My tree does not have the branch filled in for my grandmother since I have found it so difficult to research - here is what I do know and wonder if it might connect in someway to your family:
Maud(e) Louise Sullivan BROWN b 1869 death certificate gives place of birth as Ireland and marriage certificate has place of birth Allegheny, PA d/o James SULLIVAN and Jane TOOTH both born in Ireland and settled in PA - this information was taken from Maud's marriage certificate to my grandfather Charles Malvern BROWN m June 25, 1903 Cleveland, Cuyahogo Co., OH. Charles and Maud(e) were both employees of Cleveland State Hospital late 1800's to early 1900's; he has as the hospital pharmacist and she as a nurse (or so I've been told) siblings of Maud(e) taken from obit: Jenny (m Charles HOLT); Michael J.; Daniel F. and sister given as Mrs. Joseph IGO from NY

Hi Maggie. I hope you are feeling better soon. My mother has bone spurs. They are miserable. You are in my prayers.
I have 2 questions:
1. Does anyone know of a good Donner genealogy for those that perished/survived in Donner Pass? There are Donner's in my line. They seem to have moved in and out of these counties - Crawford and Seneca. I would like to determine if they are related to the ill-fated Donner's from Il.
2. Can anyone help me with an old adoption? I am trying to determine my husband's genealogy, but I am stuck at an adoption. It seems that Frances Glaser (b. 1906 in Cleveland) gave up her son, Robert Edward (b. 1921 in Toledo), for adoption through Catholic Charities in Toledo. Both people have died, but not before I got what information they would give me. Catholic Charities will not give me any information. The state has given me Robert Edward's birth certificate. (Robert Edward is my husband's father.) Here are the stories I have gotten:
Frances Glaser's parents are supposedly Joseph and Catherine Piringer Glaser (both foreign) of which I can find no trace - no death, no birth, no arrival. The parents are an assumption from the last name, birthdate Frances gave us, Frances' SS number application and their ethnic origin. The birth certificate just says baby girl, Cleveland, and lists a midwife, location, names, ages and birth places of the parents. Frances had said that she was Chech, which made everyone think, including the children she raised, that she was foreign born, which she was not. I can not find the Glaser's in any census in Ohio - 1900 and later.
Frances said that she never knew her father and thought that her stepfather was her father. Frances' mother died, according to her, and Robert Edward was the result of incest, she thought. That is why she gave Robert Edward up in Toledo right after he was born. The last name of her stepfather would have been Walenta according to Robert Edward's birth certificate (Frances Walenta as mother). But instead of listing her stepfather's name, she listed a Raymond Edward Gearhart as the father. His age and occupation were listed, along with Frances'. It seems that Frances told whoever made out the birth certificate that she was 17 and a factory worker. In reality, she was 15. She gave her address in Toledo but it belonged to Frank and Nellie Cleveland in 1920-1922 according to the phone directory for Toledo. They were in their 20's according to the census - Frances was not listed. The hospital where Robert Edward was born has nothing on him or his mother.
Frances went to Nursing school. Toledo's school has no record of her attendance. Local homes for unwed mothers also had no record of her. Frances later appeared in Flint, Michigan, married to Francis Coyne.
I checked most Walenta's I could find in the census soundex index. There were a couple of possibilities but there was no Frances listed.
Regarding the mystery person, Raymond Edward Gearhart, ...He was supposed to be a school teacher in Black Creek, MI. Someone searched for me and found him listed with a large family in that area in 1900. He does not appear with that family in 1910, however, when he would have been 10 years old. For the years he could have been a school teacher, in time to be listed on Robert Edward's birth certificate, the teacher directory/year books are missing (interestingly enough, the only ones missing are for those years). The school system was reorganized and some records burned, so there is nothing else I know of to verify he was there. In searching the SSDIndex, I found a Raymond Gearhard with the correct birth year who died in Iron Mountain, MI, which is not too far from Black Creek, WI. I requested his SS number application 1 month ago, but have not received it yet. Even if I determine he could be the father, I have no way to prove it. My husband suggested paying for a DNA test, but there is no one to test (that I know of)!
Any suggestions of where I can look next?
Melanie

I am looking for the divorce records of Samantha MILNER from her husband James A. CRISS sometime between 1860-1876.
Some Background:
Samantha MILNER was first married to Hugh or Alex RUSSELL and may have lived near Irondale, OH.
After the death of her RUSSELL husband, she married a James A. CRISS. The CRISS family lived on a farm in Washington Township in Columbiana County in 1860 census. Sometime between 1860-1876, she and CRISS were divorced.
Her daughter Mary Abigail CRISS married James Marvin BECKWITH on March 7, 1976 in Columbiana county and moved to a farm in Portgage County where many family members still reside. The very next day, March 8, 1876, Samantha MILNER (using the name Samantha RUSSELL) married Harvey MARSHALL in Stark County. Since all records of divorce are filed by county, I am at a loss for which county to look in. Any suggestions?

David LASH, I am searching for WEAVER's in Columbiana Co. Ohio. In particular, a John Weaver or William Weaver, late 1700's-early to mid 1800's. We have come upon a conflict as to whether my g-g-gfather (Moses Weaver) was from SE PA or from Columbiana County(John Weaver). Any assistance would be appreciated.
Here is the biography of William Weaver from Alvords History of Noble Co.
"This prominent and publis-spireited citizen of Elkhart township was boirn on his father's farm in Orange township, Noble Co, Indiana, September 4, 1855. He was reared on the home farm and secured an education in the district school. After laying aside his books to take up the duties of the farm he remained with his parents until reaching manhood's estate. Marrying soon afterward, he remained one year longer on the home place, when he settled on a farm in Elkhart township, which has since been the principal scene of his labors. His marriage took placae December 25, 1879 to Miss Magdalena Frick, daughter of John and Delilah (Boyd) Frick. Her father was a native of Switzerland; her mother was a native of Pennsylvania, and was aborn December 28, 1832. They were married September 22, 1854, and settled in Elkkhart township. Here the father died February 21, 1870. They were the parents of eleven children, namely; Susan, who became the wife of Cornelius Resler, died in Noble count April 29, 1885; Mardalena, who is the wife of the subject, was born May 10, 1857; William is a farmer residing in Elkhart township; Barbara is the wife of Wesley Weaver, of Orange township; Christian died when about twenty-four years of age; Joseph; Edward; Amanda, a prominent young girl, died at the age of seventeen; Katie died in childhood; and the others who passed away in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Weaver are the parents of two children, Cora and Ruth. Mr. Weaver has devoted his years to the vocation of farming, and the strict application of his energies and intelligent thought has brought to him ample return. He has a fine farm located in the eastern part of the township of Elkhart, consisting of two hundred acres of fine land. The well-tilled field, handsome residence and commodious barns, and outbuildings, bespeak the truly thrifty husbandman. Representative as he is among a class of citizens noted for those measures of public policy which bear directly on material interests, he enjoys a high reputation for sagacity and integrity, and his opinions and views are recognized as worthy the highest consideration.
In matters of religion, Mr. and Mrs. Weaver are earnest and active members of the GermanBaptist church, and by their example and precept are influential among the congregation with whom they worship. Mrs. Weaver is especially devoted in the numerous kindly acts which spring from a high appreciation of the duties of the church in promotion the cause of Christianity and that advancement of civilization which results therefrom, and well deserves the esteem in which she is held by her numberous friends throughout the township and county.
Christian Weaver, father of William Weaver, was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, January 1, 1826; Christian's wife was Susanna Towns, a native of Stark Steuben County, Ind. and settled in Orange township Noble count, Ind, where she passed away January 10, 1900. The father still living. They were the parents of five children, namesly: John, who died in childhood; William, the subject; Sylanus is a farmer residing in Orange township; Wesley is also a farmer of Orange township; and Cornelius, who died in childhood.
The life work of this worthy couple is well worthy the emulation of those who seek to so live that theri future years may be rewarded by a competence when the weight of years shall come, and their memory will long remain among those with whom their lot was fortunately cast."

Maybe where his dad originally grew up?
Is there an index for OH census from 1850 and 1860 for Mahoning, Trumbell and Columbiana counties? I have access to Natl Archives, but they have no indexes for my search area. Would like to find SCHAEFER, STEMMLER, or HOWE for those years. Also, were there any glass companies in Mahoning Co. in mid 1880s to late 1920s?

So glad to have this new Ohio genealogy list established! Been waiting for people to start using it, so guess I'd better jump in.
Been trying to get my William T. ATHA b. 1845, Logan Co. attached to his rightful family! About that point in time there were many William Atha's (Athey's) in various counties in Ohio. According to his Civil War Pension file, his parents were William and Fannie Atha/ATHEY. If this is so, then who does this William belong to?? I have run into several brick walls.
By the way, William T. Atha md. Anjinette Morse b. 1844 on Feb 21, 1863, Champaign Co., OH. and they had 5 children.
If you have any help or suggestions, PLEASE let me know. I'm getting pretty discouraged!

Loren and Maggie,
Just wanted to let you know there are a few of us out here. I live in Central America now but lived in Ohio for 40 years. I have most of my genealogical connections around central and southeast Ohio, particularly Franklin, Perry, Muskingum, Morgan, and Washington counties. I think I also might have collateral connections in Shelby County. If anyone on the list is close to information from any of these areas, let's hear from you.
I'm looking for the parents of John BROWN who married Mary Ann JAMES at Salem Baptist Church in Brookfield (no longer in existence) in Meigs township of Muskingum County in 1834. I have their marriage record from Muskingum County which lists John as being from Morgan County. There were several Brown families in Morgan County during this time period. If anyone has any information which can help to sort them out Please let me know.
I hope we can develop this list into a really good source for information. Other lists to which I subscribe have achieved this by posting not only querys, but also all verified data possesed by the subscribers. The more we put out there, the more likely it is that someone else will connect their data with ours and we all will be better informed.
I'm going to follow this post with others listing the data I've gathered. Hope to hear from more of you as time passes.
Regards, Don Drury drury@btl.net

Maggie,
I'm sending you my request again, and I appreciate you asking me to do so. My previous query was posted on April 29, 1998, with the surnames NISIUS, SULLIVAN, and THEES....
Nicholas NISIUS (b. Dec 1834; Germany) md. Anna Maria THEES (b. June 1836; Germany). He became a Naturalized Citizen 1860, she in 1866 (where??). Both lived in the "Lower Nile Township" Buena Vista, Scioto Co., Ohio. They are found in the 1870 thru 1920 Census years of Scioto Co. Nicholas was 85 and Anna 82, in 1920. I need their death certificates. I have had no luck thus far, in obtaining death dates. Their children were: Joseph (b. 17 Jun 1867), Peter (b. Jan 1868-9), Michael (b. 13 May 1871), and Anna Caroline (b. 15 Sept 1874). Would love to have their birth certificates. The son Peter, md Minna (who?), born March 1873. I found them in the 1900 Scioto Co. Census, but lost them after this. Need to find Peter's death date/ certificate. Anna Caroline md Maurice James SULLIVAN (b. 29 Aug 1875, Scioto Co.). They were married on 15 June 1899 (need marriage cert.). Anna Caroline died in 1948 and Maurice in 1960. Need their death certificates. I'm told they were buried in Sandy Springs Cemetery in Adams Co., Ohio; but I haven't found their grave sites.
Maggie, I have worked on this family for some years, without further results. I have written to the historical soc. of each county and to the state, with no success. I've seen what you can do, and it's quite remarkable! I'll keep my fingers crossed for luck...and I'll say some prayers for you and your mom. Thanks so much.

I'm interested in the MAIN and MARTIN families that immigrated to Troy Township, Delaware County Ohio from Washington County, Virginia in about 1814. Other families that made the trip are Williams, Wright (then Main brother wives), McGill (Williams wife).
My Welcome Martin married Mary Main in 1829. I've found them on the 1830, 1840, and then in Illinois in 1860, but cannot find them on 1850 census. On 1860 it states they had a son age 9, born in Ohio-either Charlie or Edson, the other one was 11 and also born in Ohio. Mary Ella (my line) was 5 and born in Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois. Any help with the 1850 census is VERY welcome!
Thanks in advance! Deanna

I AM REALLY IMPRESSED! Why are you so nice to do "free" look up requests?
I am looking for two things. Mainly the naturalization of Thomas THOMAS from wales. approximate immigration date is between 1863 and 1869 [1868 being the best guess], and his son Gomer Thomas born nov. 25, 1843 in wales not dec. 10. i find a gomer naturalized in 1875 on Oct. 11 in summit county but he is 28 not the 32 that my great grandfather would have been in 1875. but what i need is the naturalization of his father, but gomer seems to be easier to find than thomas so i had been working from that point thinking they may have been naturalized about the same time. i think the naturaliztions should have been between 1873 to 1876. and the birth of other children are still in medina til after 1875, so i am pretty sure it is medina. i have searched the summit co. and what little they have on medina county at the SLC Family History Library without success. i went to the county index here on the web and they show vital records, but not naturalization. any help you could suggest where i might find naturalization records for medina for 1870's would be greatly appreciated. Thomas' age is what i am really after as every census shows a different age for him even though the wife and children's ages are all correct. i need to get another age to pin down the right birth date. thomas's other children were - gomer, sarah, thomas, morgan, margaret, william, [lewis - not living in ohio] cecilia, lydia. his wife is ann lewis who was born in 1825 in mynyddyslywn, monmouth wales. Thomas was born in llantrisant, glamorgan, but after narrowing it down to 4 or 5 thomas thomas', i still need one more date to confirm the correct birth date.
thank you so much.

Hello List,
I am looking for information on Benjamin DAVIS, who married Margaret SANDERS Sep 1830 Columbiana County, OH. They had several children, one of which was Wesley. This is my line. Margaret Davis shows up on the 1850 Richland Co, IL census as head of household. As there was a child born 1848, I am guessing that Benjamin may have died on route to IL (OH or IN). I am guessing that Benjamin may have been born in 1810 or somewhere close to that. Also on the same census a few doors down, there appears a Johnathan Davis, born 1805 in OH and Elijah Davis, born 1814 in OH. These could possibly be brothers to Benjamin. Elijah's children were all born in Richland Co, IL the first one born 1841. Johnathan's children were all born in OH (all of this according to the 1850 and 1860 census of Richland Co, IL)
***Can anyone out there help me? I am beginning to wonder if I ever existed!!!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Fellow Researchers;
Would anyone happen to have the research material to tell if a Jesse Pearson (Pierson/Parson) is buried in Hocking County? He was found in Knox County during the 1850 federal census in Clinton Township. He was 42 years old, born in Pennsylvania and single. Family history indicates he died somewhere in Hocking County but we have no idea where his final resting place is (or when he died).
Jesse's brothers (over the years) lived in Morrow County, Knox County, Fairfield County, and Hocking County. It is possible that he may have ended up in one of these counties. Written family history indicates he's somewhere in Hocking County. Any and all help will be appreciated.

The only record I have of her is in the 1850 census where she was widowed and living with her two sons in Brown Township, Knox County. She does not show up on the 1860 census as living with either son. I am assuming she died in the 1850s. I have no knowledge of her husband, except I have identified a Susannah PICKET m. 1. Robert Martin1 Scott was born 1840 in New Rumley, Ohio, and died in Athens County, Ohio. He married Lucinda PARKER-KING September 06, 1861 in Athens County, Ohio Volume 4, Page 214.
Notes for Robert Martin Scott:
Robert's parents came from Pennsylvania to Ohio in covered wagons pulled by oxen teams. He lived with his family in New Rumley, but at the age of fourteen years, came to Athens County to work for a family named Warren. Canaanville was known at that time as Warrens Station. He worked in the mines and in timber.
Robert served in the Civil War, serving some time in Missouri. He saw three years service in the Army.
After marrying Lucinda, he moved his family to Missouri, traveling by wagon train. They stayed in Missouri for several years, but the climate didn't agree with them so they returned to Ohio to what is known as Scott Hollow, and raised their family there.

Estimated birth for Calvin between 1860-1870 and birth for Maggie between 1865-1875. I first found them on the WPA Vanderburgh Co., IN Birth Index with children listed from 1897-1908. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for them in Indiana. I have turned to Ohio because family oral history dictates that some of their children were known to have gone to Cincinnati, Ohio and that they may have had relatives there. I would be very grateful for any help.

I am researching PEARSON's from Edinburgh twp.
Ebenezer Pearson m. Nancy Keene and had 5 children. only the youngest, Ebenezer, is known to me.
Jonathan P. (aka John P.) Pearson m. Margaret YOUNG and had at least 2 children, Amanda who died young of a bone infection(?) (d. abt 1836 or 8), John Young Pearson 1822-1911, and Sarah E. who may be from Jno's 2nd wife, T. A./E. Davis. there is a sister (name unknown) of John's buried in Bowling Green, OH.
I would be very interested in finding where these people and their relatives are buried. unfortunately, John Y. states that no-one had a tombstone as of 1910.
I believe John Young Pearson to be buried with his wife in Yankton, S. Dakota City cemetery, or perhaps on a hill in Rosebud, S. Dakota. otherwise, he would be buried in Edinburgh.
Sarah is probably buried in Oregon.
Eben Jr. is buried either in Garnavillo or Earlville, Iowa.
T. Davis Pearson is supposed to be buried in Youngstown, OH.
Is there any transcripts of private or public cemeteries of Edinburgh? I would like to know of any Pearson's found in such a transcript, and if William Ross and his wife, Cynthia are buried in Edinburgh. William Ross died in 1857. I assume Cynthia predeceased him, as John Y. had to deal with his effects ('though there is no doubt as to the class of women at that time, so she could have lived past William.)
Thanks for any help, leads or ideas.
It's very frustrating. I feel that if I could get to Portage county, I would be able to untangle the Ross/Bunnell/Pearson puzzle. I can't though. it's as far away from me as Russia, right now.

All we know about John and Eve COLEMAN LAPE is that they moved to Knox County from Somerset County, Pa. Eve was listed on 1850 Knox County Census. We presume John was dead in 1850, but don't know where he is buried.
John and Eve's daughter, Ellen, her husband and three children moved to Iowa in 1856. Ellen's brothers John and Franklin and sister Rachel moved with them.
We haven't a clue as to what happened to the remaining children....Julia Ann, Sarah, Susan, Nancy, William, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Ebenezer. They may have moved to Findlay.
Any of these names on the tombstones you referred to? If so, I'll gladly reimburse you for copies of the photos and postage.
Thank you so much for answering my inquiry.

Susan Mildred m. Jonathan Reel (1845)- a wheelwright, Eliz & Achilles two youngest sons, John and William lived with the Reels when the mother died by 1850. I don't know about Achilles - perhaps they both died in a flu epidemic in the late 40's.

Isaac S. KIMBER was born about 1828 and married two times (both marriages recorded in Marion Co. OH). His first wife was Catherine FREE and he married her April 16, 1854. They might have been the parents of Samuel born 1855, John born 1858, and Elizabeth born 1857.
Olive COOKES married Isaac S. KIMBER March 15, 1863. Their children were Alice born 1863/4, Susan born 1865, Orren M. born 1869, Edna M. born 1869/70, William born 1872, Ida B. born 1875, Ada D. born 1875, and Isaac born 1877.
I'm glad to share and exchange information. Barbara DiMunno

Hello,
Thank you so much for taking the time so look at my request. I am trying to find information on my great-grandmother, Julia MONNING FISCHER, as she was known to my mother. However her name may have been Julianne or July Ann with the surname being Monnig. We know she was born in 1846 and married John Adam Fischer in 1866 in Ironton, Ohio (Lawrence County). After the marraige they moved to Covington, Kentucky. My mother had been told they were married by a Catholic priest in Ironton. We know that she was not an only child, but we don't know of her siblings names or dates of birth or death. Any information you can provide us with on the Monnigs of Ohio would be wonderful. I do have a picture of my great-grandmother that I can share with you or anyone else who may be interested in seeing it. Once again, thank you!

Somewhat new to all of this! Here's who I am researching:
Charles Wilson POE, married Grace FIELDING in 1906 in Columbus, OH? Charles was son of Ebenezer Wilson POE, born 11/11/1846 in Hancock County, OH and Caroline THOMAS (no records for her yet). Grace FIELDING parents were James FIELDING from Columbus? and Katherine (Kate) Maloney(no records for her). James FIELDING parents were William FIELDING and Anne Croisen?. The story is that William came over from Wales around 1820's, up the river from New Orleans and settled in Findlay, Columbus areas. Became a stone mason and built several churches (name is supposed to be on cornerstones). I have been unable to verify any of the above, except that Ebenezer POE was the State Auditor from 1888-1896. Ebenezer Wilson POE parents are George L. POE and Jane Wilson, married about 1845, probably Hancock Co. They had several more children as well. George L. POE parents are Jacob POE and Nancy McKinnis(McInnis?) married in Champaign County OH probably around 1820 or so. (Thanks to Judy Smith). What I would like to find out is where is Jacob from, parents, etc. Also, since I am unable to go to a library or other research facility (I'm in the Panama Canal Zone right now), can anyone help with some online research? I will be getting the FTM deluxe with its CD's, but at this moment, am lost.
I know this is long, any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I'm a new subscriber, here is my OH interest...
I am looking for any references or information on Evan JONES, my Great Grandfather, who immigrated to the USA in 1885. In particular, I am still trying to establish the date of his return journey to Wales from the USA. He was in the US between 1885 and 1896.
I have two items of firm evidence - one of which places him in STARK CO, Ohio....
1) In 1885, aged 35 he travelled to America, where he applied for citizenship, filing his initial naturalisation papers in Canton, STARK County, Ohio on 30 October 1886. The initial papers record that he arrived in the USA on 9th October 1885, but it does not record the port of arrival or the name of the vessel that he travelled on.
2) A search of the US National Archives Immigrant and Passenger Arrivals around the 9th Oct 1885 revealed that he travelled on the "SS Abyssinia", an ex-Cunard steamship. The entry in the passenger list was "Evan Jones, age 35, Miner, citizen of Wales, destination United States for a protracted stay, carrying 2 pieces of luggage as a steerage passenger"
I know nothing about his return journey to Wales or what he did when he was was in the United States. He was married in the UK in 1896. I have already had the Canton Library Genealogy Section do some lookups in their indexed sources.
So I am looking for....
... any references to Evan Jones (without a middle name/initial) in the Ohio between 1885 and 1896 (in particular Stark Co).
Grateful for any help

Dear Mrs. Stewart,
I am looking for any information on the parents or brothers of Thomas HAYSLIP born in Adams County Ohio, 14 Oct 1862. On his death certificate it says his fathers name is Samuel Hayslip born in Adams county, his mothers name is just listed as Mandy also born in Adams County. According to Thomas's Obituary he died 2-29-1944 and he was survived by his brother Scott of Peebles, Adams county Ohio. That is as far back as I have been able to get. I would greatly appreciate any info you can giveto me. Thank you for your time and effort it is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Zach hayslip@dircon.co.uk
