.Witness a little style among the Greeks. Note, however, that smiles are rare.
This was taken at the Middletown train station during a farewell sendoff in the summer of 1951.
The occasion was the return of Nick Demetrion’s maternal grandmother back to her home in Greece after a visit of several months.

Left to right: unknown, Suzie Demetrion, Penelope Demetrion, Olympia Callipolitis, (Penelope's aunt from New York), Helen Stoikos.  Unknown and Penelope Demetrion holding Nick Demetrion's hands. Olympia Callipolitis holding George Kavouras' hands.
N.D.note: Callipolitis is an interesting last name.  My mother's mother's paternal grandfather (my great grand grandfather brought his family from Gallipoli to Brusa).  He was a baker who specialized in making tiropitas (borek in Turkish, borekakia in Asia Minor Greek).  His name was Athanasi but he was known in the Greek neighborhoods as Burek Thanas from Callipoli.  Hence, his family became Callipolites.
Gallipoli is a Turkish version of the Greek name of that famous
World War I city.  In Greek the city's name is Cali-poli (good/beautiful city).  If Burek Thanas had an original Greek last name, it is now long forgotten.

In old Armco Park (Manchester Rd.) there was a favorite picnic grove known as Bunny Hollow. It was a little more private and the scene of many picnics of Greek church and social groups. These are some random shots taken by Helen Petroglou of picnics in the mid-1940's. Photo#2,  Photo#3Photo#4Photo#5Photo#6Photo#7. by Kathy Stephan Spyrou
