WALNUT GROVE CEMETERY Contributed by Barbara Shrodes. Dating from 1795, Walnut Grove Cemetery is Martins Ferry’s oldest pioneer landmark. Within the brick enclosure, built by a man named Hobensask, are buried the members of nine families. The families are the Martins, Moores, Wests, Crawfords, Woods, Parkers, Millers, and two families of Zanes. Absalom Martin, original settler of Martins Ferry is buried there, as is Ebenezer Zane, founder of Wheeling, and his sister Betty Zane, heroine of Fort Henry. Outside the brick wall are the graves of early residents including veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The area is also the site of an Indian mound, which was taken down with great fanfare in 1893. An article in a New York newspaper tells of finding valuable Indian relics. “Spearheads, darts, arrow heads and hatchets, beautifully chipped and with neatly drilled holes, have also been found in proximity to human bones.” In 1866, Ebenezer Martin and his wife Minerva Zane Martin sold the cemetery to the city of Martins Ferry, reserving the enclosure. In April 1877, a tornado struck the area and destroyed the stand of old walnut trees that stood there. After Riverview Cemetery was opened in the 1880’s, Walnut Grove was much neglected. Eventually, citizens realized that a treasure was being left to go to ruin. From time to time restoration work has taken place, the latest being done by the Civil War Round Table. In 1926, the statue of Betty Zane was erected, paid for by the school children of Martins Ferry. Walnut Grove Cemetery - Burials inside the wall Contributed by Mary Staley.
