July, 1998

For some time now I've been trying to find the parents of Jane A. Springer (1844-1895) who married Milton Arthur Mason in Twinsburg, Ohio and settled in Akron. By the way, according to various sources I've found he used Arthur Mason, ignoring Milton for Civil War monument in Twinsburg, 1880 census and late 1890's Akron telephone directory listings. She is often listed as "Jennie"

The 1907 Twinsburg history (a green volume, known by my friends in Twinsburg as "The Nosey Book") lists, in the genealogical section, the Springers, giving Charles Springer, who like Arthur served in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as a Civil War hero. Charles is on the other side of the monument - with the fallen - as he died in Georgia and is buried in a Federal graveyard whhich my Barrington- side cousin Debi (guilt, guilt, sending this to her too :) has promised to locate. I suspect he is Jane's brother, or at least a cousin...besides Charles there is a reference to Mrs. Springer having died n 1853, at age 35.

But n Summit County source gives me information on Springers, in Twinsburg. Census of 1850, however, upon re-examination (and a gentle nudge from Sue Bricker - thanks!) showed several Springers in neighboring Geauga County.

Here is an entry I find interesting, despite no Charles, who would have been about 9 or 10 in 1850....

1850 Ohio Census, Geauga County, Bainbridge Township, 303

GARRETT SPRINGER 39 m, Farmer born NY
CHLOE SPRINGER 32, f, born NY
CHARLOTTE SPRINGER 9, f, born NY (hmmm maybe she became Charles? :)
JANE A. SPRINGER, 6, f, born NY
E. G. SPRINGER, 3, m, born OH
ELLEN M. SPRINGER, 1, f, born OH

OK - want to post this now and add Geauga cemetery notes that match SOME of these names tomorrow...late for work :)

One fly in ointment - Jennie A. Mason (middle initial in two Mason- related sources) listed herself in two censuses as being born in VT and parents in VT too..but note age right, and Chloe would have been 35 in 1853! AND Geauga histories I consulted claim same Charles as THEIR native son!

I need somone's help finding Henri NOEL place of burial. I last find Henri living in Cincinnati Hamilton Co between 1849 and 1856. After 1856 only references to Henri are his wife Louisa TURNER NOEL listed as a widow.

If anyone who has a cemetery book(s) for Hamilton Co. cemeteries would be helpful and look up Henri NOEL and let me know if you find or do not find him. I know he is not in Sycamore Twp. Book.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for posting the Tuttle Sword info - am awaiting anything from anyone since I really do believe it should be home and not in an antique shoppe - need to find someone to carry the family torch and keep good things close to the heart when it comes to family heirlooms.

Here is a resend of my Levi Brown request(s) - am getting closer every week yet not figuring where to turn my attention to next - the request(s) below have been sent out numerous times to many sites yet still no response that connects:

Levi Walter BROWN b 1841 Franklin Township Ohio d North Carolina 1906
buried Wauseon Union Cemetary Fulton Co., Ohio
married 3 times - I have wives names b/m/d as follows:
Nancy AMES b 1841 m ? d 7 Jan 1875 4 children
buried Johnson Cemetary, Elmira, OH
Elizabeth GIGAX b 1842 m ? d 1882 1 son Albert Marion Brown 1878-1954
buried Johnson Cemetary, Elmira, OH
Esther Converse STONE b 22 Oct 1847 m 16 Jan 1883 d 29 June 1934
3 children buried Wauseon Union Cemetary

If at all possible, could you help me locate the full dates for the first two wives including marriage, death, cause of death; locations of birth and marriage; parents and siblings; and a bit about Levi and the general store he ran in Burlington, Ohio before his move in 1880 to Wauseon, Ohio. I would like to know the name of the store, location, years of operation - that chapter has yet to be written on my end -finding myself up against deadends over and over. He was such a prominent, distinguished gentlemen in Fulton County yet so little is written on him - he was the US Consul to Scotland under President Harrison in 1879; served 3 terms as Probate Judge for Fulton County; and on and on - I have lots to share if anyone needs the info.

For those who came before Levi W. Brown as given above, my info is even a bit sketchier and is as follows:

BROWN Levi - immigrated from Ireland c 1720 and settled in New Hampshire Scotch family w/land grant by King James I (1603-25) in Ireland

BROWN Daniel - fought in Indian Wars, had 17 sons (son of above Levi BROWN)

BROWN Daniel fought in Amer. Rev. possibly Bunker Hill (son of above Daniel)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Am searching for information on Levi Walter Brown - arrived German Twnsp c 1835 with family members from Panton Vermont - family appears on 1850 census - very much interested in Vermont and New Hampshire connections:

Levi Walter Brown - any newspaper articles, commentaries, etc. would be very much welcome since they were a very well established and well-known family in the area - b 1841 Franklin Twnsp OH (m 3 times) d 1906 buried Wauseon Union

Benjamin Brown and Ruth Reynolds Brown (Levi's parents) b 1807 NH m 1826 Panton VT d 1872 buried Johnson Cmty (moved to OH 1837) Ruth: b 1802 Panton VT d 1873 buried Johnson Cemetary, OH (I have tombstone inscriptions and photos from Johnson Cemetary)

John Reynolds JR and Rachel Hinkley (Ruth Reynolds Brown's parents) b 1765 Panton VT m 1791 Panton VT d 1840-50 Fulton Co., OH Rachel: b 1776 Bridport VT d 1840-50 Fulton Co., OH Neither Rachel nor John are on the 1850 Census - any information would be helpful - I'm not even sure where to look to find their graves and death dates

Daniel Brown and Sallie Lnu b 1776 m 1802 d 1850 buried Johnson Cemetary, OH
moved to VT from NH 1826 and VT to German Township OH 1837
Sallie: b 1778 d 1848 buried Johnson Cemetary Elmira OH
(I have headstone photos and inscriptions for both Daniel & Sallie)

My Brown tree is very much rooted from Levi Walter to present year - only a few gray areas remain in the 1800's and many blanks from 1720-1800 - am always willing to share my info and GEDCOM.

Thank you Buckeyes!!

Here goes again - I have made several attempts now to send this request for help or information but first sent it to the wrong address, then in the wrong format and then, apparently to the wrong addess again - so I am hoping that I will be lucky this time.

I am looking for information on the family of my father's cousin, he very much wanted me to trce them for him as he lost touch some years ago. I should explain that I live in Sussex, england and my father was Welsh, from Cardiff. His cousins family consisted of Frank FREECE, his wife, Ethel FREECE nee EVANS and their daughter Eileen FREECE.

I don't have much info but accroding to my grandmother's diary the family emigrated from Wales in October 1920 and settled in Baltimore, Ohio - I have three photos that give Baltimore as place of residence - the diary also says that Frank FREECE died June 30th 1951 but I have not found anything for him in the Social Security Death Index. There is an antry for an Ethel FREECE which seems to fit:
SSN (Social Security No) 290-48-7334:
SNDX F620
NAME FREECE, ETHEL
BIRTH 03-06-1899;
IS (Issuing State OHIO
DEATH 01-00-1981;
R-ZIP(Zip code of last known Residence) 43105
P-ZIP blank
RC (State of primary residence) OH

My father told me that Frank FREECE was a sherrif and was involved in the capture of Public Eneny No 1 9I preseume there were several of these but I think he meant Derringer?) and he also said that he was one of the first people in the States to have plastic surgery but I don';t know how much truth there is to either of these stories or whether my father knew this from personal contact or got it from other family members.

Anyway, i would be really grateful for any help anyone over there can give. My husband and I have visisted the states several times in the past and have been to Columbus, Ohio three times but always on very short visits and have been unable to travel up to the Baltimore area - we bith really love the U.S.A. and have met some really lovely, friendly people there.

Thanks for your time

I contacted a very nice lady at the Dennison Genealogy Society and she says that she has them on Microfilm, and sent me to another person that in her free time does go to these place to get the info for me. That has been 2 months ago, and I sent her the check to cover the charges and it has cleared my bank and I still have no documents!!!!!!!!! The nice lady at the D. G. I have posted my family tree that I have so far through the Family Tree Maker for anyone to go see if they like.

She married Jacob Peter Wile, son of John WILE of Wayne Co., OH on 4/17/1860 in Seneca Co., OH. For this reason, I believe she was born in Seneca Co. also. I do know that Jacob's family is listed in the Wayne Co. History Book that is in the Shreve OH, library.

From Ohio, Jacob and Mary moved to Kansas. From here I am able to trace many of their descendants.

Any information on Mary Elizabeth Cook Wile would be appreciated.

Subject - Are we cousins?

Hi Al - It's late, but I thought I would check my mail once before I went to bed. And there was your memo on Garrett Springer and Jane Springer, etc.

We are leaving in the A.M. for a long vacation and will be in Ohio from July 8th til the 15th or 16th. I will be in Geauga County on July 12th for a Reed/Andrews/Springer reunion, and I plan to go to Chardon on the 13th, and be there again on the 14th to visit some cemeteries and museums etc.

Garrett Springer was my gggrandfather. His wife was Chloe Purdy and she was born in VT. Her parents were Charles Purdy and Anthy French. I have the Purdy and French lines worked quite a way back. When Garrett and Chloe Springer moved to Geauga county, Charles and Anthy Purdy moved with them and had land next to them.

In the 1850 census, Charlotte is definitely Charles Springer who died in the Civil War. I have some of his military records. Ellen Springer was my greatgrandmother. The family lived right across from the cemetery you mentioned. The info on Jane Springer is very interesting.

Garrett had a second wife, Louisa Keeny, and a second family. I have quite a bit of information on this group.

[There was more information, on when and where my new cousin will be in Ohio, but I wanted to share the main news with all of you who have supported my research in the past few years :) Happy Holiday! - Al

My Cooke ancestors thought they were descendants of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. I believe not. I think their first USA Ancestor is Henry Cook who married Judith Birdsall. I am sure just when the COOK became COOKE. Cook and Cooke seems to be so interchangeable among my ancestors.

Sandy,

I can identify with your thrill of being connected. Both sets of my mother's grandparents immigrated from England in the 1880s. On the paternal side of her family, she and her sister were it. On the maternal side there were so few and scattered so few of her cousins and widely scattered. My father died when I was a young child and tho he had scads of cousins, we didn't live near any of them and would visit an aunt and uncle about twice a year. Its even a bigger thrill when a cousin is so excited to meet YOU because you can say "I'm one of your XXXX cousins. Your grandmother XXXX and my grandfather XXXX were brother and sister". And you may very well be the ONLY cousin connection they've had on that side of the house. I recently had that experience with two different cousins I could tell them how and why the majority of the family - except their grandmother & her children - left the county and where the majority of the family lived.

Sorry folks that it has taken me this long to get to this point. I noticed Sandy that you have FINKs in your line. I have finally compiled what I have on my FINK family and setting it down below. I have to get back to PA, but I'm certain that my Jacob spent time in OH before he moved on to IN. All of his neighbors in IN had some kind of connection to OH.

All my information is from Death, Probate, Marriage & Census records.

Jacob FINK b 7 August 1819 in PA, d. 4 May 1856 in Pulaski Co., IN married (1st) Catherine ? who was born circa 1821 in NY, d. 23 December 1851 (I believe they married in OH about 1843).

Their known children were:
Mary Emily FINK b about 1844 b OH
Maria Louisa FINK b about 1846
Minerva Elnora FINK b about 1847
Sarah Alice FINK b about 1849
Jacob Alonzo FINK b about 1851 b IN

Jacob married 2nd Mary SKILLEN b. 1828 in OH the widow of Jacob STRALHEIM on 28 March 1852 in Pulaski County, IN

Their children were:
Florence C. FINK b. 24 Aug 1854 in Pulaski Co., IN m. 23 December 1869 in Cass County, IN Henry RHOADS (this name is spelled from this to ROADS) d. Logansport, Cass County, IN 2 Aug. 1934
Sarah FINK b. about 1855 in Pulaski Co., IN, died after 1913 prior to Aug 1934
Eli W. FINK b. 6 November 1856 in Pulaski Co., IN m. in Pulaski Co., IN d. 10 January 1929.

Florence C. FINK and Henry RHOADES (his CW record states that his surname is spelled RHODES, but he is buried as RHOADES and was married as RHOADS) are my gr-grandparents.

I'll be taking another trip to IN late this fall to do some more digging into the FINKs in Cass/Pulaski Counties. I did examine the guardianship and probate record for Jacob this spring. He consulted two doctors in Logansport, IN (a full day trip one way) regarding himself and the children just two days before he died. No death records so the cause eludes us.

Can we connect?

HAMPTON, Edward no known birth date. Married to Emma NEALON June 21 1888 in Columbus Ohio. Died in 1891, I've sent for a death certificate from Franklin Co. records but no record was found. Edwards father was John R. HAMPTON born January 1835 in England. He had a harness shop in Columbus on N. High St. Was married to Mary WILLIAMSON, I don't have a marriage date. They lived at 836 Neil Ave. in Columbus. From the 1900 census I have a record of a second wife for John named Louisa b. Feb. 1840 Virginia. They had two children, Wade and Eva.

NEALON, Emma b.Nov 1867 either Ireland or Ohio. Died 1942 Endicott, N.Y. One child with Edward, daughter Mary Jane HAMPTON. Emma's second husband Louis PARIS, no children. Emma's parents, John NEALON b. Ireland. I don't have any dates for John or his wife Brigit, also from Ireland. John worked as a contractor, laying brick roads in Columbus. John and Brigit had two other children, James and Walter.

WILLIAMSON, Mary. I don't have any dates for her. I do know her father was Edward S. WILLIAMSON born in Pomeroy, Ohio. He was a riverboat pilot for the White Collar line. He captained the steamer John S. Hubbard between Cincinnati and Pomeroy. Also piloted the gunboat Alice during the Civil War on the Ohio River. His father was also a riverboat pilot.

I realize this is not alot to go on and I appreciate any help you can give me to fill in some of the blanks. I requestd a marriage certificate for Edward and Emma but haven't received anything yet. Family stories have Emma running away from a girls private school to elope with Edward so that may be a dead end.

Can anyone tell me where I could look up the roster for Ohio's 46th Volunteer Infantry?
Also, I am looking for the following MURRAYs in Ohio:
Alexander, from Scotland, father
Alec, son
Robert Bruce, son
Ed, son
Douglas, son
Wallace, son
Rachel, daughter, married a Hotchkins
Maria, daughter, married Wallace Taggert

I have not had any luck locating them. Some apparently left Ohio after the War-my gr grandfather, Robert Bruce(sometimes only known as "Bruce" for one, came to Linn Co., IA, married and had his family started by 1868. I believe at least one brother came to Linn Co. as well. Wallace, I think, went to Calif., and one of the sisters may have lived in Missouri. If anyone has any information, PLEASE, let me know, and a great big THANK YOU!! in advance.

Hello Laura Owens and all,
Laura, Your posting mentions Ohio MONTGOMERY and LAWRENCE surnames.

My GM Lillian Annabelle MONTGOMERY (b Sumner Co, TN 1900) was married to 1/John SLATER 2/Harold V WINTRODE in Cleveland Area.

When she was only 10 y/o or so, she worked at her sisters and sister's husband's boarding house on Cleveland's East side. Sister was Daisy W MONTGOMERY (b ab 1866 in Sumner Co TN). Daisy married (dateplace unknown) a Albert LAWRENCE, prob very early 1900's. As said Albert and Daisy owned/ran a Cleveland bording house circa 1910 to ????.

Known children of Albert and Daisy:

1. _____ LAWRENCE (was called "Broth" as in Brother)

2. Vera LAWRENCE m Richard BROOKS

3. Thelma LAWRENCE

4. Gladys LAWRENCE

5. Ruth LAWRENCE

Lillian and Daisy MONTGOMERY had several other siblings but only these two are known to have left Tenn for Ohio early 1900's. Their parents were John Charles "Charlie" MONTGOMERY (b 1845) and Isabelle "Izzy" J SMART (b 1860). They were married in Sumner Co Tenn in Jan 1878. No info regarding actual dates of Charlie's and Izzy's deaths is known but family lore has it that Charlie died "in a flood" and Izzy shortly thereafter when Lillian was but 5 or 6 y/o. Explaining why she went to Ohio to work for her sister,

Hi, I am new to the list and am interested in learning if anyone on the list researches the Proctors from Athens Ohio. My grandfather was Walton Broadhurst Proctor born in 1898 in Athens but died here in Akron in 1966. His mother was Mary Broadhurst. I believe he had a brother Glen. I believe Walton is also a family name, as is traditional with the English to name their male children the family surnames.

I was always told by my father we were Welsh and English by ancestry. I have been told some of the Proctors that settled in Ohio were Welsh Guards men, brought by the English to fight the colonist. In return, given lands in Ohio. In my immediate family the tradition of the military was maintained.

Too, the Steinmetz family located in Cincinnati, Paducah, Kentucky and Lancaster County. My grandmother Proctor's maiden name was Florence Steinmetz and was born in Cincinnati. I do know that a William Steinmetz received a gold medal during the Civil War. My great grandfather was named William, but was to young for the Civil War.

I remember as a child being shown a red covered book, not very thick, describing the original settlers of Ohio and my name was listed as a descendent. I cannot however remember if it pertained to the Steinmetz's or Proctor line.

If anyone could be of help I would greatly appreciate it.

OK, here is my mother's side. we they have stayed in North East Ohio for over 300 years adding as they came.

The Hammontree's settled in 1712 in Stow, Ohio with Jonathon Hammontree. He moved here from Roanoke Virginia. The Cully's came sometime in the 1800's.My great grandfather was conceived in England but born here, with his mother being Irish but we do not know here maiden name. My grandmother is Helen Martha Cully (Hammontree) born in 1911 in Akron and is the youngest of 8 children.

Here is my interest, Mary Whitehead was Helen Cully's mother's name, she is my great grandmother. She married Thomas Cully, the one conceived in England. Mary is the mother of the eight children. I am interested in learning more of the Whitehead line. The story goes that the Whiteheads moved to America from England. After the man settled his wife and children he sailed back to England to bring over the company that existed in England. However, in England he was murdered. The property laws at the time was that women did not inherit the business or the money. I am interested in learning if Mary Whitehead was one of the children or descended from one of the children. My grandmother is old and is confusing families.

DIED: Hanna- Oct. 30, 1800 aged 86 years 9months and 2 days funeral services in the Presbyterian church Bloomville, Rev. M. DeWitt Long officiating. Mr. Hanna was one of that noble band of men which gave the sterling worth of their strong manhood to the developement of the new country. Born of parents whose individuality and sense of right could not be crushed by the claverhouses of the old world he has always been known as one who loved justice and espoused the cause of the oppressed. Dear Sirs:

~ My name is Jean Nalani Trobaugh. My husband is Gary Andrew Trobaugh of New Albany, Indiana. We are currently living in Bend, Oregon, however Gary's mother - Patricia Ann Neeley is living in New Albany. She has asked me to do some research into the Neeley family. I am also interested in the Trobaugh familty. We know very little as Gary's Father, Charles William Trobaugh died on February 1973 of a heart attack, in New Albany. Gary was only 8 years old at the time. I am looking for information on Charle's siblings and parents. Charles Trobaugh was married to Patricia Neeley and they had four children: Craig, Luann, Anthony and my husband, Gary Andrew Trobaugh.

I do have some limited information regarding the Neeley family. Patricia's Father was Collis Neeley and lived with Patricia for quite some time in New Albany, Indiana. He died in October of 1985 or 86. Collis was born in Harrison County, IN in December of 1902. Collis was married to an Alma Maskbee(?). We are unsure of the correct spelling of Maskbee, but we do know she was from Louisville Kentucky. Collis had step-brothers named Benjamen and Daniel, we think. One of them moved west to Los Angelos and had two daughters. These two daughters, interestingly enough were named "Star" and "Twilight" Neeley. We have no further information on these two women.

I guess a good place for us to start is with obtaining any records of Collis (birth, marriage death etc....) Iknow often times marriage records include both party's parents and birth records will for sure. Any assistance you can provide would greatly be appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Mr. & Mrs Gary Andrew Trobaugh

There are many more surnames that would be cousins that I would like to research as well if I can get some of my "mysteries" solved. I have probably overlooked some of my direct ancestors as well. To them I am sorry.

Many thanks to those that have helped and to those that will. I have not been on the "net" very long, lists an even shorter period of time. I really never imagined one could find as much information at the different sources that have been given on the "list". Thanks again.

And a very pleasant day to you. Just got up on the Net and trying to fill in some gaps in the family tree.

Main family name in Ohio is Castle, but I'm looking for a 2nd branch of Thompson, Peter. Peter was born in England or Canada.

Now this is where I need some help. Peter married Electa Jane Mann-Castle 7/2/1865, which was her 2nd marriage. She was born 5/12/1824 and died 3/23/1883. All in or around Ashtabula, which I think is Adams Co.. Peter and Electa divorced a few years later and she kept her 1st married name

Electa was previously married to Riley Castle, 12/31/1884. They had a daughter name Mary, born 1/8/1852.

So, I'm looking to expand info on Peter plus Mary and any other details that are available.

Most of my dads family still lives in the Ashtabula area to this day, with a large number of cousins and others.

I have a large amount of information to exchange on the Mann family if you need that for some research.

Hope you can help.

WOLF, August Henry: Hamilton Co., OH August (Gus), (1909-?) was briefly married to my grandmother, Dorothy Robinson, and they had one son Donald ( my father). Unfortunately, after their divorce, the Robinson family destroyed any records they had of his side of the family. I understand they might have lived in the Bethel area.

I have really appreciated this list in the last few weeks that I've subscribed to it. Many good ideas, and links are here! I just read something you wrote about soldiers and registration. The ancestor I want is Daniel HAINES/HAYNES. I have gotten several book mentions of him. He apparently moved from Penn. to Coventry Township, then Trumbull County, Ohio, in 1806. Family records said he was in the Revolutionary War, and that his land in Ohio was bounty land from the Fed. Govt. I want to prove that he was in the Rev. War., besides find out the name of his wife and children. Would the registration you mentioned cover soldiers who served from another state? Also I didn't find him on a pensioner list, and I haven't sent to the Archives in Wash. DC yet. I'm in Oregon, so I can't go look. I would welcome any suggestions.

Hi all,

I've been reading the list for a while now and I hope that you people might have some ideas since I've not had a chance to get to the Library yet. How would a family have traveled during a move from Middletown, PA to Mt. Union, OH about 1855? My ggg grandparents, David CONRAD and Sarah DOUP Conrad relocated their young family about that time.

I've also been trying to find the parents of David CONRAD b. 4 October 1823 Middletown, PA; Lancaster Co. ( I know that Middletown isn't in Lancaster but it is on the border with Daphin) d. 6 January 1906 Mt. Union, OH (Now Alliance) and his wife Sarah DOUP b. 1 June 1826 Lancaster, Co. PA d. 21 September 1909 m. 1845. Their fourth child Catherine was born 27 February 1853 in Lancaster Co. and their fifth, Mary, was born 6 September 1857 in Mt. Union, OH. I took a trip to Harrisburg and Middletown a few years ago but came up empty.

Thanks for all the help and advise,

I am interested in the Rowlands family that lived in Columbiana County in the 1930's and 40's. I believe they may have moved there from Derwent Ohio in the early '30s. I know that Darrell Lee Rowlands was born to o Robert Rowlands and Carrie Johnson in 1907 in Derwent, and Delmar Rowlands (no concrete reason to believe they are related, but most t likely are) was born there around 1915.

My ggrandmother was Mary E. MARTIN whose first marriage I just found out was to Charles JOHNSON, didn't last long and apparently no children. Second marriage to my ggrandfather Isaac WHITE.

I received Isaac's Civil War papers today these names are included.

Ellen TARBUTTON - first cousin of Mary MARTIN and she was at her first wedding.

Sarah V. STRATTON said she had known her all her life.

John G. POLING said he knew Isaac as a kid, played together and went to school together in Hampshire County WVA. I am just guessing but the G. could stand for Grandville.

Isaac's first wife was Maragert A. JACOBS and she is buried in Asburry Cemetery. Ella B. KNIGHT was Isaac and Margaret's daugher.

Should any of this sound familiar or even just a hint please e-mail me.

Thanks for your time.

This John Beatty became General John Beatty in the Civil War and Adin fought in his regiment. Looking for info on the BENNETT'S who were at the courthouse in Putnam Co. Ohio in 1892 to have the land of Charles BENNETT from Jay Co Indiana sold at public auction. Charles bought the Putnam Co land in 1837 when he was living in Wayne Co. Ohio. He died in 1856 in Jay Co. Indiana. This land was not sold until a public auction in 1892 according to the records at Putnam Co. Ohio courthouse. At that time the following people were present, Alexander BENNETT, Charles Henry BENNETT, Catherine M. RODGERS, Harriet R. SWIHART, and Sarah BURNS. I don't know where these people were living. I would guess they lived in Indiana or Ohio. Alexander may be the s/o Joseph and Catherine (JOHNSON) BENNETT of Mercer Co Ohio and a grandson of Charles BENNETT. The others listed may be the children of Alexander.

I know Charles and Phoebe had 5 children: Joseph and John who lived in Mercer Co. Ohio. Sarah (md Joseph Frank), Emeline (md Benjamin R. Johnson) & Washington who died in the war. The latter 3 lived in Wisconsin.

If anyone can shed some light on any of these families...I would appreciate it.

Dear Cousins,

I am descended from John Drake of Windsor, CT in the following way - this information from "The Descendants of John Drake of Windsor Connecticut" by Frank Gay, 1933 (The Tuttle Co, Rutland VT)

John Drake = Elizabeth [other sources say Rogers] - came from Eng.

Job Drake = Mary, daughter of Henry Wolcott (1646)

Job Drake II (born Windsor CT, 1652) = Elizabeth (Clark) Cook(e) I am descended from this lady TWICE - her daughter by her marriage to Moses Cook(e) - Elizabeth Cook is my ancestor and then Moses was killed in King Philip's War, setting up the bith of:

Sarah Drake = Roger Wolcott (Sarah born May 10, 1686) - so I'm double related to Henry Wolcott the "Mary and John" emigrant too - in fact, related to about a dozen "Mary and John" passengers, including GILLETT, FORD, PHELPS, HOLCOMB(E), and GRISWOLD.

Rev William Gillett(e) was rector of Chaffcombe parish, Somerset, England. This was the county many of my "Mary and John" ancestors came from - leaving 1630 - landing and founding Dorchester, Mass. About five years later many of them left to found Windsor, CT. The Rev. William died in Somerset in 1641, but two of his sons, Jonathan and Nathan, sailed on the "Mary and John." Nothing is known of Rev. William Gillett(e)'s wife. Information on his parents indicate they may have been French Hugenots (Protestants) who came from France and were married in London. There is some dispute over this evidence.

SECOND GENERATION

Nathan Gillett (died 5 Sept 1689, Simsbury, CT) Wife's name unknown, but she died 21 Feb 1670 at Simsbury, CT.

THIRD GENERATION

Nathan Gillett (born 17 Aug 1655, Windsor, CT/died 30 Jan 1757 in same place - YES - several sources show he lived to be 100+) m. at Windsor, 30 June 1692, Rebecca Owen, daughter of John Owen of Windsor (she was born 28 March 1666 and died around 1711)

FOURTH GENERATION

Isaac Gillett (born 2 August 1693, Windsor CT; died 2 January 1765) m. at Windsor, 29 October 1719, Elizabeth GRISWOLD (my connection to COOK, DRAKE and HOLCOMB) She was born 5 Feb 1695 and died after 1762.

FIFTH GENERATION

Zaccheus Gillett (born 18 December 1724, Windsor, CT; died in Wolcott, CT (which his son Rev Alexander Gillett helped found) in 7 January 1793. Was in Revolutionary War. (1) Ruth PHELPS 15 December 1743 (born 5 April 1724) - she died before December 1778.

SIXTH GENERATION

Nathan Gillett (born 29 Sept 1755, Simsbury, CT; died 6 July 1835, Tallmadge (then Portage County) Ohio. Was in Revolutionary War as teamster and Fife Major - see Simsbury DAR references. m. 16 April 1779 Lucy Harrison, daughter of Captain Aaron and Jerusha (Warner) Harrison, at Wolcott, CT. She was born 1 March 1762 at Wolcott, CT and died 5 Sept 1825 at Tallmadge, OH. Last October I found their graves in a cemetery in Tallmadge.

SEVENTH GENERATION

Nathan Gillett Jr. (born 7 March 1781 in Wolcott, CT; died, Middlebury, OH 1841.) Craftsman and musician. Lived in Torrington, CT until he migrated (later than rest of family) to Western Reserve (NE Ohio) in 1817. m. 26 May 1803, Abigal, daughter of Deacon Guy and Abigal (ALLYN) WOLCOTT [ making my second line leading back to emigrant Henry Wolcott and Elizabeth Saunders; the other being in in Drake line.] Abby died August 3, 1830. They are both buried in a small, seedy, locked graveyard in an East Akron neighborhood (source: a history of Tallmadge, Ohio that has a section on cemeteries - Tallmadge and Middlebury, later East Akron, overlapped.)

One note from Torrington history: their home in that town had at least one distinguished visitor, Dr. Lyman Beecher, fiery CT preacher and father of 13 children, including Harriet Beecher Stowe ("Uncle Tom's Cabin"); Henry Ward Beecher (preacher/abolitionist) and Catharine Esther Beecher (advocate of education for women.)

EIGHTH GENERATION

Charlotte Gillett (born 6 September 1807, Torrington, CT; died in Middlebury, Ohio c. 1847) m. Elijah Mason (see my Mason postings) and had six children, including Frances Mason, who married Henry W. Werts, carriage maker of Canton, OH and

I am interested in any information I can get on Guy BARROWS. I believe he was born about 1806 and he died August 10, 1847 in Guysville, Athens County Ohio. I was told he died of pneumonia after going into a mill pond to unhook a team of horses. He married Elvira Procena Stewart on November 3, 1839 in Athens Co. Ohio. She was the daughter of Levi STEWART and Mary Frances SAWYER. I have quite a bit of information on the STEWART and SAWYER families to share. Guy is a mystery to me. I have part of! his estate papers. I am not sure I was sent all of the papers. What interests me the most about Guy is who his parents were? Guy and Elvira had two sons: Levi Henry and George Benair. After Guy's death Elvira moved to Mo. along with her father Levi. It is not known if her mother was alive at that time or not. I would like to know also if Guy was the son of one of the BARROWS family in the area at the time, or if he is from a different group. He lived in the same area as the sons of Henry BARROWS, and seemed to be closely associated with them in business dealings. Guy died before I could get him on an 1850 or later census. The village of Guysville was named after him as he was the first postmaster there. Anything that would lead me in the right direction in this search would be appreciated. There is surely some court house record that would be beneficial to me. Does anyone know if Guy is a nickname for some other common name? Also, is Elvira his first wife? I see no other recorded marriages in Ohio for Guy.

Thanks

So ... Abraham WRIGHT married Sarah VANDEBERGH on 21 April 1825

Anyone have any ideas? She's too old to be the daughter of my 3great grandfather Peter VANDENBURGH, so could she be a sister? There are so many variants on this spelling that I can't help but think she was related I have no idea who immigrated with Peter as I'm unable to find any record of immigration.

Any ideas, especially from the WRIGHTs, would be more than welcomed!!

Mary Martha Hedges dropped from the records and John Wesley apparently married Anna(?). They had a daughter Mae and the three of them are burried in the Amanda Cemetery (Fairfield County). There is a K of P marker at his headstone and I have been unable to find anything on their records of his application for membership. I get no reply to queries to that organization. My husband remembered grandparents who lived in Chillicothe and had a bottling business. He recalled that they lived up on the hill in the Western Ave. area. His brother recalled a name Hussey (sp). Could that have been Anna's maiden name?

I am new to this list as I recently found an Ohio connection. I know nothing about Ms. Ella SWEAZEY except that she is reported to have been born in Ohio in April of 1859 (doesn't narrow it down much, does it).

She went on to marry James ROOF of South Bend Indiana. They had children in Kansas, Indiana and Michigan (including my great grandfather, Everett). The last known sighting of Ella (Sweazey) ROOF was the 1910 Census of Boyne City Michigan (Charlevoix County). Charlevoix County does not have a record of her death.

If you can connect Ms. Ella to your family tree, please give a holler. I would love to expand my searching into a brand new state.

With hopes that this shot in the dark might shed some light on this anscestor, I close with the utmost regards,

I am trying to find more information about Samuel Mixer, last known to reside in Port Clinton, OH in 1850. He had two sons, one named David who is my great-great grandfather. I also know that his wife died in 1854 and is buried in Port Clinton. I believe he was born in Massachusetts but have no information of his birth date or place. The confusing part is that there is another Samuel Mixer born within the same year that later settled in New Hampshire or New York.

Do you have any access to detailed Cemetary records or anything else that would reveal what his birthdate or place may be or where he may be buried. I have visited his wife's burial site but if he is buried there, he has no headstone.

I am so excited! I wrote to a Mr. Harold Awalt in Lancaster, Ohio, and found out something about my Mary Elizabeth. She and husband Simeon SPRINGER are both buried in Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, Buena Vista Road, Rockbridge, Ohio. Mary Elizibeth AWALT was born in 1863 in Buena Vista, Ohio. She died Feb.17, 1898 on the farm she shared with Simeon. Their son John is buried there, also. John W. SPRINGER was born Feb.23, 1888 and was a Private in the Army, I assume the first world war. He died Oct.31, 1974. I wonder if he left family in the Lancaster or Buena Vista area? Harold says there is a Donald , Michael and Robert Springer living in that vicinity. You should have seen the look on my face when I opened the envelope he sent me to find that not only did he answer my letter, he actually went to the cemetery and took pictures of the graves! He sent me one, though, that doesn't seem to fit but yet was amoung the other graves. Does anyone have a Matilda SPINGER, born 1862 died 1941, buried in the same cemetery I mentioned above?

John B. IRVING is my Grandfather. From family tales and 1900 census he was born in Ohio. The census says and also family his parents were born in Germany. The family says he changed his name (Irving) does not sound German.) Way back some one said the family was from Germany but not born in Germany and he did not change his name.
He graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music. I have written and e-mailed to several places in Boston but have received no answer. He was born in 1850 and the family said his family was Ctholic and when he married Mollie Sapronia Stewart a Protestant the family disowned him. They were married in 1887. John B died in 1901 with Lead Poising in or around Galena Kansas. He was a Printer and a Musician. He usually had a band where ever he went. I have found several Irving's in Miami valley in various counties on the internet and I have searched Amisty.Com several times. The family was supposed to have settled in Put In Bay as grape growers but I have written the Historical society and several people and they came up with on Irvin in 1875 from England. If he did change his name I may not be able to find him. If you can help I would appreciate it. Sorry about the long message.

Hi,
I's been on this list for quite some time, and am enjoying it greatly. Add to list of genealogy search injustices: if you search TRAVIS on the net, you get a gazillion Randy Travis hits, and that isn't even his real name, all the others live in Kentucky and Tenn. and came from the south -- maybe some of us Travis's should adopt them! We could also decide that Travis Co. Tex. was named after OUR line!

But, is anyone out there researching the TRAVIS or ZIMMERMAN lines in Tuscarawas Co.? Particularly around Ragersville. Of course they've spread out -- My g-grandfather (William Travis and his wife (Susan Zimmerman) and children, went to Clay Co. IN; my grandfather ended up in Ariz. Territory in the late 1800's, early 1900's. But, I am having trouble finding out much about John Shannon Travis who cleared and settled land near Ragersville. Also, having trouble finding out about his ancestors or what happend to his other children (there were 8). Also, I have no info about his wife, Hannah Kline, except that she had 8 children.

John Shannon Travis (b. 1796, PA, d. 1868, Tuscarawas Co.
Hannah Kline (b.1796, PA, d. 1883 Portage Co.

Their children: (this is all I have on them, except my G-g Grandfather)

George TRAVIS-- 1818 PA-1900 Auburn Twp. -- (m. Susan GONTER.)
John TRAVIS -- 1821 PA-1882 IN,-- (m. Mary Ann MOSSHOLDER)
Williamina TRAVIS -- b 1825 PA-1909 IN m.?
Levi TRAVIS -- 1828 PA-1887 Auburn Twp,-- (m.. Eliz. WALKER)
Lewis TRAVIS -- 1828 PA-1855 Ragersville OH m?
Louisa Jane TRAVIS-- 1835 Tuscarawas-d.? Portage Co.-- (m. Jacob NEFF)
William TRAVIS -- 1838 Ragersville-1912 IN (m. Susan ZIMMERMAN)
Franklin Travis 1844 (infant death)

Would like to know more about their children, spouses families, etc.

I grew up in Arizona and never met any Travis relatives and would like to "meet" some cousins, as well as find out about who these people were.

I have ancesters named BROWN, that lived in Brown Co. Ohio.... I always thought Maybe Vincent Brown (1786,,KY.-1853) had something to do with the name of Brown County,,,,, BUTTTTTTT I just read that the Name of Brown County came from a man named Jacob Brown a hero of the war of 1812......... Do you know if there was a connection between the two???

The following came from Beer's History of Brown County Ohio page 559, it says:" Vincent Brown was born in Ky. in 1786. He came to Pike Twp. in 1801 & was married soon after his arrival here to Martha Ann Allen, thus being the first md ceremony performed in the twp. He resided for a number of years on the old Brown homestead Prior to his death, Jan. 7, 1853.(now ,1883 in the possession of the heirs of Elliot Brown)... Martha Ann Allen was born in KY. 1793 and died at the old homestead Oct. 17, 1857."

Have never been able to find a record of this marriage in any of the following counties, Adams, Clermont, Hamilton, Highland, Warren or Clinton. They must of been married before 1811 as their First Child Rhoda MY Gr.Gr.Gr.Grandmother)was born in 1812. There were a lot of marriage records missing in Clermont County between 1808 and 1812.

Thank you for your time,,,,Mary Brown

I need help with two things; first any suggestions as to where my great great grandfather (Peter MILLER) was in 1870? He is in Putnam co in 1850, and 1860, then poof, he and his wife are gone. The next place I find him he is laying around in the Palmer twp cemetery. (He died in 1878) And his wife Anna, reappears in the 1880 census. Then she dies in 1883/88, and is buried next to Peter. Maybe it's time to just "let it go", and move on.

The second thing, can someone look on the 1880 census (index) for a couple of MILLERs, John, his age would be abt 30 yrs old, Stewart, age abt 27 yrs, and Frank age abt 22 yrs. I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions.

I do know his birth cert. that he was born illigitimatly at home by a Dr. But the name on the cert for his father has led to nothing. That name is HEINIE BRACH. Hi ,

I have a 4th great grandmother named Jane Maria WAKEFIELD who was born somewhere in Ohio about the year 1826, since she was 24 and 34 years old in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Richmond, Indiana, which stated her birthplace as Ohio. I have a copy of her marriage record from Allen Co., Indiana, which only states the couple's names and the date of marriage--6 May 1844. Her husband, John Patterson REID was born in Richmond, Indiana, 28 Apr 1822. I would like to find out who her parents are and where in Ohio she was from. Do any of you have any clues??

I really appreciate any assistance you can give to me.

Thank you,

Jonni

Date posted: Friday, July 31, 1998

Hi, Maggie. Thanks for the offer. I have Alfred JONES who was on the 1850 Federal Census in Bloom Twp., Morgan Co., OH. His family is listed as Alfred JONES, 42, born in VA; Sarah E., 20, Born in VA, and the following born in Ohio: Susan S., 17; Adolphus, 7; John W., 6; Emanuel, 4; and Rosetta, 1.

I know that he was married to Rosetta GIBSON in Loudoun Co., VA on Jan. 13, 1829, and that Rosetta was shown on the 1850 Mortality Index as having died from Childbirth at age 41 in Dec. I have information that their son Adolphus was born in Noble Co. in 1843, but I notice in some of your info that Noble Co. wasn't formed until 1851 (I believe), so wonder what county it would be.

I also have information that the couple and two sisters of Rosetta, Rosella and Rosanna, with their husbands John H. States and a Mr. Rusk, lived in Muskingum Co. in the early 1830's.

The main thing I would like from you is to check the 1851 state census and see if you find Alfred JONES in Morgan Co., and let me know who all are listed in his household. I suspect that there were two children between Susan, age 17, and Adolphus, age 7. My cousin had been told that Adolphus was the 5th child, and she thought there was a girl named Rosanne, and I believe there may have been a James, based on other information that I have.

Any information you can find for me would be very much appreciated, as I am in Colorado, and have trouble accessing much of the info.

Thank you,

Pat Grout
(pgrout@usa.net or pgrout@ibm.net)

On the 1860 census, he was in Miller Co., MO (where he lived for a short time). Listed with him are Sarah, age 49, and Adolphus (my great grandfather), age 17.
