Goldie Boorom Fox

This information was submitted by Linda Boorom for posting on the Wesleyan Cemetery web site.

Goldie Jane Boorom was born Dec. 18, 1876 in Pleasant Plain, Harlan Twp., Warren Co., OH daughter of Frederick Boorom and Mary Elizabeth Fitzwater. She had 5 siblings, of which she and her brothers Frank Boorom (b. Feb. 28, 1871d. aft 1928) and Edward/Edwin Boorom (b. Oct. 10, 1873 d. Feb. 13, 1917 bur. Wesleyan) were the only 3 to survive childhood.

Shortly after Goldie's mother died Jan. 3, 1882, the family moved to Loveland, Clermont Co., OH. It is probably there that she married Benjamin Fox about 1901.

Before 1910, she & Ben moved to Cincinnati OH, living all their life in the same house on Harrison Ave. The 1910 census states that they had had 1 child, but none were living.

Goldie Jane Boorom Fox died Mar. 24, 1943 of a brain tumor and was buried at Wesleyan Cemetery on Mar. 29, 1943, in Section K, Lot 22W, grave 8.

An article appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer Mar. 26, 1943:

"Grandma Fox is dead. Was Faithful Red Rooter"

Players and spectators at the baseball games at Crosley Field this season will miss their most ardent fan and faithful rooter now that Goldie Jane "Grandma" Fox is dead. For the last 16 years she had appeared there with her cowbell at every game. It was "Grandma Fox", as she was called affectionately by players and fans, who knew the team members by name and who sent every Red a Christmas card.

It was not until she was 50 years old (she was 66 years old when she died Wednesday at General Hospital) that baseball became her hobby, and that she learned the game and all its fine points as few women ever do. "Grandma Fox" didn't mind the weather when the Reds were playing and there she sat, year after year, in her favorite seat in Box 158. When the boys made a really spectacular play she sounded the cowbell vigorously to show her approval.

She had been seriously ill since January. With her death the team loses a fan and a friend such as few baseball teams ever had. She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Fox, a retired motorman. Dr. F.B. Allister, pastor of Ninth St Baptist Church, will officiate at services 2:30 o'clock Monday at the Busse and Borgmann Company's Parkway Funeral Home. Burial will be in Wesleyan Cemetary, Colerain Ave.
