To subscribe to the Muskingum Mail list, send a new (plain text) e-mail to the list's REQUEST address which is ohmuskin-request@rootsweb.com. (Clicking on this link should open up a mail window using your mail program with the correct information already filled in.) Note: When you send a message to the REQUEST address you are communicating via a machine through which SmartList, the Mailing List's software program, can process your request to join (subscribe to) a Mailing List in the format you have requested. The REQUEST address is used only to subscribe and unsubscribe from the list. Do not send queries or other messages to the request address - your mail will not go through to the list.

You must follow these instructions carefully to be subscribed to this mail list. First, you must be a subscriber to the list to be able to post messages to it -- it is closed to the general public to reduce the amount of spam and advertising on the net. Second, the listserver only understands commands so do not include any text in your message other than the word SUBSCRIBE.

Using Digest Mode

If you prefer to receive a digest version (one email per day with a digest of all captured list mails) of our very active list, send your command to ohmuskin-d-request@rootsweb.com. Note: You can only have one subscription. You cannot receive email in both List and Digest mode.

How To Unsubscribe

To unsubscribe from this list, follow the above rules for subscribing but you would type: UNSUBSCRIBE instead.

Posting A Query

Once you are subscribed you will receive a welcome message from me describing some of the rules associated with our list. Once you have received notice that you are a listmember, then you can post your surname lists, general queries, family history, and miscellaneous topics of Muskingum County culture and history. Do not include your query when you send your subscription email.

Make sure that the e-mail is being sent to the Mailing List's posting address. Regardless of which mode you are subscribed in, the Mailing Lists' address is OHMUSKIN@rootsweb.com. Note that while you might be subscribed to the Digest mode of the Muskingum County, Ohio Mailing List, its posting address is: ohmuskin@tootsweb.com

Search the OHMUSKIN List Archives

You can now search the OHMUSKIN List archives two ways. To view all the old messages - from 1996 to the present, click here: RootsWeb Mail List Search!. Enter the mail list name: ohmuskin and press the submit button. You can then type in a surname or topic and press submit. A copy of the mail will print on the screen! You can also go directly to the OHMUSKIN search page at http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=OHMUSKIN.

To browse messages from 1999 in a new webpage format, click here: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ohmuskin. There is no need to sign up for this service or belong to the OHMUSKIN list. The archives are avaiable for browsing or searching by the general public.

A Few Guidelines for Successful Mail Discussion

This list is not moderated, so your email will go to all the list subscribers. Please post surnames in all CAPS and make sure any query or question is clearly and concisely written. Also, we will not tolerate any abusive or degrading communication of any form, nor will we allow "bashing" of any list subscriber. Please do not "SPAM" this list - if your topic doesn't have anything to do with surname lists, general queries, family history, miscellaneous topics about Muskingum County culture and history, don't post here. If you subscribe for this purpose, your email address will be removed and blocked from any further subscription attempts.

To post a reply to another subscriber's message so that your message is seen by everyone on the list, click on either REPLY or REPLY TO ALL. The "REPLY TO" function differs from list to list depending upon the settings selected by the list's administrator and the e-mail settings list members have selected in their own e-mail programs. Pay close attention to what address appears in the SEND TO box after you have clicked on REPLY or REPLY TO ALL. Make sure the address to which you want to send your reply appears in the box.

If the topic of conversation changes along the way (and it often does), adjust the subject of your e-mail reply accordingly. If you are a digest mode subscriber, take the time to change the subject as applicable for the message to which you are replying. Never copy the entire digest back in your reply -- copy only the message or even better, only the portion of the message to which you are responding. The same goes for list mode subscribers -- copy only the pertinent portions of the message to which you are responding.

In addition to the above, here are a few more rules.

Items that are ALLOWED:

You may include queries concerning our neighboring counties of Guernsey, Coshocton, Licking, Perry, Morgan and Noble. Please do subscribe to these county mail lists if your search is centered there rather than in Muskingum county. Try to limit these neighboring county queries to families or subjects that would also relate to Muskingum county. Remember that some of these neighboring copunties were once part of Muskingum County.
You may advertise your genealogical books or records so long as they have something to do with Muskingum county or prior to 1804, Washington County our parent county. We ask that you do this only once and ask for members to contact you directly if they are interested. This is not a commercial endeavor so no price listings will be allowed. If you are charging for lookups in your sources, do not advertise it here. If you just want to let everyone know you are getting rid of a Muskingum Source they might be interested in, I have no problem with that as long as you are either providing a link to where they may find more information or you are just asking peope to contact you off-list. details about prices and using the list for profit is VERBOTEN!
You may post partial family trees - please keep them to 3-4 generations only and do not post raw GED data. (GED is a generic format created by LDS for sharing data between different manufacturers software programs)
You may include your webpage address as an inline link for others to view. If you are using a signature block for this purpose, keep it to only three lines.

Items that are NOT ALLOWED:

No advertisement for any commercial content. If you are selling genealogical material for profit, don't do it here. The only exceptions would be for materials available through a genealogy society which is non-profit. If you are charging for lookups or for doing research, don't do it here. There will be no warning before you are removed and blacklisted from the list. If you find a source for sale on EBay or elsewhere, that is significant to Muskingum county, you may post a link to it and a description but please do not inlcude the price. The link would be enough.

Posting GEDcom trees or other large file attachments. Any attachment will be filtered by Rootsweb's mail server and will not be posted.

Sending JPG or GIFS -- ask members if they are interested and have them email you directly. Again, graphics are sent as attachments and will be filtered out by the Rootsweb mail server.

DO NOT SEND HTML ENCODED EMAIL -- TURN OFF HTML IN YOUR PREFERENCES FOLDER. RootsWeb catches all html mail and sends it to the webmaster and not to the list. Email that is html encoded will not be forwarded to the list subscribers.

ROLL CALLS -- Do not send roll calls to the list. They cause as much harm as good. If you want your surnames to be posted, please see the appropriate section on submitting surnames.
Virus Warnings -- If you have a question about a Virus or you received a virus from someone on the list, please contact me and do not post a message to the list. Virus messages are very time consuming and have no business on a genealogical list even if you think you are doing the group a service by posting it. Rootsweb is not the source of any virus content so please do not perpetuate a discussion on that subject. Rootsweb filters all attachments and that is how viruses are spread. Chances are if you received a virus and it appears to be from Rootsweb, it has been sent from someone else subscribed to the OHMUSKIN list in LIST mode who happens to be infected. If you want to make sure you are not the source of any virus content, subscribe to your lists in DIGEST mode and get a good Anti-Virus software program. If you are subscribed in DIGEST mode, any message containing a virus from your machine will be sent to Rootsweb and the attachment will be filtered out and not be sent to the list. If you think a user is infected, either contact the list administrator or the person infected by private email and not on the list.

Do not try to act as list administrator. That is my job. If you see something that you think needs to be addressed, contact me at ohmuskin-admin@rootsweb.com. Chances are I have already sent the person a warning. I prefer to handle such matters off-list to keep the list's subject matter on genealogy. Trying to take care of a problem yourself will only result in further problems. I only admin a few lists so I am always monitoring what is going on and taking an active role in the lists health and prosperity. I appreciate any suggestions but they should always be done privately.
