SAMUEL POLLOCK
Pottery Manufacturer of Cincinnati
1811-1870

Samuel Pollock, a Potter of Scots-Irish descent, immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1850. His second wife, Isabella Farrell, their children Isabella, Samuel Jr., Mary and a daughter Agnes, from his first marriage, accompanied him.

Settling in Cincinnati the family lived at 30 Dayton Street. In 1859, Samuel Pollock established the Dayton Street Pottery, at Dayton and Whiteman Streets, a few blocks from his residence. Under the management of Samuel and with the assistance of family members, the Dayton Street Pottery produced articles for domestic use in the home, ale and porter bottles, tobacco pipe heads, garden vases, flower pots, stove linings and furnace bricks. The products were of yellow ware and the Rockingham glaze was used. This operation provided employment to many in Cincinnati.

An unknown hazard of the pottery industry was lead poisoning; the lead in glazes being absorbed through the skin. In 1870, Samuel Pollock succumbed to lead poisoning. The Cincinnati Daily Gazette reported on January 14th and 15th:

"POLLOCK - On the 13th inst., after a long and painful illness, Samuel Pollock, in the 59th year of age. Funeral from York Street, Methodist Episcopal Church, on Sunday, the 16th inst., at 2 o'clock P.M. Friends are respectfully invited to attend."

Samuel Pollock was buried at the Wesleyan Cemetery in the Pollock Plot, Section I Lot #91.

The Pollock family continued operating the Pottery until 1874 at which time they sold it to Patrick L. Coultry. In 1880, the family moved from Cincinnati to East Liverpool, Ohio and there used their skills in established potteries at that locale.
