have been buried in St Mary's Cemetery in Wilkseville. That cemetery has been run down and all markers and records of their buried lost. Would love to have info on their death and burial.

Hello: I am trying to find Gregory RAPP in the US population census. I under- stand that there are indexes available for Ohio that include the head of household. I found him in the 1900 Census but could not find him in 1870 or 1880. He was located at Pennsylvania Ave., Franklin County, Ohio, Montgomery TWP. His death certificate showed last 1916 address as 601 Pennsylvania Ave., Columbus, Ohio. What I'm trying to do is link this Gregory RAPP with my grandmother who was born in 1863 or 64 and who's name was Ellen Mary RAPP or Mary Ellen RAPP. Her mother was not Anna RAPP. Her mother died in 1865 or 66 and was Ellie Kimey (Keime) or maybe Marion. I scanned the census microfilm for 1870 and 1880 for the soundex code for RAPP but didn't find anything but I may have missed Gregory RAPP or he may not have been indexed.

Thanks in advance.

On the 1870 census I found John LEEPER, age 11, living with a family named SPIKER. On the 1880 census I found John LEEPER, age 21 still with the SPIKER family in Harrison County, Stock Township. In 1881 John H. Leeper b1859 married Mary E, Kent, b1860 and they lived in Stock Township, on Grimes Road.

Benjamin BASOR 1790-1799 PA (Henry D. Basor - Brick wall)

This name appears on World Family Tree Vol. 12

My family of Basor came from PA, but we do not know which county. If someone could look this up maybe it will tell me where in PA to look.

Our grgr grandfather, Henry D. Basor married Catherine Elizabeth Guysinger, she was b about 1806, Pa. The were m abt 1825. Don't know if it was in OH or PA, because am not sure about the date they arrived in OH. They were in Stark, Medina, Lorain and Wood Co. OH. She died Aug 1886 in Wood Co. They had children, John, Fred, Betsy, Mariah, Henry W., Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Aaron, and Edwin. Her name could have been Elizabeth Catherine. On one obituary found her referred to as Betty, but tombstone says Catherine. In my search for more info abt her I found a Henry Guysinger age 80 and a Catherine age 70 with a son Henry 42, in Stark Co. census in 1860. Thought they could be related to Catherine Elizabeth, maybe even her parents, since they were in Stark Co. OH and the Basor's had been there. Found a Joseph Gisinger in Wayne Co. in 1830, but could not connect these two to my Catherine. Have a little more info on this name but will wait and see if any of the above is relevant to you.

To give you an idea of how hard I tried on this, Crown Hill Cem. is the 4th largest in the U.S. with 555 acres. I did find the graves I was looking for and was disappointed on the death information. Here's what I need: Death certificates for August FERGER and his wife Margaret Ferger. The stones gave death dates as 1940 for both. I also have other information that gives 7-7-1942 or 4-1-1940 for August Ferger and 7-7-1942 or 7-1940 for Margaret Ferger. I think they may have been in an accident to have died so close together. Even though they are buried in Indianapolis, I believe they died in Ohio. That's where they lived for quite some time. I appreciate your efforts on this!

Carter's marriage date as 29 Jan, 1862 in Franklin County, Ohio. In The History of Union County Ohio, he is listed as a deacon in the Rush Creek Christian or Deciple Church. It was organized in 1865. T.W. Bridge was also listed as a subsequent Elder. My Husbands ancestor is Eugenia Bridges was born 20 June 1866 in either Union, Marion or Franklin Counties. In 1870, E.P. Bridges and his wife Martha C. were in Bowling Green twp. in Marion Co. Ohio. (page 153), F.H.L. film #05522739. According to this census Martha was born in Virginia. She was 27, as of July 1870. Emory was 35 and born in Ohio. The children, Emery H. was 6, Eugenia was 4, Martha was 1 and Mary E. Bridges was 3 months? According to the I.G.I. she was born 23 Mar 1870. All children were born in Ohio. Also on the I.G.I. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Family History Center, they list a Robert C. born 13 June 1872 (Bowling Green, pg. 92)) and an Ella May, born 28 Dec. 1874 at Bowling Green, Marion Co. (pg 132) Another record I found says 25 Dec, 1874. Emery died Dec 1879. Martha remarried a Timothy P. Joneson the 10 th or 11 th(Del and Union Co. mrg. index by Margaret Bouic).) of April 1880 in Union Co. Ohio. Martha is on the June, 1880 census in Jackson twp, Union Co. Ohio. The children listed on this census were Emery 16, Eugenia, 14, Contention or Cor?, (who I believe is Martha on the other census) is 11, Mary is 10, Robert is 8, Elly M (ay) is 5, Justice or Justin Bridges is 2.There is a hired hand also by the name of W.H. Ather? Most of this information was obtained from Ellen Headington of Kenton, Ohio. She is a member of the Hardin County Historical Society, where our ancestor, Eugenia Bridges, who married Phineas Jones 9 or 7 Sept.1880 in Union Co. and where she had probably two of her three sons still living by the 1900 census. Dale is descended through Grover Cleveland Jones, but she also had a William A. Jones and a Dana V or U. Jones and two other children by 1900. Danas obituary says he was born 18 Dec, 1882 in Hardin Co and that his middle initial was U. Grover was born in Feb 3, 1887 or 1888, Montgomery, Marion Co. Ohio. (Info from Phyllis Jones M)According to Williams obituary he was born Mar 24 th 1890 in Marion Co. Ohio. I have Eugenia Bridges, Jones, with her new husband of four years, Lafayette Stoddard, on the 1900 census in Hardin Co. Ohio, in Lynn Twp. This lists Dana as Delbert, and lists Grover as being born in 1887. This census says that Eugenia was born in W. Virginia. They also have a 4 year old boarder living with them by the name of Ova or Ora E. Patty anf Mary Stoddard, age 86. Willisams Social Security and death index printout says his birth date was 26 Mar 1890, and that he died in Jan 1971. in Tice Lee Florida. His obituary says he was of Fort Myers, Fl. The two other husbands listed for Eugenia in the Family Bible, held by Mary Jones Draper of Michigan, listed a Mr. Van Overberg and a Mr Reinke. A cousin, Phyllis Jones M. found a Marcel Vanoverberg in the family Cemetary in Grant, Michigan, Parkview Cemetary. Eugenia lived to be 85 years old. According to her obituary, she had been a resident of Ensley, Newago Co. Mich. for 25 years. Her obit was in the 19 Aug, 1951, vol 53 of the Grant Herald. Grover Cleveland Jones and his first wife Ida Francis Ingram are on the 1920 census with my husbands father , Roy E. Jones and their other children, Richard, Mary, Ellien. They were both Assembly of God Preachers. Any help in furthering our Jones or Bridges genealogy would be greatly appreciated.

Maggie; I am trying very hard to find out some info on one of my ancestors, but with little luck. Perhaps you or someone from OH can help. What I have is:

LEMON(D), Thomas E., b. 1812 in OH, he was a farmer. Married a Jane ??, b. 1831 in OH. This is all I know of them. They had at least one child that I am pretty sure of. This is Elmira, b. 1865 in Randolph Co., IL, married to Thomas W. Williams. I found a listing in the 1870 IL Census for Randolph Co., that listed a Thomas E. Lemon, age 58, OH, farmer along with Jane, age 40 from OH, Charles James (could not read it for sure), age 8 from IL, Elmira, age 6 from IL and George age 10/12 from IL.

This is it.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I hope this is not too long but I had to share it on my DEAD END. A couple of weeks ago I was going from my mothers in KY thru Portsmouth on the way to Columbus, Ohio to the OGS awards ceremony. I had some extra time and decided to stop at their public library and check their local history section. The lady (what a sweetheart) working there asked me if she could help me and I faschiously said yes tell me about my John Nail. In a couple of minutes she brought a book of Common Plea extracts and I could barely believe my eyes as I read the following:

Scioto Co Common Pleas book G page 248
Mary Nail
vs
Jacob Nail

Pleas before the Court of Common Pleas within and for the County of Scioto and State of Ohio on the Fourteenth day of November in the month of our lord One Thousand and Eight Hundred and Fifty Nine, Scioto County 88

Be it remembered in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty Nine Mary Nail filed in the Clerks office of our Court of Common Pleas this said petition against Jacob Nail et al which said petitioner is in the words and figures following to wit.

Petition:
To the Court of Common Pleas with in and for the County of Scioto and State of Ohio. Your petitioner Mary Nail of the County of Jackson and State of Ohio respectfully represents that on or about the 5" day of September on 1808 she was married to one John Nail Senior of the County of Shenandoah, State of Virginia and that the said John Nail departed this life on or about the 1st day of May AD 1856 at the Township of Bloom in the said County of Bloom in the said County of Scioto where he then resided and where his principal messuage was situated leaving your petitioner his widow and Jacob Nail, Joseph Nail, John Nail, Wesley Nail, Joshua Nail, Sara Robinson, Maria Robinson heirs of Michael Robinson, Mary Robinson (formerly Mary Nail) now deceased, Sarah Green (formerly Sarah Nail) now intermaried with one James Kelly and John Nail both of the latter being heirs of William Nail deceased as his heirs at Law and entitled to the next immediate estate of inherentance in the lands and tennants hereinafter mentioned.

Your petitioner further expects that the said John Nail, her late husband during correspondence with your petitioner and at his decease was seized as an Estate of Inherantance of the following Real Estate Lands and tennants situate in the Township of Bloom in said County of Scioto and described as being the South West Quarter of the South West Quarter of Section No ten (10) in Township four (4) of baufe nineteen (19) in the District of Lands heretofore subject to sale at Clillicothe, Ohio containing 40 acres more or less in which said foregoing described tract of land & other tennants attached belonging your petitioner is entitled to Dower according to the statute in such case made and provided and that your petitioner has full right to call for an assignment of the dower in said premises according to law. Your petitioner further requests that the said Jacob Nail, John Nail, Mary Jane Kelly, James Kelly and residents of Jackson County, Ohio that the said John Nail Heir of William Nail deceased, Joseph Nail, Wesley Nail, Joshua Nail, Sarah Green, George Green and residents of said Scioto County of that the residence of the said Michael Robinson and Sarah Robinson, Maria Robinson Heirs of Michael Robinson, Mary Robinson deceased are to your petitioner wholly unknown.

What a wealth of information on my John Nail. I have been thru Portsmouth dozens of times and never stoped there so don't overlook anything to look at. I wish I could give the lady at the library a big hug for what she found in two minutes. If anybody can connect to this I would love to hear from them. Keep digging and don't give up.

Ethel Mae LINGLE, b. 19 Jan 1882 in Michigan? (but Michigan cannot locate her birth certificate). Her parents were:

Paul U. Lingle, b. 9 Aug 1841 in Ohio, d. 2 Feb 1902 in Denver, CO
Mary Elizabeth Wells, b ca. 1842 in Ohio, d. 13 Mar 1920 in Denver, CO

Paul's parents were:

John Lingle, b. ca. 1820 in [something with about six letters, starting with P] Sarah MILLER (or MULLER or even FULLER - death certificate virtually illegible)

Mary Elizabeth's parents were:

William WELLS, born in Ohio (presumably ca. 1820)
No information on mother.

Ethel had an older sister Dora L., b. 30 Aug 1872, unknown location. The family moved to Denver about 1897, where they remained. Does anyone recognize any of these names? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fred Bishop and Helen Martha Miller in Logan County

I just found the letter I recieved back from The Historical Society. I did send to the Priobate Court in Logan County. They passed it on to the Historical Society. It says that they searched marriage records from 1899 to 1920 and found nothing. I just got to wondering if they mean they searched ALL records or just in Logan County...? And yes...therein lies my problem...it could have been in any surrounding county. If you have the time and energy when you get up that way I would appreciate a lookup....but if not no problem. I have waited this long...eventually Grandma will reveal herself! ;o) I've been trying to distract myself with my other lines while I wait for my microfilm to come in at the library. I sent for the Bellefontaine Examiner from the years they would have been there...hopefully something will come through!

Thank you for your quick response...... Maggie MacNeill

Seek coontact with those with surname LARKINs, in Fayette, Clinton, Greene Co, Oh, and surrounding areas in 1800's.

My GGF, Enoch W. SLUSHER (Va born 1860 - died 1914 in Fayette Co, Ohio), was married to my GGM, Esther A LARKINS, from abt 1891 to at least 1908 (dates of childrens births). Enoch's death certificate indicates that they were divorced at the time of his 1914 death. At least one of their children, Otis (my GF- b 1894) was born in Fayette County.

Have established GF Otis' paternal SLUSHER/SCHLOSSER line back to and into Va, Pa and several generations into Germany and can't find info on my GGM Esther A LARKINS in Ohio, late 1800's/early 1900's????

Know not her dated/place of birth, date/place of their marriage, date/place of their divorce, date place of her death and know "zero" re her parents, siblings, etc.

Soooooo, anyone with Ohio LARKINs in their line or hanging on one of their "branches", please contact me!

Many Thanks, Otis in Florida

They were last "seen" as girls "at home" in Clinton Co in an 1882 Clinton Co, Ohio, Beer's article. Their parents, my GGGF George William SLUSHER (Hardy Co, Va born 1838) and GGGM. Susan Cathrine JUDY SLUSHER (Pendleton Co, Va, born 1841), "escaped" the Civil War in Virgina with two "baby" sons (GGF Enoch and George) and moved to Ohio abt 1863. Living first in Greene Co and then moving to Clinton Co in abt 1866.

Have seen info suggesting that a Mrs _____ SLUSHER DODD (b abt 1876 - died in Greene Co on 12/18/1961), (widowed?) wife of a Lester DODD (who aparently preceeded her in death?), may well have been a daughter of George and Susan SLUSHER. If so, est dob suggests it just may have been Melcena???

Any info/links re these two Ohio SLUSHER sisters or Lester DODD appreciated.

Hi Maggie,

I am still hitting bedrock while trying to dig into the families past. Even Mary Oliver at Wright State University in Dayton was unable to trace my GGGrandfather:

Andrew Jackson ANADOWN b. in December 1832 - Dayton, Ohio
Married Phoebe Van Fleet on September 3, 1853 (possibly in Columbus since that was her home)
Name changed to ANDERSON by the Ohio State Legislature sometime during the 1860's
Two sons both born in Dayton: Thomas Henry Anderson b. March 3, 1855 and William Martin b. in 1857, d. April 16, 1865.

As I said, Mary Oliver checked the Dayton City Directory for the Decade of the !860's and found no trace of Andrew Jackson Anadown, maybe they lived in one of the surrounding counties, so I am appealing to your extensive list of subscribers for any information they may have on. The above information was found in some of my grandfather's notations, and may not be all that accurate (I have found a few inconsistencies in the dates he recorded).

I certainly would appreciate hearing from anyone with even a faint glimmer of information on AJA, whether it be ANADOWN or ANDERSON.

Respectively,

Hi! I am also trying to trace Larkin(s) from Ohio. The name has been spelled with and without the (s). I really don't know which is correct. As far as I know my family is from County Cork, Ireland. I know there are also Larkin's from England.

Here is everthing I have.

My g grandfather's name was Patrick James Larkin(s). The story is he was the youngest of 10 children all born in County Cork, Ireland except him. He was born somewhere in America (probably the Ohio area). I do not have the names of any of his brothers and sisters. His wife's name is "supposedly" Katherine Bridgett Quinn. Children Kate?, Walter? and my grandfather James Richard Larkins b.1884 (unknown) d.1941 Toledo, OH. - his wife was Beatrice Mary Dancer b.1883 in Napolian, OH

I am in search of a relative, presumed still living, and in my search time is of great importance, she is now 86 years old if still alive.

I am also working with others in finding their missing, presumed still living, relatives.

I would like to ask the subscribers to take a look at my website and it's links and pass the word on to others in hopes that someone will recognize the names or individuals that we are searching for. I can't seem to focus on my genealogy work until this mystery in my family is solved. I only wish to help others along the way. I am working with Todd Matthews, who just today had his story air on the LEEZA show, in helping those in search of missing relatives.

Anything that can be done to spread the word would be greatly appreciated. Maybe someone will take notice and a relative will be found.

The stories and pictures of these missing relatives can be seen at the following URL

FREE LOOKUP REQUEST With the fires at the Cincinnati courthouse, this may be a silly question...are there voter registration records available? I would be interested in the time period of 1840 to 1875. The DEVENING family came to Cincinnati near 1838 and I am trying to learn where they came from in France. DANIEL DEVENING was the father, his wife MARY M. KLEIN, and son, Philip came with him. It has been suggested that voter registration records can provide good information.

Thank you

Hi, Maggie --

I am trying to find a birth record for William NEVEGOLD (frequently spelled NEVERGOLD), 1861/62, probably in the city of Cincinnati or (long shot) in Pomeroy, Meigs Co., OH. William's father was Frederick NEVEGOLD, and there was already a daughter in the family.

Frederick was my gggrandfather, but apparently there were several cousins in the family, all about the same age, all named Frederick. I am trying to make sure I have the right parents attached to the right son/grandchildren.

Thanks very much,

I am searching for any information (but at least a date of death) for a man named William K. ROGERS (AKA Col. W. K. ROGERS, and the honorable W.K. ROGERS) who, I believe originated from Columbus, Ohio. The only info I know of him at this point is that he lived in Duluth, Minnesota during the late 1800's and was president of the State Bank of Duluth, AND the first president of the Duluth park commission, serving between 1889-1891. He seems to have abruptly resigned as park board president, perhaps because of illness. The 1892 Duluth city directory states that he returned to Columbus. I believe he died sometime around 1891-1895. He may have also done some surveying in Minnesota during the mid to late1800's for railroad or mining concerns.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Dear Maggie, I am attempting to find my g-g-g-g grandparents who according to Indiana census records, came from Ohio but I have no idea in which county. Their names are Samuel and Susannah(Bett)Jackson. Samuel was born on December 26, 1974 and Susannah on March 19th, 1795 according to a family bible. They were married December 5, 1812. Of their 11 children, Elizabeth (b:3/9/1815), Phillip (b:2/16/1817), Amos (b:2/11/1819), James (b:3/14/1821 d:7/13/1823), Samuel (b: 7/14/1822 d: 9/13/1823), and Rebecca (b:9/9/1824) appear to have also been born in Ohio. Lizajane was born 11/16/1826 and died 11/1827, place unknown. The next child was born in Indiana in 1829. So it would appear that the family moved to Indiana somewhere between the years 1824 and 1829. I appreciate any assitance you can give me. Sincerely Terri O. Edith Stewart died sometime in the 1970's when I was young. She was in her 70's when she died so she was born sometime around! the late 1800's, or the very early 1900's. Subject - Milton Arthur Mason, Obit

AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, Friday, May 16, 1924, page 19

Top headline: "Pioneer Resident Stricken By Death"

Bottom headline: "Milton Mason, Civil War Veteran, Wounded in Battle, Dies in Daughter's Home."

Milton Mason, lifelong Akron resident and veteran of the Civil War, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. J. Stelzer, 1086 N. Howard St., Thursday of exhaustion. He was 78 years of age.

He was born in Middlebury, now East Akron. His parents, early settlers of that place, came here from Connecticut and his father was the first postmaster at Middlebury. Mr. Mason's mother died when he was a child and his father became blind. The child was taken to the home of an uncle where he lived for several years until the uncle joined the rush for the California gold fields.

Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Oviat [sic] of Twinsburg, took him to their home where he was reared. When the Civil War was declared he enlisted in the 41st Ohio Infantry and served four years. At the Battle of Chickamauga he was wounded in the hand and was crippled for life.

At the close of the war he returned to Twinsburg where he married Miss [JANE] Jennie Springer, another orphan raised on the Oviat [sic] farm. The couple moved to Akron shortly after the wedding and lived here since that time. Mrs. Mason died about 30 years ago and Mr. Mason made his home with Mrs. Stelzer.

He devoted most of his life to engineering but retired from that business a few years after his wife's death. He was a member of Buckley Post, G. A. R. [GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC].

He leaves three children, Mrs. Stelzer, Mrs. Charles Isbell, 1082 N. Howard St. and Frank [sic] Mason of St. Marys. He also leaves nine grandchildren [ONE BEING HENRY WERTS MASON, MY GRANDFATHER] and one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. H. W. Werts of Canton.

Funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. Stelzer at 2 p. m. Saturday. They will be private. Burial will be made at the East Akron Cemetery. [HMMMM I THINK I LEFT OUT OF THE DEATH NOTICE "Rev H. B. Macrory officiating."]

He was born in Marion County in 1851. Am also looking for information on an accident on March 12, 1918 in Cincinnati. E.J.V. Booth was killed in an accident on that date. Where would be the best place to look? I live in Pittsburgh so it is hard to get information from Ohio from here. I just found out that many of my family (grandparents, great-grandparents) are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware. Can anyone give me directions. I may make a trip to see their graves. The Methodist Archives at Ohio Wesleyan just sent me a lot of information on this side of my family. With it I was able to find the marriage date of my gr-grandparents, Jacob and Barbara in Marion County in 1854. Going to check the Marion County page to see how to get a copy.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Researcher: Lisa Grimes
Email: nivek@gorge.net
Date posted: Thursday, May 21, 1998

Maggie,

I've done as much Census search on-line as I've been able to locate.

What I have found so far is that, RECK, LUDY, WARVEL, POE and ZIMMERMAN are all pre-1850 in Darke Co., OH, in the townships of Adams, Butler, Greenville, Monroe and Van Buren. The others came sometime later and before 1880; DEUBNER, GRIMES, and JOHNSTON arrived in the Darke County area, specifically to Arcanum and to the Greenville area. For the Civil War, no DEUBNER, GRIMES, or POE served from OH. The RECK and LUDY were in no small group, and well represented, none of those is noted to have died on the Ohio Volunteer Infantry Lists. But that doesn't mean a thing.

I noticed that your ZIMMERMAN came from ROSS Co., OH on their way west, in my listing I will give what I have to date, and we'll see if one of yours decided it was too nice in Darke Co. to leave.

Starting with my husband's grandfather, but here is the male line to there;

John Alan GRIMES, (Edward Eden GRIMES m. Alice Adline JOHNSTON) 3 siblings; Neil Edward, June Alice, and Paul Charles. All info known on this grouping.

James Harley GRIMES; b. 18 Oct 1883 d. 29 Jul 1955 6 siblings; Roll, Merle (122-1-1878), Gertrude, Decotta, Cora, and Ella _________Darke County, m. Effie Viola POE; b. 10 Jun 1884 d. 11 Mar 1937 ***date of marriage is believed to be about 1905

Effie's parents; Lewis POE m. Clarissa ________

grandparents; Lumuel (Lemuel) POE m. Abigail__________ (or even Samuel, as it is taken from scrawled writing)

Now we do not have any dates or locations, except the starting point going backward:

Frank E_____ GRIMES m. Ida Ellen ZIMMERMAN married circa 1875; so these are circa 1855 in Darke Co., OH
Ida's parents; James H. ZIMMERMAN m. Amanda __________

James GRIMES m. Elizabeth _____________
married circa 1850; so these are circa 1830, location unknown.

The surnames; JOHNSTON, LUDY WARVEL, RECK and DEUBNER are on John's mother's side but we'll leave them out for now except that I will state that LUDY (old co.) m. DEUBNER (new co.) then LUDY m. RECK (old co.), JOHNSTON (new) m. WARVEL (old) and THEN of course m. GRIMES. In the areas listed above.

IF you find something, whether or not our ZIMMERMAN have a match, I would dearly love to know about it. In the meantime, I'll keep researching as well, and thank you very much for the assistance whatever the results.

Reuben PERRY was b. 1801 in VT. He married Sally TOWN in Clark Co. OH. in 1824. They resettled to Auglaize Co. OH in the 1850s Reuben died in 1866 and was buried back in Clark Co. OH. I believe Reuben was the son of Davis PERRY and wife Philana SQUIRES?? of Bennington Co.,VT, but, have not yet proved it. I have heard that Davis' & Philana's family moved to Marion, Wayne Co., NY. Their family was:

FATHER : DAVIS PERRY MOTHER: PHILANA ?

CHILDREN:
IRA b. 23 Jan 1795 Arlington Twp, Bennington, Vermont
REUBEN b. 16 Feb 1801 Arlington Twp, Bennington, Vermont
DELIVERANCE b. 15 Aug 1804 Arlington Twp, Bennington, Vermont

LOUISA b. 22 Dec 1808 Arlington Twp, Bennington, Vermont
JOSHUA b. 17 Mar 1811 Arlington Twp, Bennington, Vermont

Reuben's children were:
Josiah b.1826, Christopher b.1831, Milton b.1832, Bailey b.1835,
Dennis b.1838, Fanny b.1842, Francis b.1844, Ruth b.1847; James TOWN was mentioned in several census'; he might have been from a previous marriage of Sally.

My line is through Dennis who was born in Clark Co. and resided in Auglaize Co. I don't know how many children moved to Auglaize Co. with Reuben; I am fairly sure FANNY did. I hope someone has some clue about Reuben or Davis that will help me finalize this lineage.

Thanks for your help.

Seeking info/links, parents, siblings, etc, for GGM Estrell Vastus WINTRODE (1870-1960 - yes she lived 'til 90). She was "of Champaign County Ohio" and married my GGF, John Allen WINTRODE (1869-1931), in Logan Co, Oh, in 1890. They had at least two off-spring (sons); my GF, Harold V (Vernon?) WINTRODE (1892-1936) and his brother, Loren WINTRODE (1895-1974).

Have found photos that show a "R. C. TUCKER" home in Spring Hills (Logan Co) and a 2nd home "in Indiana". Thus, R. C. TUCKER must be related! (Brother? Father? GF?).

Any connections/links/info most appreciated.

Many Thanks,

His father was Joseph McCleery. We have no birth or death records. We are looking for any information on Joseph McCleery, birth or death records. We know he was married to Sarah Freeman. We would like any information on her also. We are guessing they were born around 1800 and possibly settled somewhere around Hamburg or Lancaster, Ohio, because Eli McCleery and Harriet Dindore, his wife, lived in Hamburg and raised Nettie McCleery there. We have information on Harriet Dindore. She was born was born April 11, 1846, and they married June 13, 1867. Harriet's father was George Dindore and he was born in 1813. Harriet's mother's name was Sarah Jane Hoffheins. She was born in 1819.

Maggie, if you could find any information about these people, it would be greatly appreciated because we live in Michigan and don't have access to the county libraries in Ohio. Happy to join your club. It shall be interesing working with your group.

Samuel, apparently with family, was located in Montgomery County before 1850. He had a son, William Wesley COOVER by possibly his first wife, while living in Vandalia Township, Montgomery County, in that year. Also looking for information on his first wife and sons and daughters in addition to William Wesley COOVER.

Samuel H. COOVER, with his 2nd wife and family, in company with William Wesley COOVER, relocated to Republic, Greene County, Missour, before 1900. William Wesley married Mary Emma Gibson, either in Ohio or in Missouri. His childred were all born in Missouri.

I think he is buried in Greenlawn Cemetary... most of his cousins are..

a) did he have a wife/children?
b) do any of his vitals show which township in Wales he was born... Carno is a Parish...
c) If I had a list of people... who lived/died in the Columbus Area...
Is ther some way for me to "Order" various birth/death/marriage documents.. ie I pay for them, and have my grandmother stop by some office to pick them up?

Since most of the "first" generation Americans all seem to stay in the Columbus area, it shouldn't be to hard to find them.... (as opposed to looking for .. say ... Evan Evans in Wales....)

Another Branch of the Family moved to "Putnam, OH"... Is there anybody there I can contact for help?

I am currently trying to track EVANS from Wales, MORGAN from Wales, CAIN, LEHMAN, WELLS, DEVOL all in and about Ohio... >

Thank you for any information.....

below is a letter I've entered into the computer, that references people, places, and whatnots that I would like to try to track down, but really am not sure where to start, especially since some of the people may still be alive.. (these I would like to get in touch with...)

Maybe the info will help you in some other questing.....

Dear Mrs. Smith:

I am attempting to compile a record of the descendants of George Sr. and Elizabeth (Holmes) Wells who settled in Union Twp., Licking Co., at an early date, possibly 1801 or 1802. Your name and address was furnished by Marjorie Essex and she stated that in her opinion, you would be in a position to assist a great deal, as you have compiled same data of your own. Also Fannie Wells mentioned this to me when I called at her house a few weeks ago, in search of the family Bible of Geo. D. Wells, which as you know she has.

My great grandfather was Peter Wells, a brother of Geo. D, Joseph, William, etc., sons of Joseph and Mary (Doty) Wells, who are buried in the little cemetery west of Kirkersville. Their remains, in fact the entire cemetery was moved recently to make room for the new North lane of Rt. 40. Peter Wells died Dec. 17, 1892, and his was the first funeral I ever attended and although just under four years of age, remember distinctly how he looked when some one caught me under the arms and lifted me.

Up until about 25 years ago we lived in the neighborhood of Kirkersville and knew about all the Wells and everyone else around Kirk and Outville. For several years lived closest neighbors to Ernie and Margaret Amspaugh (*****

How do I research "The trouble"? Police records, newspapers?
How do I research if he actually legally changed his name?

David Dickman (my newest about 11th cousin!) has a webpage...which lists the decendants of Thomas (of which most all of us came from !!!). My line of Sanford's passed through Ohio on their way to Michigan...

Yours too, are probably from the same family group...visit the Sanfords at: www.rootsweb.com/~softbear/sanford.html#thomas1>>

Thanks Diane & Chuck for letting me know you are my new cousins as well. Here is my Sanford line so that anyone who thinks they may connect can email me and I will check my books. Also there is a search page at THE SANFORD RESEARCH PAGE and a newsgroup for the Sanford name. Subject - Elijah Mason of Hiram, Ohio

Dear Cousins,

First, let me state for the record who THIS Elijah Mason is not:

He is not my great-great-great-grandfather, Elijah Mason (1794-1867) who was born in Lebanon, CT and died in Canton, OH - he is buried in Akron OH with his son Milton Mason and his wife (Elijah's that is) Charlotte Gillett Mason (who was born in Wolcott, CT). My Elijah was an editor of the Portage Journal 1825-1829 - when Middlebury and Tallmadge Ohio were still in Portage County and one of the first postmasters and justice of the peace in Middlebury (which later became East Akron in Summit County.) Ironically he was also one of officers of the first Masonic Lodge in the area - all clues I'm faithfully following up.

Another person he is not is Captain Elijah MASON (1715-1798) - though probably all these Elijah's and Peleg(s) (one of the begats in Genesis) are all related I just can't resolve the links as yet. The Capt came to my attention from a thorough researcher and Roots/Mason poster named Edward H. Gaulin of Webster, NY. Edward has also identified Peleg Sanford MASON (1720-1761) as having died in Lebanon, CT - so for this reason (and his middle initial) I'm sure these men are linked to the material I am FINALLY going to post as promised earlier today :)

This is from "History of Portage County, Ohio" (1885) published in Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co (no author identified) - one of those wonderful county histories that popped up in the decades after the Civil War. Material taken from pp: 237-239; 252; 452; 469-471; 474.

"Hiram Township...received its first settlers in 1802, when Elijah Mason, Elisha Hutchinson and Mason Tilden came in and settled... Elijah Mason, who was from Lebanon, Conn, selected the west half of Lot23...In the fall they all returned to their homes in the East.... In 1803...Mason cleared twenty-two acres, built a cabin, and put out a crop of wheat [and then returned to CT - leaving to watch over the land Richard Redden, and Jacob and Samuel Wirt, all from Pennsylvania.

"Roswell Mason, son of Elijah, and some others, came out in 1807, but as late as 1809 the number of inhabitants was only twenty. [Al's note - ROSWELL? Proof positive that some Masons DID come from Mars, as postulated in an earlier posting!]

"Charles H. Paine, son of Gen. Paine of Painesville [OH - Lake County] ...married a daughter of Elijah Mason of Hiram Township...

"in the spring of 1803 Mason with his two sons, Roswell M. [FOR MARS???] and Peleg S. [FOR SANFORD???], lads of seventeen and nineteen...came out and and made improvements...Shortly after they came they discovered and named Silver Creek...They all then went back [to CT] and were preparing to come out permanently the next spring, but the two sons of Mason [BOOOO!] refusing to again go into the wilds of the [Western] Reserve [of CT - Ohio, NE Ohio is still know as the Western Reserve as land originally belonged to CT - it has a New England feel still] the father was compelled to change his plans and he purchased a farm in Vermont.

[COUSINS - stick with me - this has a dynamite ending :)]

Redden and the Wirts were left to care for the land in Ohio...

"In 1806 Roswell M. Mason had a change of heart in regard to the Western country, and came from Vermont to settle on Lot 23, which had been given him by his father. His father owned considerable land here and Roswell was made agent for it, but instead of settling down to the life of a farmer, hired others to improve the land, and studied law."

In 1817 Elijah Mason, fulfilling his intention of thirteen years before, brought his family and settled..."

About 1819 Deacon John Rudolph, originally from Shenandoah County, Virginia, came to Hiram, Ohio. One of his sons, Zeb Rudolph, married a daughter of Elijah Mason, and their daughter [LUCRETIA "CRETE" RUDOLPH] is the widow of the lamented President Garfield."

[THE GARFIELDS ARE BURIED IN LAKEVIEW CEMETERY - about three blocks from where I'm writing this in Cleveland Ohio

- I have more info on the Paines and will post more Mason info as I find it!

Oh THIS Elijah Mason was also in Rev War - but no details yet...

Subject - Mason/Garfield Update

Dear Cousins...

The name of the daughter of the Hiram, Ohio Elijah Mason who married Zeb Rudolph was Arabella Mason. There is a picture, c. 1850 of the parents of Lucretia ("Crete") Rudolph Garfield in The Garfield Orbit - by Margaret Leech and Harry J. Brown. In this photo Zeb bears an uncanny resemblance to the youthful Abe Lincoln. My Easterday cousin Heather insists I correct my earlier statement that the Garfields, President James A. and wife Lucretia are "buried" in Lakeview Cemetery - Heather is correct that they are in a tomb - the Garfield Memorial - which I can see by looking out my window...

Zeb was a leader in the Disciples of Christ Church and Arabella converted - my Elijah and his kin were Methodists....

"Yes, Dorothy," said Glenda the Good Witch, "you had it in your library all along!"

After months of research - and before either birth certificates from Lebanon, CT or will abstracts from Preston, NY could reach me (though it will be nice to have primary source documentation) - this afternoon I found what I have been looking for in the hallowed shelves of the Western Reserve Historical Society Library: as I unfolded an ancestral chart in a book on a man named THROOP I saw that I was looking at - among other goodies - the sixteen children of James Mason and Abigail Beaumont. Smack dab in the middle of the list was my great-great-great-grandfather, Elijah Mason, b. 1794. This completes the link between Milton Arthur Mason of Akron, Ohio (Elijah's son) and Major John Mason of the "Mary and John" (1630) in his paternal line and Anne Hutchinson on a Sanford maternal line.

Hello ROOTERS,

Am seeking parents, siblings, etc for GM Lillian Annabelle MONTGOMERY SLATER WINTRODE. She was born Buck Lodge, Sumner Co, Tenn, on 24 Oct 1900. Married (2nd husb) to Harold V WINTRODE on 20 Sep 1928 in Cleveland, Oh. GM Lillian died 17 Oct 1982 in Akron while living with my mother, Estrell Llewellyn WINTRODE SLUSHER (b Cleveland 21 Dec 1929 d Akron 17 Jul 1985 and married to father, Otis Webster SLUSHER JR).

Have no firm info on any of GM Lillian's MONTGOMERY family but know she had many sister's including a Daisy and a Frankie (moved to Texs?) Montgomery. Have found pictures from the 1930s/40's marked as being photos of the following at what looks like several diff MONTGOMERY family gatherings:

Lillian Annabelle MONTGOMERY WINTRODE
"Stella", my mom (as a very young teen)
Bertha MONTGOMERY DOLLAR
Branch MONTGOMERY LAW
Raymond LAW (husb of Branch?)
Ruth Ann LAW (dau of Raymond and Branch?)
Daisy MONTGOMERY LAWRENCE (blvd to be Lilian's sister)

Jackie MONTGOMERY BULLEY
Leonard BULLEY (Husb of Jackie)
Jane MONTGOMERY
Cliff MONTGOMERY
Carmine DELIA
Florence SLATER HARTMAN (Lillian's dau by 1st husb John SLATER)

Recall my mother mentioning MONTGOMERY and TUCKER (her GM was Estrelle Vastus TUCKER) family reunions "when she was a child" in Cincinatti, Columbus and Dayton areas so these pictures could have been taken just about anywhere in the late 1930's and 40's.

Know zero as to how the above "connect" except as mentioned.

Does anyone recognize or have any info on these "MONTGOMERY" related folks?

Many Many Thanks,
Otis (a Buckeye in Florida)

I'm researching the MacEachen family who moved to Columbus Ohio and possibly relocating some where in Perry County in the late 1860s or 1870s. I am lead to believe the Forename to be Neil, his wife was Either Elizabeth or Isabell(a). There were to have had approx... 6 children. One Roderick MacEachern no information on others. The family was from Nova Scotia possibly via Boston MA. The name MacEachen is not a common name in the Ohio area during the period I mentioned.

As I cannot find a Gensite for Perry County I though I would post the question here.

Hello list,
Looking for information about my gt. grandparents Samuel Dixon & Learh Riggin. They lived in Xenia, Greene Co. Ohio. in the 1830's. They were from Maryland. A brother of Samuel Dixon's was Nathaniel, he lived and died in Xenia, and is buried there. Any info available on these Dixon & Riggin families?

Thanks so much,

My ancestors came from Germany prior to 1800 to MD, then to a German settlement in PA, then west to Ohio. Here they settled, then the next generation scattered. The names involved are BISSETT, DAGUE, FIFE, HARPEL, HARSHMAN, HORN, KEENEY, MONINGER, MOORE, RIGGLE, SHIPE, SHUSTER, and YOST. Many of these families intermarried. I have not been able to connect with any of these lines in Ohio. Any help would be appreciated. Ruth

I have LONG, but I don't have their Pa. information. However, here is a copy of a message sent to me by a lady you might be able to contact on the internet.

Published on a BBS conference :

I need some information on Christian Lang, born in Germany, 1664, and died in Pennsylvania, 1719. The name Lang became Long around the period of the Civil War.

Thank you,
Mary Ann Brown

Our family has an AUSBUND (a prayer book) handed down from Amish ancestors. A note written in English by my Grandmother, probably around 1940 or 1950, and inserted in its pages says:

"This German book, which is a book of songs dedicated to the martyrs of the 17th and 18th centuries was partly written by two of my great uncles, one of whom was beheaded, which is related on page 212. The book was written [she probably meant published in 1801."

A friend translated the text on page 212 for me. It is a prayer of 16 stanzas titled "The Thirty-Seventh Song" and prefaced by the statement:

"Another song of John Longcoat and his man beheaded at Wiessenhorn and of the maid drowned."

It begins:

"Come, oh God, Father of the heavens, with the power of thy Spirit."

A friend doing research for me in Salt Lake City recently found the biography of Eitelhans Langenmantel in the Mennonite Encyclopedia Vol.3 Page 289. The following particulars of the biography correspond exactly to my Grandmother's information or to the text on Page 212 of the AUSBUND:

1. the number of stanzas in the song,
2. the beginning of the song,
3. the place of the beheading,
4. the beheading of a man servant and the drowning of a maid, so it appears rather likely that Eitelhans was the person she was referring to. Also, according to the Mennonite Encyclopedia, the "song" was not written by Eitelhans, but was dedicated to him.

My Grandmother was the 4th g Granddaughter of Isaac Long, who immigrated from Longertte/Longerette, Switzerland about 1715. He purchased land in Landis Valley, Lancaster County, PA. from William Penn's sons.

Since my Grandmother evidently had access to genealogical information supporting the statement she inserted between the pages of the AUSBUND, that genealogical work must already exist. I'm hoping that I can find it and connect Isaac Long to Eitalhans Langenmantel.

Hope this helps.
Judith

Hi: Maggie

I don't have immediate access to this microfilm ( Cape Breton , Nova Scotia, Canada)

I had the assistance of a kind soul, Ron Hunter, who retrieved the following information from his index database.

Census film 1880, T9-1057 from National Archives. Neil McEachen is on page 229C in Shawnee Twp, Perry Co, OH.

If I could impose, should there be anyone doing any census lookups in the near future and they run aross the information contained in this section it would to assist me in solving a little puzzle.

Many Thanks.

I am looking for a Mary Louise Hudson Powelson. Her father and my grandfather were brothers. Her mothers name was Sarah. Her father was William B. Hudson. He died in 1960 and is buried in Washington Courthouse, OH. When he was alive he lived on Parson's Ave and was a salesman. I know that Mary Louise married a man named Powelson and had 3 children but I don't know if they were female's or males. I know of this information from a book she signed at the funeral for my Aunt Emma Hudson Clark in 1954. If anyone knows of her or even of this surname, as I have not run across it anywhere else please let me know.

Thanks
