Pension Application of Tabitha Schaeffer, wife of John G. Schaeffer, Private, Co. K, 36th Indiana Vol.  (John G. Schaeffer is the son of Peter and Catherine Schaeffer, residents of Montgomery County, OH, Germantown, both from Pennsylvania.  John is mentioned in the pension records of Peter Schaeffer, War of 1812).

John G. Schaeffer died at home March 12, 1864.

…It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that John Schaeffer was enrolled on the 16th day of Sept., 1861, Indianapolis, IND, Co., K, 36 Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 24th day of Oct, 1861, at Richmond, Indiana.  On the muster roll of co. K of that regiment, for the months of Sept. and October 1862, he is reported John Schaeffer, “discharged Aug. 31 for cause camp diarrhea, contracted in the service.”

John Schaeffer was enlisted by Millon Pectin (?) in Indianapolis, IND.

John Schaeffer was born in Centre County in the state of Pennsylvania, is 49 years of age, five feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, gray hair, and was by occupation a tailor.  During the last two months said soldier was attacted (?) with diarrheas while on duty with his company at Shiloah, Tennessee, in May 1862, his disease assumed a chronic form prostrating him so as to render him entirely unfit for military service, all medical skill failing to afford any relief….caused by exposure to wet and cold on the field of Shiloh.

Be it remembered that on the 30th day of December 1839, a marriage license issued to John G. Schaeffer (Shafer) and Tabitha Miller…

I hereby certify that on the 2nd day of January, 1840, the following certificate of marriage of said parties was returned and filed…State of Indiana, Tippecanoe County,

I hereby certify that on the 2nd day of January, A.D. 1840, I joined John G. Shafor and Tabitha Miller in Marriage, according to the laws of the State of Indiana.  Joseph Ashby.

Children under 16 at the time of the death of John G. Schaeffer, March 12, 1864:

Thomas R. Schaeffer, Willaim A. Schaeffer b. March 29, 1852, Catherine M. Schaeffer born 11 march 1854  and Oliver Schaeffer born January 1 1856.  Thomas R. and Catherine reside at Indianapolis and William and Oliver reside at Knightstown, Henry Co., Indiana.
