Muskingum County, OH 1920 Census - Ancestry.com to Heritage Quest Image Conversion Table
Recently some of the subscription genealogy services have added the 1920 images to their offerings and some like Ancestry.com have included their own transcribed index. The following is the link to Ancestry.Com's 1920 Census Index Search:
Ancestry.com 1920 U.S. Federal Census Index SearchAncestry.com has made their index available to all with the exception that the personal data and the images are not able to be viewed unless you subscribe to Ancestry.com. There is a way around this. Imbedded in the "View Image" link in the results from the Ancestry.com search, is the information for finding the page the individual is found on.
The table below lists the township, localities and city wards covered in the 1920 Federal Census for Muskingum county. The images provided by both Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com are sequential but are not numbered the same. Heritage quest does number their images starting with 1 in each enumeration group. You can find this image number under the heading of "HQ Image." It also provides a sequential numbering of each image in that group so by using the Ancestry.com image number, first find the group and enumeration district that number exists in. Subtract the Ancestry.com image number that corresponds with the first page of that enumeration district. Use the remainder to add to the HQ Image number and that should give you the number of images to jump from the first page of that enumeration group.
Using the Chart
Here is an example using one of my relatives that I know lived in Muskingum County.
- Step 1 - Search for the name
I am looking for "Clay Mock." I entered his name and entered Ohio and Muskingum in the State and County fields. The results returned one person that matched that criteria. The link to "View Image" is as follows:

- State=Ohio (STABrv and county were supplied by you from the search)
- ED=125
- Series=T625
- Roll=1425
- Image=0757
- ED=125
- State=Ohio (STABrv and county were supplied by you from the search)
- Step 2 - Find the image number in the table
Using the Ancestry.Com image number 0757 we see from the table that it is in Zanesville, Ward 2, Enumeration district 125.
- Step 3 - Determine the sequential jump number (Also described here as the HQ Image number)
We see from the table that the first Ancestry.com image number for enumeration district 125 is 748.
Subtracting 748 from 757 gives us 9. The person should be found 9 pages from the first page of that enumeration district.
- Step 4 - Determine the actual image number
If the first image in that enumeration district is 1 then just add 1 to the number found in the previous step to find the converted image number. In this case the first image in ED 125 is 33. Adding 9 to 33 we get 42. This is the image number in that group. Since Heritage Quest has a separate group for Zanesville Ward 2 and they supply a "Jump" field, entering 42 in that field and hitting enter will jump to the correct page.
- Step 5 - Determine the Sheet and Page number
If you have access to Heritage Quest or another non-indexed image site, then this step is moot as you will already know the Sheet Number and Page Number on the image you found. If you are using microfilm then knowing these numbers can be more convenient than counting pages.
Using the table we find the first page for ED 125 is 55A. The Sheet number always starts at 1A for each enumeration district. Each page and sheet are counted with an "A" and "B" page so every odd numbered page will be an "A" and Every even numbered page will be a "B".
If we use the number from Step 3, 9 and divide it by two, we get 4 with a remainder of 1. Add 1 (each ED starts at 1) and this gives us 5. The first page is always "A" but since we have a remainder then it would be the "B" page.
This gives us the Sheet number of 5B.
The first page number for the enumeration district 125 is 55A. Adding 4 to this number and adding the "B" gives us 59B. This is the actual page number.
