Old Fashioned Days - 2004
The Children's Pavilion & More
The pavilion at Morton School was constructed this Spring with the help
of the Shelby FFA. (
More information!
) It was put to excellent use
during OFD this year. Children's games and crafts were located in or
near the pavilion.
Children's Crafts
The Cadette Girl Scouts of Troop #50, Shelby, Ohio provided the
guidance and help the visitng children needed to construct the many
craft projects that were available at the pavilion.
Scout leaders Casey Kerr and Kathy Lowe and some of
the Cadette Girl Scouts prepare the tables for their soon
arriving visitors.
On arrival, many asked " What kind of things can we make? "
Since this was an "Old Fashioned Event", we made: yarn dolls,
pocket parachutes, spool tractors, and braided rugs. There was
an optical illusion spinner, a ball and cup toy, and we made
a Nine Men Morris game that could be played and taken home.
Business in the tent was pretty brisk all day long, both days.
All parties enjoyed themselves, leaders, Cadettes, and most
important of all, the visiting children.
Thank you to the Cadette Girls Scouts of Troop #50 and
their dedicated leaders. We all appreciate your efforts!
Children's Games
During the regular Morton School class season (April
through early June and September through early November)
Fran Waines is Miss Brown, a Morton School Marm for
visitng area school classes. (
More information!
) Fran loves
the children so much that she was working on OFD games while
she was conducting the final Morton School classes this Spring!
Fran and her grandson Bryan explain one of the many games that
they constructed and made available to the visiting children. These
games were designed based on games that were played when our
grandparents and great grandparents were children. They include:
bean bag throw, "fishing", hoop and stick ring toss, stilts, croquet,
marbles, jacks, jackstraws, soap bubbles, buttonhole puzzle,
whirligigs, Jacob's ladder toy, cat's cradle and string designs.
The Maypole was also an attraction that many children had
never seen. It also provided entertainment for adults who had
seen and used it in the past. A "good old fashioned game"
is one that you love as much as your grandparents did.
Smiling faces like this one make the time that was spent
in preparation well worth it !!!
Thank you to Fran and Bryan Waines, and Kyle Wheeler for
all the work, thought, and love that went into the children's games.

FOOD TRAILER ! !
OFD 2003
Thank you to Pat, Margery, & Betty,(& Bill, Dick,& Mark, behind the scenes)
who spent lots of time in or near the Shelby FFA trailer during OFD 2004
- in addition to all the food preparation leading up to the weekend.
(The above picture was taken in 2003 and includes Joan who was absent this
year due to illness. We all missed her cheerful, smiling face and look forward
to her return next year.)
We added a few new food items this year and from all reports
the food was well received.
Thanks again to the Shelby FFA for the use of the food trailer.
Their instruction and encouragment made it seem so easy!
Thanks to all those associated with the Food Trailer this year !
RAFFLE
When we first began to discuss having a raffle at OFD, the first
person we thought of was Sally Maier. We had a good idea what
items
might be of interest but we needed someone who would really
take an interest in this portion of the program. Sally was our
first and best choice. She is the curator of the Shelby Museum
and the Shelby Log Cabin. She was the first to contact and
share info with Fred McCance who brought the Shelby Tractor.
She is also a "people" person, and one who could interest
eskimos in ice cubes.
When we asked her to consider organizing the Raffle event, she
readily agreed and immediately began making plans. She even
contributed items from her personal collection.
The drawing took place late Sunday afternoon and was
accomplished with the help of two volunteers. All winners
left with big smiles on their faces and we think they were
pleased with their prizes.
And the volunteers who had taken a liking to the
"Liberty Doll" prizes were each happy to receive
one of their own. Thank you for helping us !
Thank you Sally for always having time in your schedule
for another Morton School project !
Oops - Pictures that we missed!
In addition, if there are other pictures taken of items or those who
contributed to Old Fashioned Days that we may have missed, please feel
free to send them to us and we'll be glad to post them on this page. For those
whom we may have overlooked in our report, please forgive us the oversight.
Thanks to All!
F
rom all the comments that we've received, those in attendance
not only
appreciated the exhibitors, demonstrators, and all the
displayed equipment. but even more, they appreciated the friendliness,
knowledge and helpfulness of all those who were exhibiting.
Thank you all for making Old Fashioned Days a success!
Old Fashioned Days returns on June 11th & 12th, 2005.
We hope to see you again !
