According to his military record, my great-grandfather
John Horner was
a member of Co. A, 157th Jefferson Co. National Guard. He enlisted 2 May, 1864
at Steubenville and was mustered out 2 Sept., l864 at Camp Chase.
He then served in Co. E, 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry 23 Sept., 1864 Alliance
Ohio, and was mustered out 9 June, 1865 - probably at Washington D. C. He was
a private in both outfits. John marched to the sea with Sherman, and was reluctant
to talk about the war afterwards, but did tell his boys that the closest he
came to being wounded was when a bullet pierced his hatband. He went to the war with
blue eyes but came home to Steubenville with one brown one. At war's end he
started coughing up blood and mucous, and for the rest of his life had lung problems.
Thinking a change of climate would help him recover, the family moved to Iowa after the
war, and then to Kansas City, Kansas in the 1880s where he died from lung problems
29 March 1888. John was born in Washington Co., Pa. 1 Jan., 1837.
The photo is of John and Elizabeth (Martin) Horner and is the only
known picture to exist of him. John's brothers James and Evan served in Co.
H, 30th O.V. I.; youngest brother Clark served in Co. H, 179th O.V.I. Grafton
Horner who was killed at the Battle of South Mountain and is buried in
Antietam National Cemetery was also in the 30th Ohio and I believe he had a brother
named Samuel Grafton or Grafton Samuel; but have never proven it to my complete satisfaction.
