James Shane


JAMES SHANE, son of Benjamin, born in Jefferson county in June 1806. He was a farmer as was his father and was a worthy citizen. In 1829 he was married to Catherine, daughter of Alexander Morrison, by whom he had ten children, of whom four are now living. He died December 26, 1863 but his wife survived until February 1883, dying at the age of seventy-two years. Alexander M. Shane, now a prominent citizen of the county, was born in Island Creek township, February 26, 1832. In youth he learned the trade of carpentry and followed that about five years, then taking up farming, at which he has since been engaged, holding rank among the energetic and successful farmers of the county. He has held the office of township clerk for five years. In politics he is a democrat. Since nineteen years of age he has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his wife also adheres. He was married January 3, 1856, to Jane C., daughter of William C. Carr, of this township. By this marriage he has seven children: Jennie, James A., William C., Hettie E., Ida L., Cora B. and Maggie D.
