| _Rev. Dr. William WILSON _
|_Margaret WILSON _|
|_Isabel WOODHALL _________

Married to Rachael Perne in England. Came to New England in 1636-1637.
He settled in the town of Old Newbury where he took the Freeman's Oath.
Removed to Boston 1650.
Was Secretary of Commons, Boston, Mass. for 47 years. Boston was then the
Massachusetts Bay Colony.
On 3/22/1650 he was chosen at court to serve as the 5th secretary of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony. His home was in Boston Mass. He was elected anually
to this position until the year 1686.
He was named after Sir Edward Rawson who lived in the reign of the
Henry's. Other spellings for the name = Rauson, Rouson, Royson.
The earliest traceable Rawson's was Sir Edward Rawson in the reign of the
Henry's - 1300's?
Following are the children that reached maturity:
1. Stayed in England
2. Edward
3. Rachel
4. David
5. Mary
6. Susan
7. Willam**
8. Hannah
9. Rebecca
10. Elizabeth
11. John
12. Grindal
Early records indicate that the Rawson family was of noble lineage and of
importance in the history of England.
After he settled in Old Newbury, he was one of the grantees and
proprietors, notary public, registrar, and second town clerk from 1638-1647.
He was also selectman and commissioner to hear and determine small causes. And
he was deputy to the general court from Newbury 1638 to almost 1650. He
received a special land grant of 1500 acres near Narragansett county for
services in the general court. On 22nd of 3rd month of 1650 he was chosen to
serve as the fifth secretary of Massachusetts Bay Colony. He then made his
home in Boston. He was elected annually to this position until the year 1686.
Many of the entries are in Edward's handwriting but are signed by Nowell
who was the secretary and Edward was his assistant. The change from his
position was made by Sir Edward Andross,1686 who was appointed govenor of
Massachusetts by King James the I, son of Charles the II of England. He
appointed a man named Randolph to replace Edward Rawson.
On blemish on his record was the persecution of Quakers. There is even a
mention of "Rawson the clerk" in one of Whittier's poems. Apparantly he had to
sign these as because of his position.
Was also the Recorder of the County of Suffolk.
His residence was in Boston on "Rawson Lane". A better justice has been
done in Newburg, where the roll of two centuries, and a quarter have not erased
from the grasses where he walked the name "Rawson Meadows". At one time he
owned around 6,000 acres in the colony of Massachusetts.
Member of the first church of Boston.
He was one of the 28 that disaffected the first chuch and formed the 3rd
Old South Church in May 1669. Thomas Thatcher was their first pastor installed
in February 16,1670.

Aug. 22, 1654, he issued the Thanksgiving Proclaimation. This was a
proclaimation made by King Charles the II, the lawful king of Great Britain,
France, and Ireland.
In the Boston Library is a copy of "Breeches" Bible, brought over by
Edward Rawson and containing his family records, and a large portrait of both
Edward and his daughter, Rebecca, done in oils. Rebecca's portrait was found
behind a chimney in Mendon, Mass.
