BELL, BUSCH, BUSH, MEREDITH, NEELY posted by Justin Masters on Saturday, May 31, 1997

Looking for info on David MEREDITH, son of Benjamin Meredith. David, born 5 Feb 1821, in Belmont Co. Married Sarah BUSH/BUSCH 29 Oct 1942 in Guernsey Co. Trying to find info on Sarah, incl. her parents. Info re: David Meredith in Iowa mentions his mother being Margaret BELL, but can only find a record of Margret NEELY being married to Benjamin on 9 May 1816 in Belmont Co. Benjamin died in about 1826. Unknown where mother went, with minor children. 1820 Census listed several people in the home which seems to suggest a prior marriage of Benjamin, but am unsure (aren't those early census records great!? :-) Any help would be appreciated. Am dying to have proof of a Margaret BELL marriage to Benjamin, as other people have mentions of a Benjamin MEREDITH/Margaret BELL relationship, but no proof, just what someone scribbled on a pedigree chart, w/possibly discrepencies found there.

Our family along with the Sarchet family were the founders of Guernsey County around 1806. Our families set up a salt boiling operation near Cambridge. Daniel Ferbrache son of Daniel and Judith (Sarchet) Ferbrache was burnt in an accident at the salt boiling location. Thomas Sarchet -Judiths brother, wrote "A walk through fire" a testimony of the boys faith in God and the acceptance of his death. We have found reference to this being published in a Methodist magazine around 1815. We cannot find the actual document- Case Western, and Ohio Weslyan have copies of several different Methodist Magazines but none contain it. I have contacted two Sarchets who are ministers on the Isle Gurnsey today but have recived no response. If you can guide me to other sources it would be greatly appreciated.

MAHAFFEY, MEHAFFEY, SNODGRASS posted by Bonnie Bunce on Saturday, May 31, 1997

Am looking for parents of James C. MEHAFFEY, who was born Feb., 1840, "near Cambridge, Ohio" according to his Civil War pension file. He was living near Little York, Warren Co., IL at the time he enlisted in the Union Army in 1862. From stories passed down in our family, he had brothers Sam and John, and sisters, Sadie, Beckie, Margaret and one other sister whose name we don't have. I believe sister Sadie was the "Sarah MAHAFFEY" who married Jackson Snodgrass in Warren Co. IL in 1849, since James C. Mehaffey, age 21, and John MEHAFFEY age 12, were residing in the household of Jackson SNODGRASS in the Warren Co. IL census. I think my g.grandfather James MEHAFFEY was a grandson of Samuel MEHAFFEY, who settled in Adams Township, Guernsey Co. OH in the 1820s, but need proof.

We believe that he worked on the farm of the minister who married them, a Plillip Jarvis. We have been able to trace his life since he married, but are unable to find out who his parents were. The only possible clue is that he named one of his children George Mason Davis, and we think that Mason may have been a family name of one someone on the maternal side.
John Davis had the following children:
Samuel Davis - b. 17 Mar 1851 Antioch, Perry Twp, Monroe Co. Ohio.
Julia Ann Davis - b. 17 Dec 1854, Monroe Co. Ohio
Mary Emma Davis - b. 6 April 1859, Seneca twp, Noble Co. Ohio

HAVERSTICK, HOVERSTACK, LEITH, SHARLOCK, SHERLOCK posted by Richard Pangburn on Saturday, May 31, 1997

In Wolfe's stories of Guernsey County, he recounts the traditions in the SHERLOCK or SHARLOCK family, that their ancestor came to study for the cloth, to fight for the British, then changed sides and fought for the Americans. I believe that this tradition, like most fam.traditions, was true at bottom, but the details were misconstrued over the years. I strongly believe that the JAMES SHERLOCK who was the pioneer founder of this family was the JAMES SHERLOCK of the first volume of my Indian Blood series. I have not yet encountered anyone who descends from this colorful family. Isn't there anyone out there who knows this story? I am also researching the LEITH family of the adopted Delaware, John LEITH. And the HOVERSTACK, HAVERSTICK, etc. connection.

SHERRY posted by Dave Sherry on Saturday, May 31, 1997

SHERRY Question on Irish Immigration Patterns in Eastern Ohio I was hoping someone might share their knowledge on Irish immigrants/immigration patterns in eastern Ohio in the period after the famine (1848 to early 1850s). My ancestor Arthur SHERRY arrived in Bellaire in 1854, according to land records, and I haven't had any luck tracing backwards from there. (I've focused on 1850 Censuses and the Glazer Irish Immigration books thus far.) Any thoughts would be appreciated! Please respond by email.
