Swickard, Martin M., a leading citizen of Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, formerly township treasurer, is a large dealer in stock and owns a farm of 144 acres, which he devotes to general agriculture. He was born on this farm, February 3, 1847, and is a son of Matthias and Mary A. (Maple) Swickard.
Matthias Swickard was born in Pennsylvania and in boyhood accompanied his parents to Jefferson County, where they finally located in Knox Township, where the son spent the remainder of his life. He became an exellent farmer and judge of livestock and dealth largely in the same. For many years he resided on the farm which is now owned by his son, Martin M., and died here in 1884. His widow, who was born in Knox Township, still survives, she being his seond wife. She was born April 1, 1819, hene has celebrated her ninety-first birthday. She makes her home with her son, Mahlon C. Swickard, in Salem Township. The surviving children of Matthias Swickard are: Emeline, who is the widow of John Downey, of Mahaska ounty, Iowa; Ezra, who resides at ounil Bluff's, Iowa; Mary J., who is the widow of John Shepherd, of Ottumwa, Iowa; Matthias, who resides in Colorado; hristina, who lives in Wayne Township, and is the widow of John Leatherberry, formerly of New Somerset.\; Martin M. and Samuel L., who live in Knox Township; Jason R., who lives at New Somerset; and Emma N., who is the wife of Edward Moore, of Wayne Township.
Martin M. Swickard has always resided on his present farm and has been interested in his present pursuits ever sine reahing manhood. He understands these thoroughly ad carries on his affairs acording to up-to-date business principles--keeping the best stock, using modern methods and improved machinery and thereby realizing large profits from his well managed industries.
Mr. Swickard was married to Miss Margaret M. Stephenson, who was born at Osage, Jefferson County, ohio, a daughter of John Stephenson, a former well known resident of that place. To Mr. and Mrs. Swickard twelve hildren were born, six of who are living, namely: Julia B., who is the wife of John Albaugh, of Osage, Ohio; Anna M., who is the wife of . B. Smith, of Knox Township; George, who resides at Steubenville; Florence, who is a successful teacher in the public schools of Lorain, Ohio; and Ethel, who teahes in the publi schools of Pittsburgh. Mr. Swickard and family are members of the Christian Church at New Somerset, to whih his parents also belonged. In his political opinions he is a Democrat and on the ticket of the Democratic party he was twie elected treasurer of Knox Township. Mr. Swickard is a man of high standing in his community, a representative citizen in every way.
